If you mean to send MIDI from Xequence to AEM, then Xequence doesn't need to show up in AEM at all -- It is enough to select AEM as MIDI Destination in a Xequence Instrument.
(I haven't tried sending MIDI from Xequence to AEM yet. If you continue to have problems or AEM doesn't show up in Xequence, then let me know (AEM might also not support control of its hosted apps via external MIDI))
Then AEM probably doesn't support being controlled externally. Is the developer reading along here? @dwrae?
Calling @dwrae :Can you address @SevenSystems query?
I’m certain I have managed to use AEM and xequence together, but that is some versions ago. I haven’t tried lately.
Sorry, I meant AUM. Confusing myself here lol
I'll try to reproduce it. Not sure if there is another technology that I have missed on iOS. The app should support AudioBus, IAA, AUv3 and the standard iOS MIDI. Not sure what xequence uses/expects?
Just tried Xequence midi to AEM on a iPad. AEM not showing as a midi destination inside Xequence. Just network session on both. I tried using the MidiFlow app as a go between creating a local in and local out port. Local in shows up in Xequence but local out not showing up in AEM as output. So suspect AEM currently doesn’t accept midi in data. Maybe a bug.
On a side note Xequence is showing up as a midi out port inside AEM.
I never bought multitrackdaw nor Xequence ....so this seems a Very attractive app for IPhone and IOS 9 users and since it is small sized, but...
Can you then record Midi notes inside AEM coming from other apps like stepolyarp or thesys ? Can you then consider AEM also a good sketch Midi track?
Can you send out Midi notes and Cc to hardware from AEM tracks ?
Does it import Midi files easily ? Does it split automatically Big MIDI files as multitracks?
Thks for your answers
@dwrae Xequence looks for CoreMIDI Virtual Destinations so it can send MIDI to them. You might have missed something because AEM is the first iOS app I see which doesn't expose a virtual MIDI destination.
See https://developer.apple.com/documentation/coremidi/1495347-mididestinationcreate
I loaded some standard MIDI files into AEMS and they worked great. They selected the correct instruments from the default General MIDI Soundfont and just played. I had a better experience with then than on Cubasis (which selected some aweful instruments and sent me off to buy iSymphonics packs),
BS-16i (which has terrible latency so I can play along with any MIDI file... just play them) and Xequence which requires me to load sound playing targets and assign every track.
As a one stop product AEMS really seem to do a lot of things well... I'm downloading the 1.5GB Orchestra SoundFont for $12 to see how much it improves the Beethoven Symphony over the default soundfont.
There are also some Loop IAP's (2 are free) in the product.
AEM lists the available Core MIDI inputs in the track's input dialog. In the current version it does not support sending to AEM, but that will be supported soon. You can enter and playback about any regular MIDI event, like CC, PC, aftertouch etc.
You can import MIDI files. To get them inside AEM, you can for example use the Media server and copy from other computers/devices. It splits MIDI type 1 files into multiple tracks. Besides that, at any time, you can split any MIDI track into multiple tracks, split by MIDI channel.
Thanks! At the moment, it uses MIDIGetSource() and MIDIGetDestination(), but does not create a destination itself. I did not add it since the app is not a synth and it would be more logical to select a virtual MIDI input as input in the track's channel, since then it's clear where the MIDI data actually enters. Apparently that doesn't work for Xequence?
I've been quite busy gathering all feedback, sorry that I didn't reply directly.
Yeah that doesn't work, Xequence expects it the other way around, it wants to connect itself to (multiple) destinations. It's the more logical approach for a multitrack sequencer because the user can setup everything inside one app (as long as all target apps listen on their destinations). For its MIDI input Xequence can do both "directions" (creates its own destination + can connect to other sources the user selects).
(P.D. I get that the app is not a synth but as you can see, the iOS music making bunch is quite demanding and they want to abuse a DAW as a host, so there you have it )
@McDtracy
For the sake of completeness, if you select your GM synth app under "MIDI Destination for created Instruments" in the Import Dialog, no assignment should be necessary and the file should play correctly straight after import. PM me if you continue having issues!
LOL, yeah, it's not a problem, I will add it.
Virtual MIDI input is added for next release

@dwrae - so a few days in, I’m really loving this DAW (on my iPhone)!
There’s some really powerful functionality in the midi editing.
For example I love the colour coding of the different midi channel events in the midi clips.
I’ve now successfully used it as an MPE enabled DAW - driving the Roli Noise app hosted in AUM. Once I got it all set up it seems to work pretty well, and record all the correct data from my Roli Lightblock and also from the MPE ‘Aftertouch’ app. (The only one exception is recording channel pressure aka Aftertouch. I can’t seem to get AEMS to record any of it!)
Audio editing and processing is fantastically easy. And getting audio in and out via Audioshare works amazingly well. Brilliant and quick integration. To be honest if someone just used it as a companion to AudioShare to process and edit audio files on ones phone, it would be worth the price just for that!
@SevenSystems @dwrae : I have both these apps. It would be KILLER to have them working in tandem w each other . The dynamic duo .
So great to see two developers putting their heads together here. A first so far as I know!🤸🏼♂️🕺🤸🏼♂️
Thanks! I'll look into the aftertouch problem.
@dwrae
Thks for your replies !
I ve bought your app
AFAIU, the next update to AEM should make that possible
Many thanks, really appreciated!!
‘Aftertouch’ app. (The only one exception is recording channel pressure aka Aftertouch. I can’t seem to get AEMS to record any of it!)
I just found out that the code explicitly filters our these messages. Perhaps it was a performance or clutter problem in the past. I'll see if I will just enable it or have it as an option.
First impression:
The Orchestra Sound Pack is a 1.5GB download. It failed at the last second twice. Each down load taking well over an hour.
Then I noticed all the component Sound Packs (Brass, Strings, etc) could be selected for download independently after the bundle purchase (you have to scroll down to notice that). So, I tried that and the first attempt failed but all after that worked.
I play the Strings and Brass a bit and they are probably on a par with the better SF2 Orchestra's out there. I think the main benefit will be the Percussion Pack because iSymphonic only offers one snare drum and it's a "flammed" double note so playing precise snare patterns is useless.
I think rendering a complex symphonic work with several Orchestra's and documenting the effort to get it done might be a good "Listening Poll" type of project. I know @Kuhl has most of them and has the skills to render them. Something like a 2-3 minute Orchestra workout... maybe "Also Sprach Zarathustra" (the 2001 theme) which has Brass, Tympani and hopefully some representative string playing. I don't recall.
As an "All-in-One" DAW AEMS is doing quite well so far. I noticed 2 Free Loop packs... I don't have many skills with Loop-based composing (yet) since I keep buying new Apps and not really
learning to compose on IOS. It's a hobby and I tinker.
