Moodscaper update

  • @moodscaper - Rob, after watching the vid and reading the description, it's still unclear to me ... is the current choice to toggle between reverb and delay, rather than the option to dial in and independently control both? If so, I vote a bit more stone-chipping - even something as simple as splitting that tile or facilitating a tile flip for access to both.

Disregard if independent control for both remains and I just missed it

BTW, your app is the kind of thing Steve Jobs had in mind when he said the iPad was "magical." I can think of few other iOS music apps so immediately immersive. Congrats on your accomplishment :+1:

The current version of the app has only one review and it's negative citing the removal of two of the loopers and recommended skipping the update.

Then they must be displayed on a teritorial basis. Here in the U.K., the App Store is bursting with favourable Moodscaper reviews, including one from me.

BTW, I don't think I'm alone in preferring to read what I perceive as honest reviews about any app. Less than 3 stars from a number of reviewers would flag an app as possibly troublesome, depending on the details. But I've bought a great many 4 star reviewed apps, where people have praised the product yet left themselves somewhere to go when features are added or bugs squashed.

The older reviews are favorable. I tend to put more stock in what the people on the various app sites and here have to say about an app than the App Store reviews. If the review lists specific reasons for why they have issues with the app it's much more useful.

For an app with lots of sales to people who are primarily buying the app to listen to it by pushing the auto play button, they probably don't go to music app sites or forums.

The app definitely has a lot going on under the hood musically and it can certainly be used by musicians as Rob has a manual (needs an update though) with the details for those who want to delve deeper.

In terms of a pro version of the app, it'd be nice if he made an easier path for setting up and importing your own sounds similar to the way you can create your own ESX24 instruments in Logic.

Hi Guys, thanks for the feedback, and sorry my quick video lacks any dialogue / narration - that would probably take me a long time and I'm not really set up or talented in that department to do proper pro Doug-standard demo videos. :) With QuickTime, I can record and upload a screen / audio grab demo in 10-15 minutes.

Just to confirm, the toggling reverb / delay thing is just sharing the same button location to accommodate having one of the loopers back. And something you maybe didn't know is that there are 2 delays with complimentary delay times, long and short. The delay slider controls several parameters of both delays, and the signal chain under the hood remains this same.

voice mixer -> filter -> short delay -> long delay -> reverb -> out

And yep, the manual needs an update. I might re-structure this to a "quick start" guide like the pianoscaper one, plus two "advanced" guides / tutorials for loading your own sounds and advanced looping features.

I've actually had a few messages from people asking questions and when I refer them to the manual, they say "oh yeah - that's too long, didn't read, thought it'd be quicker to ask by email" :)

I also wanted to do some kind of on-boarding, but it's quite a bit of work to do that nicely.

Never enough time to do all the stuff I'd like to do! As you may have gathered by now, this isn't my full time job. I'd love it if it was, of course!

Thanks for all the feedback and comments guys - most helpful. I'm thinking of releasing this v1.9.9a as while it's by no means a perfect solution, it's a little step (back) in the right direction? Cheers, -Rob

This looks really great; exactly the sort of compromise I was thinking of in my post. It will be nice to have a dedicated left-side looper again, for use with either sliders or pads. Having 4 loopers does seem like the perfect number, as I rarely used all 5 on a project... it made the sound just too busy. Thanks again, very much looking forward to this change.

  • Thanks guys - I've done some testing of this build and there are a couple of other fixes I'd like to release too. Uploading this build as we speak. I think we're generally agreed, that while it isn't perfect, we're getting there slowly. Cheers.

    Well done.

Cash reserved for that Pro version.... one day. ;)

Fair comment, but I disagree on this.

I agree with your disagreement. ;)

The nature of any IAP, if that is the route chosen, can be made clear. Few are going to accidentally buy something if it's features are properly explained.

A full on Pro version in the App Store would instantly separate the fun app from a music making tool, if Rob has the time and inclination.

  • Appreciate the work Rob. And enjoying the app. I'd like to thank you.

Thank you for all of your work and consideration. On the videos it might be easier to do them as you have been and then as you watch them record a description of what you're doing and paste that audio track into the video. Many people do seem to prefer short videos versus a manual. The numbered buttons and accompanying description might be a good option to build into the app with a ? button people can press to bring them up along the lines of what Patterning, VirSyn, or GeoShred have.

  • Yeah videos are best for me :)

  • I don't use the two extra loopers on the secondary page. I like the new features.

I suppose because the three on the first page are sufficient for my needs? Maybe I'm just too simple of an electronic musician but I also think it is because I haven't yet figured out a use for them!

  • Here’s a track using the latest version of moodscaper. I recorded it a few weeks ago, while sitting at a desk in my hotel room at Circus Circus in Las Vegas. There are no edits, except for trimming the beginning and end. I did add a fade-in and fade-out. Otherwise, it's real-time with no other synth apps.

I loaded moodscaper into AUM to bring it into Audiobus. I used Mobile Convolution Reverb as an effect and Auria Pro to record it. Then I ran it through the Lurssen Mastering Console app.

  • Was playing this yesterday on the metro and this app really works in distressing you from a rough day at work. I wanna buy the Pianoscaper but held off any of you guys have it?

I bought it and have had some success messing around with it. Maybe it's me, but I find moodscaper to be more musical than pianoscaper. The sounds seem to be better suited for being played like a musical instrument.
