  • Is there a bit of Swedish bias in Haq's top 10? ;)

These are my picks, in no particular order...

    AUM
    iSpark
    Poison-202
    Blocs Wave
    Phasemaker
    Moebius Lab
Different Drummer (went universal, I'm counting it)
    Cubasis 2
    DM2
modstep (came out at the end of December 2015, I'm counting it)

    DRC
Dhalang(don't own this but looks like I should and it should be here, so cheating)

Think I agree on Dhalang. So, Frum? Had fun with this? Continuing to? I put it down very quickly (20 minutes probably, mea culpa) and have been wondering if I should at least go for a proper walk around the block etc...

    OK here my top picks:

    AUM
    Model 15
    Poison 202
    Blocks Wave
    AC Sabre
    iSpark
    DRC
    Soft Drummer
    Infinite Looper
    Viking

If the new Korg Synths wasn't crippled by poor MIDI implementation I guess the list would contain a coupel of those.

Oo, really curious about your experience with AC Sabre. Does it allow for lasting expressiveness or is it more like a passing fancy kind of thing you think?

AUM - Best music tool on iOS to bring it all together.
DRC - Great synth with it's own organic feel.
ARP ODYSSEi - Quality synth from Korg.
Lofionic Duplicat - Nice AU effect.
iWAVESTATION - Still haven't explored this much, but seems much improved over previous versions for patch making.

Adding these two recently purchased AUs to the list, because they are not only good, but a joy to use in AUM:

    DDMF 6144 NeveEQ
    DDMF Envelope Reverb

Still not a top ten, but getting closer!

I'm very interested in these two apps. First I need to pick up AUM. I have Viking synth, iSem, Pads by Klevgr and some other audio unit apps. Just wondering if you have Virsyns' AudioReverb and how it compares to DDMFs' reverb
    Thanks

Ok thanks for your efforts here. I just gave a listen to these tracks. First the dry, then DDMF and finally Virsyn. I used my Sennheiser 650HDs to have a very good listen. I would agree I also prefer the Virsyn. It definitely distributes the reverb beautifully throughout and the audio quality is smoother. The DDMF to my ears made the piano too echoed and out of place in the aural landscape. The Virsyn spiced the instrumentation just right.
Good news for me because I purchased Virsyns' AudioReverb a while back and because it's AU I'm covered. I still might like to get the DDMF EQ unless you can sway me:)
    Thanks again

  • @Arpseechord Have you looked into VirSyn's new AudioEffX app?

Looks interesting and it's on sale right now. Do you have this and what are your thoughts?
    Thanks
Whoops typed the parametric eq comment in the wrong area...lol

No, I'm in wait and see mode, but it's the FX app I'm most interested in. I'm partial to mult-FX units.

Seems very solid. I just watched synth anatomy and pantsofdeath youtube videos
    Very good indeed
How long are your wait and see modes? Lol

  • Korg ODYSSEi is by far my favorite app of the year. Surprised it's not getting more love on this thread.

Too new and pricey for many, I reckon.

  • For apps released in 2016, I echo the favorites like:

AUM ,along with AudioBus & AudioShare it's the Holy Trinity of iOS music production. Regardless of genre, every producer needs these three.
Model 15 is just incredible... it's a modular Moog in the palm of your hands, no more to say.
DRC is just a great synth with a development team that really takes care of it's user base. Any questions or issues I've had get dealt with fast and professionally.
iSPARK while on sale is too cool too pass up, plus never can have enough drum machines.
Drum Session is going to be huge in 2017, with every update Derek keeps raising the bar, plus he genuinely wants feedback and listens to suggestions. He doesn't have the big head of "my app is perfect", he is in a marathon and will make Drum Session better and better every update.

Now the real outta nowhere for me is the DDMF Neve EQ. I said in it's thread that I have a few buddies who have stout project studios they do demos & sessions in for a living and they have lunchbox preamp setups to die for. API, Neve, etc. The DDMF does that same round magic EQ thing that never gets artificial or sticky.

My favorite apps out before 2016 but purchased by me this year for the first time, so new to me:

Auria will remain my main DAW but Cubasis 2 is so cool to experiment with and work quick MIDI tracks on. The sampler and Mellotron TAPE sounds were worth the $14.99 upgrade from LE, which I got activated through my interface.

iM1 is another older app that I got on sale and just love. Bought the expansion packs on sale too, so have thousands of sounds all editable...tons of possibilities.

Have to lastly throw the FabFilter Auria plug ins because I just got into them less than a month ago. Timesless 2 & Saturn are so unique and creativity just pops when using them, very inspirational with just a Rhodes piano put through Timeless and then experimenting between putting Saturn before or after.

Pro-C2 and Pro-Q2 are desktop quality...the exact same plugins Dave Pensado and other mix gurus use on their YouTube tutorials to demonstrate techniques. They all put those two plugs over like rover...just some extremely high quality tools to have in the toolbox.

Just my $0.02...I could list 10 in both categories (New in 2016 & New to me) but I write enough novellas...

  • AUM
    Moebius Lab
    Duplicat
    DRC
    Shoom
    RF-1
    RP-1
    SwarPlug
    VoxSyn
    DM2

  • I don't think I even have 10 music apps on my iOS devices these days, but Model15 and the new Auxy both got way more use here than any other music apps have before. So those would be my vote. :)

I just picked up AUM for myself. I never thought I needed it because even some of the video reviews mentioned it was geared towards those who do live performances (which I don't do). Now I can understand your lists praising AUM. My list would be filled wiht multiple instances of AUM as well. All that goodness in only 3.5 mb, it's like having your favorite dessert and also realizing it is also only 1 calorie.

  • I am shocked not to see FLUX PAD!

    My God.

My opinion is FLUX PAD is the app of the year for creativity!

That is my partner app for Samplr my true creative approach to things.

    AUM of course.

2016 for me was the year of using an iPhone much more than my iPads. Felt like a great year for iPhone music production. Lots of apps became universal.

Was also the year I dipped into hardware (PO12, Volca Keys, Circuit)

My top 10 (all of which work on iPhone):

    • Gadget going universal (2016??)
    • AUM (amazing for mixing music and FX apps with hardware)
    • iWavestation (a treasure trove I've only just skimmed the surface of)
    • Oddessei (sounds great although fraustrating faders)
    • Model15
    • Infinite Looper
    • Hook (gonna throw this in as a wild card for easy grabbing of samples from Spotify)
    • Blocs Wave
    • Different drummer (on iPhone)
    • TC11 for iPhone (although it seems to have dropped ACP support for its recordings)

    Special mention MidiLinkSync (invaluable!!)

And when did MidiFlow come out?

It didn't occur to me because I've yet to try Gadget on the small screen. How was it making that transition? I'm curious to try it now.

As an eavesdropping bystander who rarely uses the phone for music, I find Gadget on the thing to be really good....

Thanks. I remember you saying you would give it a go after you got your new phone. I know Matt spends a lot of time in Gadget, so I'm keen to get his take, as well.

Well it's a good question. I guess if I'm honest:

    • I found that in 2016 I had less time to break out the iPad for a serious sustained two handed music session
    • I found Gadget just about usable for one handed iPhone twiddling on public transport and in spare moments throughout the day
    • I'm upgrading from a 6 to a 6 plus because I think it will make things like Lexington easier on the phone
    • I think that the transition has meant I've started more tracks and finished fewer in 2016 (not sure that's necessaily a bad thing though)
    • If I am really getting somewhere with an idea / track on the iPhone it's really super easy to take it onto the iPad. The iCloud thing in Gadget is really fantastic.

Hope that helps and Happy Christmas :).
