I think I might get maschine one of these days
Blocs wave + launchpad (with sample import iap)
Group the loop + audioshare + audiocopy
Garageband
Also AUM and newcoming AudioBus 3 and lots of synths...
For the synth pop and later drone noises just get Korg Gadget. That has enough in it to keep you occupied for six months or more. As you learn and grow with that tool you will probably reach out to other gadgets and then everything you have learned can be used in the wider world of iOS music. Worked for me
The guy has a Hardware Synth. So i´d figure he knows how to operate a synth. He´s a guitar player. Can´t record a guitar into Gadget. So Gadget is exactly not what he should spend his money on.
If you´re into Drones/Ambient you´ll love the Korg iWavestation synth. It´s actually amazing, to have this legendary synth brought to full glory on an iPad, since the touchscreen is just great for it. I recommend Cubasis as a DAW. One other Synth that you will just love is the Moog Model 15, a modular synth that is even polyphonic, with a ribbon controller. You´ll create the nastiest Drones imaginable, and all other sounds you want!
Can't say for sure if these are must have, but I strongly recommend them:
Sound generators:
Animoog - Great synth, iOS only
Nave - Quality wavetable synth, allows you to import audio and convert to wavetable, nice interface
Mitosynth - Another synth unique to iOS, and just unique in itself
TC-11 - Somewhat complex synth that embraces the touch screen as a controller
iMS-20 - Great Korg synth that includes a song mode
Tools:
Audioshare - An extremely useful app for storing audio files and getting them to and from other apps
AUM - A mixer and companion to Audioshare, nicely designed and a joy to use
AUFX: Push - A useful compressor for use with AUM, and from the same developer
SECTOR - A great sample slicer, from the developer of Audioshare, AUM, and AUFX: Push
Borderlands Granular- Granular sampler, another iOS gem
Audiobus - A useful tool for connecting different apps together on iOS
ChordPolyPad - A great midi controller
StepPolyArp - A unique midi controller
Fugue Machine - Another unique midi controller
Gestrument - Yet another unique midi controller
Korg gadget, beatmaker 2 (or wait until 3 comes out), sunrizer.
Audioshare, the rest is subjective
Hi, total new guy here. Been a Reason user since version 1.1. I'm curious why there's no mention of Thor. That's an awesome semi-modular synth, deep, and comes with 1000 presets. Also has a very well thought out UI for sofa jam, I think.
I was in the same boat, had a couple of hardware synths was mainly a guitar player, Gadget was exactly what I needed. The range of sounds and ease of combining lots of different tracks with an easy to use piano roll for note inputs, that with the all-in-one nature of Gadget was a real push in getting me writing and more importantly finishing songs. Don't use Gadget much anymore, Cubasis is one of the main apps I use but that initial jump into iOS music came about because of Gadget and its easy workflow.
Welcome to the forum![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
From my perspective, the reason it is not mentioned as much now is that updates are often slow in coming out. My personal experience of Thor is that it has been buggy on my Air2 for all of the time I have had it. It is currently more usable than its ever been, but still has one bug that destroys my desire to use it.
Shame, it is indeed an excellent synth when it works properly.
Great advices here, thanks!![ ](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smiley.png)
Should I worry that I am a long term IOS music maker, and don't have quite a few of people's "essential" apps?!
My list would have to include Thumbjam, most likely Gadget too.
Limitation sparks creativity, there´s just no question about it. The moment you start with Gadget you wanna push it, see what you can get out of it, and you´re writing some actual music, instead of jerking around with some virtual cables on a Model 15 and getting nothing done
But if you don´t get the sound character that you crave, it´s a little disappointing. Don´t wanna hijack this, having a thread about Gadget already going https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/16474/i-think-i-finally-figured-out-what-gadget-is-supposed-to-be#latest
This really depend on what kind music you want to make...
