Good Apps Made Great When Paired With Midi Controllers
It's crazy how getting a new piece of hardware seems to only create reasons to acquire more tools for your creative ideas.
Bought my first midi controller in September: Akai MPK225.I loved it. Until i convinced myself i needed more pads.
I love my new Akai MPD226. It is perfect. Love the editing software. Which is why I realized I should have bought the akai pro keyboard i with the VIP midi mapping software as the mpk225 does not--but the mini version does and i want to integrate my own mapping to the countless vst synths i have as well as compulsive collection of apps
2 controllers, one berhinger ucontrol, 1 xenyx mixer, an iconnect midi2+, iconnect audio2, a scarlet sapphire, more apps than i care to admit, and a whole bunch of vst software for my two DAWs later---(helluva a year that has been a a fun learning/research experience) --and i am seeking the best midi in virtual drumming apps/software AND wondering if i am overlooking any apps you thought were only okay that really came to life when coupled with a midi keyboard or drum pad. Or any app that thrives best with said hardware.
i have been working mostly with animoog and sunrizer for midi in. Hoping to find a good virtual pad based platform to program midi into and open to any other suggestions to give me an excuse to buy another app to work with my hardware.

Bump for "Apps and the Controllers That Love Them" idea.
Novation X-Station controller and any synthesizer app (particularly subtractive VAs) is a bit of a miracle. When you have a knob labeled "Resonance" you don't have to stop and think, you just adjust it and keep making noise.
Loopy and pretty much any controller. I use a combination of an FCB1010 for foot control and a korg nanokontrol 2 for other stuff like volume, muting... It's set up for 6 tracks of control then 1 slider set for 'current track' and 1 slider set for random other stuff like tap tempo, metronome volume... There are quite a lot of things you can do with Loopy that you can really only do via MIDI controller like combined actions.
I also have an LPD-8 dedicated to controlling AUFX:Space and AUFX:Dub. No need to switch to the app; turn the knob, hear the change.
Elastic Drums + DD... set up 4 drum racks in Live and map apps to the LP pro, with LCXL sequencing and FX control, or leave 1 or 2 racks empty on the LP pro, Sample the other 2, and copy Paste.
awesome tip. much appreciated!
iOS compatible , USB interface built in!

Not to mention room for a mini kp and an iPad stand
This.

I have an edirol pcr keyboard which has most that I need (including 37 keys, joystick for pitch bend like xtation, midi din and crossfader!) and also I bought recently a Vestax pad one for xy, pads and midi DIN output (hell yesss) but also looking for second hand launchkey as soon as novation make them compatible with blocs wave (they aren't right?) in the same way they are with launchpad...
Which are the kings on this realm (apps plus controllers).
Also I have roland fc100mk2 (midi modded) for looping duties and also I'm crafting my own bass midi pedal for use in junction with apps like midiband (must have if you play neck or wind instruments...)
Nice!
Is that your template for Model 15?
Woa. Good eye @SpookyZoo!
BCR2000 with AUM is so great...(the edition might be a bit complex, but once setuped, it's a tank)

I'm planning a Quneo with Elastic drum template soon also...(the editor is great)

I'd be interested it trying that out once you've finished, please.
Missed out on a Quneo for £80 on Ebay last night because I forgot to set an alarm for 7:55pm.
9pm Panic/Sick feeling
I have a korg taktile i got in a trade and hadn't really put it to use since i have an 88 weighted key for piano parts and the nanokey studio for convenience. Bunkered down and created a template for my most used gadgets and am loving it. Knobs, sliders and keys are not the best but very useable. Powers with the ipad, even the screen where tou choose the scenes. Any soft synth is instantly way better with well mapped controllers.
this is great. thanks again for the advice. i am perpetually getting my mind blown by the desktop soft synths on one controller and then my synth collection on my ipad into ableton on another. the possibilities are literally endless.
i have not heeded the sage advice of mastering one and starting small and limiting my options. "i'm on the bus".
I haven't tried it yet but Launchpad + Infinite Looper 2.1+ looks to be a winning combo.

Just posted this in another thread but might as well share it here as well. This is how my NanoKontrol 2 is set up for Loopy. It's a little odd in that tracks 2-7 control loopy tracks 1-6 but I mostly work with the 'current track' which I wanted in the first position.
A little easier to read full size.
The BCR2000 and effectrix are a nice pair, I put together a graphic in Illustrator:

The push encoders are programmed to be momentary buttons to turn the effect on, you can push on while you tweak the knobs, and there is a latching on button underneath. Doesn't use all the effects, not enough knobs.
Was thinking of trying to make a plexiglass cover, as an alternative to the masking tape, and be able to switch things out, but am not sure what to do with the buttons, since a thick panel would make the buttons less accessible, being down in a little hole, rather than on the surface.
Thesys and the Launchcontrol XL.
I got the Novation LaunchKey 25 for simple iOS MIDI controller duty-just to play chords for pads and keyboard or pad drum sequencing. It came with Q code for the LaunchPad app which it blends with perfectly. But the clip performance apps like Blocs and LaunchPad are interesting but not really my bag.
The app that really went from good to ridiculously cool wasn't discovered with the Novation but with an 88 weighted action keys digital piano I have that has a MIDI out. Whenever I played NeoSoul Keys on the touch screen or the 25 key Novation it sounded great but of course suffered from the small keyboards.
With a full 88 keys the Rhodes models and especially the Wurli on the NeoSoul app came to life and with headphones & even good not great monitors the realism was really quite extraordinary. Adjusting the mechanical noises and getting the dirt & bark just right, along with having the full bass range to play with, the app really amazed me and has inspired me to play more keys.
I mean I know all the standard chords & inversions, along with the extensions, but as far as left hand independen toce while playing melodies, forget it. So the practice the app has inspired is definitely needed.
Great app though...worth getting all the IAP models, even the Dyno.
That's awesome! So you printed from illustrator onto plain paper and used masking tape, glue, to paste down?
Not used a BCR2000 before. Are the first 4 parameters named controlled by the first rotary? How do you switch between them?
Cheers
Nice!
Looks perfect for use.
@SpookyZoo NICE !
And yeah I bought my Quneo quite cheap also, and it's also a really nice controller...
@aaronpc no problem, I'll share it. But as there's midi learn in ED it's quite easy to do.
Would have been had I remembered to bid!
Love the 'LoopyKontrol'.
In fact this has inspired me to see if I can replicate this on the NanoKontrol Studio via Bluetooth.
@crony Thanks. I'm mostly interested in what you map the controls to. I'm always so indecisive about such things, and end up taking forever.
Fantastic, thanks for sharing! Can you elaborate on why you have a current track vs 1-6? If you start at Track 1 and proceed to next as you build up loops, isn't that the same as controlling 1-6?
I see, same problem here.
A tip:
Print some blank templates, then write it down what you want to assign, with midi ch, then you'll see better if it's convenient or not, and you won't be stuck on step 1...
Also, don't map everything in a synth, then play. Personally, I launch the app, then I assign controllers I REALLY use on the midi controller, then I can go for adjustments from that point
Midi and ios is THE thing: no more app switching!
Among the many setups I experimented with (loopy, turnado, etc) here is one I did lately:
B-STEP pro 4 sequences to 4 synths, each mapped to Its own nanokontrol. Elsa, Strng, Shapesynth and Minisynth by effectrix.
@aaronpc OMG, it's a nightmare....lol....I'm ending my template with just the very simple operations...I couldn't apply the rotary to the effects as I wanted.
I have Effectrix doing that better, so I'll combine some functions of ED + some other effects...
Inspired by your post...
