Covers Club - December 2016

This is an experimental idea, following on from a suggestion by @JohnnyGoodyear. The idea is for those who might wish to do covers rather than original material, and want a place for reciprocal feedback. The rules are going to be similar to SOTMC:

What is the Covers Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their cover versions. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow and improve and correct their mistakes.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material.

  • I like this idea! I mostly mess around with covers as it is, so it fit me perfect.

    Bring it!

  • I might have done a cover in the past, but I cleverly changed the order of some (where some = all) of the words, to avoid being slayed when this christmas hit goes viral and everybody catches a cold buys it.

  • Great idea! Any concerns about copyright infringement on either Soundcloud or Youtube, which I imagine would be two popular platforms used to participate?

Soundcloud has never given me grief and I have a lot of covers on there. YouTube has hit me on a few but not all.

Ok, so not done in December, or this year even, but it's my only ever cover so I'll chuck it on anyway if that's permissible?
My take on Visage's 'Fade to Grey' from 3 years ago, all done on iOS.

    Free download for anyone interested.

    Cheers

I was listening to the original on Saturday.
    This is nicely done, LB.

If anyone has trouble with both, send me the MP3 and I'll happily host it for you.

  • I've been toying with a gothy/synthy cover of Weird Fishes in my head for a year. Maybe this thread will pull it out.

That I'd like to hear. Don't let Christmas get in your way. It's like the shopping thing, get it over with early...

    Were it only the shopping...

    Anyway, speaking of Radiohead covers...

  • I was trying to do a cover version of the 'Are you being served' theme tune using Korgs iDS-10, but as usual, I got bored and deleted it :*

Theres lots of covers of this out there in YT land. Some great some not so. This is easily up there with the best of them.
Whilst I appreciate this is your take on the original and not a note for note copy so to speak it would have been nice to have incorpateated the key chsnge lead synth riff from the French spoken second verse . Sends a shiver down my spine every time !
never the less, a quality take on the visage classic .

  • This was a bit of madness (literally) I did a few years back. I'm doing the musical bit and recorded a local nutter that had wandered in for the 'vocals'.

Thanks for that, glad you liked it.
I suppose I could have been a little more faithful to the original, but at the time I made it, I did it from memory and my memory ain't the greatest lol.

I think, as ever, our fearless leader has charged us with a good project here. While I've rarely looked at doing covers just the effort last night of noodling away at something different made me approach the instrumentation of what I was fiddling with more freely, felt a little loosed from the chokehold I typically apply to myself (albeit unconsciously). Probably be rubbish at the end of the day, but a good exercise for the conservative synapses.

I think this just goes to prove that you are indeed just a little bit insane......Love it B)