But personnaly, as a repented music-appaholic, if I could rewind and cancel some of my purchases (most in fact), I would get only Korg Gadget + iAPs + Module + iM1 + OddysseI + iWavestation to make backing tracks/beats from EDM to Hip Hop, BM2 (only for the sample editing/chopping functions in order to feed Bilbao and Abu Dhabi in Gadget) and Cubasis + Filters to record additional instruments/voices on my tracks/beats...
Oh and I'll take also controllers like Fiddle, Chordion and Soundprism that help composing in Gadget when I'm not able to transport/use an external midi keyboard...
And of course, I will get Audiobus (just a as a sign of gratitude for hosting the best iOS music forum ever lol) and Thumbjam (because it is fantastic for its price).
As a guitar player, then one of the amp sims would seem logical, my particular weapon of choice on that front is Yonac Tonestack....there are others...and they have their supporters too.
Other than that then if you want to control external gear and play and record your guitar alongside then cubasis or Auria are the obvious choices, Cubasis has the edge on the simplicity front.
If you want to primarily sequence your external gear and not that fussed about recording your guitar then ModStep.
Audioshare and AUM should be on every music making iPad/.iPhone in the universe.
For fun and dabbling and just messing with loops then blocs wave and Launchpad
If you just wanna dip your toe in and see whats possible then Garageband.
For an easy access great sounding analogue synth Poison 202, for great sound and anal programming then Moog Model 15 or iVCS3
For an all rounder that is going to grow...FLM3
You'll be disappointed not satisfying your cravings in any environment, many people have produced fantastic music in Gadget here on the forums and out in the wider internet. That speaks for itself.
It will always be a matter of taste, but without the right effects, especially a good reverb, tape saturation, overdrive and compressor it just doesn´t sound good to me...
Sure I would enjoy some other effects, just as other people would enjoy extra features, but it is still a rock solid tool for some types of songwriting, sound design, audio production and a great overall package for newcomers to iOS music as well as seasoned professionals who enjoy the simplicity and subjectively great sound.
Pretty spot on, but I'd Audiobus, too.
Depends...
Had I know what I know today I'd spend my cash on Cubasis, Korg-Stuff (Got all except Gorrilas iElectribe and a few Module IAPs), AUv3's (Ruis/Phaseaker, Viking, Poison-202, iSEM etc.).
And well, my iPad would feel 'empty' without SunVox, SidTracker64 and a few others...
Same here. With AudioCopy, it remains my go-to.
There is a nice app roundup from MusicAppBlog - ’25 iOS music apps to get you started’

How about youtube/soundcloud links to music that's like what you're trying to make?
Thanks for the welcome and the info, FB1919, and yes that is a shame. I use it a lot within Reason.
I would use it a lot within reason, as well. But on iOS I have much more interesting synths, at the moment. Doesn't feel like there's much of a commitment from propellerheads, either. More like a one-shot thing.
Now if they made it into an AU, and started bringing more of that reason goodness to iOS, as separate apps, which would eventually grow into a reason for ios...
Given our similar taste, I'm curious, did you get any of the Module IAPs? Also, by Fiddle, you mean FingerFiddle? And if you like that, have you seen GuitarCapo+?
Hello man, I got all Modules iAPs (the only Korg iAPs I did not get are the iAPs for Arp OddysseI as they seem really expensive for just background color changes and a few additional presets)... And I must say that I'm loving all of them, expecially the Ivory Grand Piano which sounds so good on Gadget tracks ;-)
No, I was not trying to mention FingerFiddle to be frank (enven though I like this app)... I can't remember the name of the music app I'm thinking about and I have not my iPad near me right now (at work) sorry (it is kind of an educational app where you can compose on 4 little tracks and the interface provides a full set of chords all sounding well together, really great to test and find new chord progressions IMO...).
Jam up pro, cubasis, drum session and your guitar and you would never get bored. Ever!
And dont forget Turnado,SoundPrism,Sunrizer,ThumbJam,DrumJam (Also works great as a midi controller for example cubasis mini sampler and create your own drumsets)
Just for accuracy, I'd like to clarify that some limitationS can spark creativity in some individuals in certain circumstances.
