Thanks for the comments guys, I'll give some feedback on your tracks when I'm on the PC tomorrow and can have a proper listen.

I thought the song was called "One Step Beyond" by Prince Buster ? Anyways really enjoyed cool vibe. Also the art work on your soundcloud songs are pretty cool.

Cheers! Could be, I only know the Madness version - title changed to throw the copyright sheriffs off the scent.

Nice version..... At the beginning of the vocal, I thought that there was a but of Eek A Mouse there?......... I thought, what a great idea, "Eek A Mouse" doing a Prince Buster Skank. :)

Thanks matey, don't know Eek A Mouse so I'll look that one up.

@MonzoPro nice bit of toe-tapping fun, and the vocal is indeed quite bonkers (although a tad quiet, would really like it notched up a bit). Bounces along nicely with just a bit of strangeness thrown in to make sure it doesn't get onto Radio One.

As Mrs Monzo's keen on telling me, I take a nice tune and stick something in there to spoil it :) Best not make it too popular anyway, my daughters currently getting airplay on there and I don't want to embarrass her.

This was a bit of madness (literally) I did a few years back. I'm doing the musical bit and recorded a local nutter that had wandered in for the 'vocals'.

BRILLIANT! Are you secretly Danny Elfman?

Lots of details to love but I'm particularly fond of the light synth doubling on the bass.

Thanks - yeah that's me, you got me tumbled!

Have them them all, & still listen to them all. Simply great times & memories...... Brixton Academy, Capital Radio Sunsplash........ Got 1TB & more, full of nothing but this sweet Jamacian music. It's quite funny looking at the Cypriots' looking at my truck as it's blarring out of my truck, then they start nodding to the rhythm. <3

Here is a recent cover I did of While My Guitar Gently Weeps by George Harrison (The Beatles).
I cheated a bit with the drums as they are from a midi file but are triggering the Alt Rock Kit in Sample Tank (saved a lot of time!). Organ is Cubasis and maybe Bass is also Cubasis (can't remember) but a bit of real bass too and all real guitars, using a preset I downloaded to Jamup Pro from the Tonecloud for the lead and a Tonestacj Acoustic for the rhythm part and vocals by me too.

Excellent cover @AlterEgo_UK. Really nice production, vocals and guitar

Sound of Silence, recorded as a live guitar/vocal performance with a USB mic and then a smidge of compression and reverb. It's a little raw, because I'm not the world's best live performer.

Very nice job! The extended verses on some sections caught me out at first, but grew on me throughout.
I'd love to be able to play guitar and sing, maybe one day!

Very good, big meaty bass sounds in that one. I like the original too.

    Thank you.

    @richardyot said:
@LeeB very nice production that actually puts the original to shame in terms of synth sounds and production values but I did keep hoping the vocal was going to come in at some point... Only feels like half a song without it.

Yeah, there's a small bit of me doing harmonised vox in there, but its subtle, as I'm by no means a singer.
I went for a more dubbed out club feel anyway, but would love to have someone that could do vocals too.
Thanks for the compliments on the mix, it was made in Nanostudio and mixed in Auria.

Normally I would have to disqualify a second entry for the month (direct contravention of the rules!). However as this is also a song that I have been playing for the last couple of years it's quite humbling to hear your version because it's a terrific performance, and it's a difficult song to cover since it is sung over two full octaves.

Everything about this is technically flawless: singing and guitar playing are excellent. The low register has a lovely resonance, the high register is beautifully smooth. When I sing this song I can just about hit the notes, but I don't have the intonation you have, with the resonance in the lows, and my highs are much wilder, and guitar playing is more akin to hammering, so listening to you makes me realise how much work I still need to do (not that I had too many illusions on that front).

The solo is obviously overdubbed, but were the guitar and vocal recorded at the same time? Because the guitar playing is very delicate and intricate, and that also is very hard to do while you are singing.

Yeah I'm sorry about that @richardyot, I would disqualify me if I were you. Really it's fine.

Yes I did play and sing together, but I did go back and overdub the little c g a riff in the intro, just couldn't get it smooth enough.

Thank you for the kind review!

Truth is I've been singing since I was a little kid:). Always loved singing along with old 45 s and then the am fm radio. I am old..but I'm happy!
But it wasn't till I got a four track cassette I started recording myself singing and probably tn yrs or so when I first tried singing and playing together. Never thought I could do it.
Never really sang and played in front of an audience yet. On my bucket list!

  • OK, so I started to sing aged 43 and three quarters. Should be OK by the time I hit 70. I'll master the playing and singing together thing sometime in the decade after that. :D

Your fine man! Just keep doin what you're doin, put the love in and all that feeling, that's all that really matters. And the occasional "that's pretty good"

My take on Visage's 'Fade to Grey' from 3 years ago, all done on iOS.

    Free download for anyone interested.

    Cheers

Interesting take, I listened to yours first before hearing the original for the first time. I like the main bass synth taking the simple groove and letting the second 'bass' fill in those extra staccato hits of the main progression. It is mixed well and has some nice transitions. Most importantly for me (who doesn't listen to a lot of dance/techno type stuff) the drums weren't blaring and pumping, so I appreciated that.

  • @trackedout said:

Love the original song. I like the character of the vocal here. The harmonies are great, but not quite sold on the lead vocal . I feel like the break of the song drags as well since it's just acoustic and bass, maybe it coulda dropped right into the vocal break. Good work overall though!

  • I don't mean to be dismissive of this one, it sounds good, but it just made me go immediately to the Johnny Cash version. He's got everyone beat, even the original performer of the song,

  • @Jose_Bee said:
Here's my cover of stranger things theme, using auria pro and patterning

I can't get on board with this one, sorry. IMHO, obviously:

The drums sounds (especially the snare) don't fit well with the synths and my idea of the theme being tension-filled. The drum pattern sorta gives it the feel of a ditty instead of a dark, thick soundscape.

The growl of the deep bass hits is fine, but the high octave doubling the main bass line is a weak, characterless sound.

Enjoyed the listen to someone else's take on the theme, nevertheless. It's a great one.

Manipulated violin segment from Stockhausen's "Solo" with added percussion and processed audio taken from a 60's Contac cold medication commercial (Contac...Kontakt...get it?):

Liked that. I remembered One of first experiments I did when I got in to a real studio recorded some stockhausen to tape then recorded the sound of dragging that tape at various speed across tape head. It was electronic stockhausen stuff so it already sounded insane before I messed with it
