Well played!
Holy cow this is the most enjoyably obscure thread of the week. Reminds me of this old chestnut:
You are quite right! It is hard for me to find the "tone in the middle", especially when i am dissatisfied. Maybe the sound quality issues (from my point of view they exist) depend on the iPad i have. Another point is: I think from developer perspective it is very hard to make a good and balanced FM/phase distortion synth. As a consumer (what i am) i think: A typical sound should be useable for about 4 octaves without strong aliasing - > but i think this is complicate to make for an developer: with a PM synth.
I am much more forgiving for the Redshrike synth (this one is more expressive, a bit more versatile - and here i think: it is OK, even knowing there is strong/ugly aliasing, too). When i am asking myself, why i do have such a strong opinion against Phase84, there are 2 main factors (beside the issues this softsynth has, like regular quitting after 30 minutes of use, crackles, problems with intermittend envelope clicks and, last but not least, my limited english language skills):
I have had a complete wrong idea about this synth. I thought that the Phase84 will offer something what can be compared with a CZ hardware synth. Wrong idea, maybe my fault.
I just dont like the sound. Really: I hate the sound. Phase84 is my definition of an ugly sounding softsynth with very limited capabilities.
Sorry. Even when i am trying, i dont find a way to mask my disappointment.
A song challenge (with the "perc" sounds) would be a great fun!
I find the amp / shaper graphic interface to be quite nifty. It might lack the clarity of some of the higher end ios synths but as with all of them, it has its own individual sound. Wasn't much of a fan of tabletop from way back when, but have so far enjoyed playing with it.
