It really depends on what you want to do. If you can wait, apps go on sale (or free) frequently so you can amass quite a collection if you watch the right websites.

But, Caustic. And watch the developer's videos. He has one for every major feature. Here's an overview:

  • It depends what kind of music you want to make, but I recommend Audiobus and Audioshare.

GarageBand + Complete Collection in-app purchase is hard to beat at $4.99.

    http://audiob.us/get/104/GarageBand

  • How much $ we talking here?

    Ding, ding, ding.

  • I wanna have fun :)

Then maybe make some tracks if I can
(but I doubt, I'm more a sofa jam kind of guy...)

On a more serious note I'm a guitar player and I have a couple of hardware synths.
    My musical tastes are flexible:
I like catchy pop songs but also experimental, drone and noise.
From Brian Wilson to Alva Noto.

I'd like to use more than one app at the time, and find the real strength of iOS music

No. I would recommend waiting on audiobus, it's about to become obsolete when version 3 comes out. Useless to purchase version 2 at this point only to buy version 3 in a month or two. Better to buy AUM instead.

GarageBand IAP is now free as well as the app itself... so it's an even better deal.

  • None is a must have really. There are tons of nice apps you wont be going to use, even tho they seem cool, there is an alternative app for pretty much anything essential you want to do with ipad. And it depends on what/how you want to produce music.

  • Just buy everything. You'll eventually have them all anyways...

  • Well, seem like this NI pic (To introduce Ableton link in Maschine 2.55) says it all.... Link is officially a Standard for Recording/Live music..
I would be sure to get apps with Link if I could ... I do use Samplr with 'Link to Midi'... Wish it gets the Link treatment someday soon ..

  • There's one or two apps that people get and upon doing so exclaim that everything they hitherto bought was an unnecessary waste of money and all they ever needed was that one app.

  • Auria (with in app purchase of Overloud THM)
    Drum Session
    GarageBand
    AudioShare

Thats my problem I've purchase every app except those "Two" off to purchase them now, I'd wish I seen this thread in 2010.

  • My Battery usage stats suggest my must have apps are Safari, Chrome, then Netflix...

ThumbJam is next on the list, I've been playing with the Arp and a custom patch from Animoog.

Now that I think about it, that would be my recommendation: ThumbJam! Definitely go get it. It has so many unique features that open your mind to new possibilities on iOS.

AudioShare, AUM, Audibus, Thumbjam, rhythm app, couple of synths, multi-fx and a DAW and you're cooking.

  • edited December 2016

    AUM is must have.
Gadget/Auria/cubasis could be, depending on you.
    Delay? Echopad/Aufx dub
    Reverb? Aufx space

Can't go wrong with samplr or patterning.

Your music taste sounds in line with mine.

AUM (to have multiple apps at the same time record-enabled)

Audioshare (for managing your samples and recordings; this one is a MUST)

Soundscaper (for the experimental/drone/noise side of you)

Animoog (because it is still has the most 'ooh factor' for someone getting started)

I chose those two because I think they, along with Samplr and Patterning, offer the most instant sofa fun without much learning curve.

They changed it around. You have to pay for the app, but you get the IAP for free.

oh and figure is free. Good for simple couch or travel fun.
No like? No harm, just delete.

It all started with figure on my end

  • @rumorazzi AUM has been recommended a lot, and it is awesome, as is its developer. But I would be cautious about spending too much on apps before knowing if making music on an iPad is something you're going to like and continue to do.

First get the free app Link to MIDI so you can sync your purchases Samplr and Patterning together. Get AUM to use as a mixer/recorder and AudioShare for file management. Pickup the wickedly cool effect frekvens for 99 cents and use multiple instances as iOS Audio Units in AUM. Skip the current version of AudioBus and pickup AudioBus 3 once it hits the App Store.

  • As a guitar player the most fun I have on iOS is MIDI Guitar 2. It's pure magic.

  • Bebot and Thumbjam are the only two must haves. Everything else depends on which musical holes need filling.

More likely than not, AudioBus, AUM and Audioshare will indeed fill a hole. Agree that waiting on AB3 is probably (hopefully?!) a sound move. If you want a place to start/browse, pretty much everything by the three devs represented there (A Tasty Pixel, Audanika, and Kymatica) are top notch apps.

If you'd really like to empty your wallet, visit http://discchord.com and watch videos from thesoundtestroom, Jakob Haq and Tim Webb(of Discchord)

Haha. You may spend 2 grand, and find after 5 years that you only really needed to spend 250.

But it will be the best 2Gs you've ever spent.

After all, back in the day that is the cost of one or maybe two instruments.

Now, i've got hundreds to choose from which is great.

    That said:

    Audiobus
    Aum
    StepPolyArp
    Beatmaker 2
    Arpeggionome Pro

    My basic DAW.

    iSEM
    Phasemaker
    Ruismaker FM
    Ruismaker
    Poison-202
    KQ MiniSynth
    Enkl
    Jussi
    Tines
    Phonem
    WaveMapper
    WaveGenerator
    FM Essential

    Because they're AU.

  • Blocs Wave, Launchpad, AUM, AudioBus, Cubasis, a truck load of filters...
