  • Man, it's about time we get effects reordering. Trying to recreate what I already did with one effect just to move it down a slot was EXTREMELY time-consuming. :) And I'm so glad we can loop bars now. Having to wait for 7 bars to pass just to see if I timed a reverse crash cymbal correctly was a pain.

I don't think this has been mentioned yet but they added the option for "audio" for track naming. Not a big deal but for those that liked everything to be labelled, it's good for organization when you have a lot going on.

The fact that previously we could only name tracks drum, pad, lead or bass was ridiculous (having 2 tracks labelled lead means nothing - being able to label 1 track guitar and another sax would actually be useful), but the audio label is completely superfluous. It's obvious a track is audio just by the waveform in the clip, and if you have 2 Zurich tracks, labelling both of them audio is not going to really provide any useful point of reference.

How hard is it to allow us to label tracks with custom names that will actually mean something in the context of the song?

  • I tried it but couldn't move the insert effects around

I definitely agree lol, Seems like it should be a simple update. It's been like 3 years already! But im definitely happy with this update.

Ah. Make sure you've actually updated Gadget first, because it won't work. Then, from the scenes view, expand the mixer and access the effects via the mixer. This won't work when accessing the effects from the piano roll view. This ONLY works from the scenes view in the mixer.

Anyways, once you have a track's effects visible in the scenes view, press "function". You'll see up and down arrows over the effects. These will move your track's effects to wherever you want them to go.

Undocumented removed feature number 2 (unconfirmed): apparently you can no longer copy multiple bars by holding the + button in the piano roll. One at a time. Is this true? I only did one at a time to begin with.

Wow - I haven't upgraded yet - but just checked. Never ever knew you could copy multiple bars with that long press!!

Neither did I! I'm liking this thread

This feature does appear to still work. Even better I wasn't aware of it and now I am :) Thanks and yet further confirmation that the AF is as cool AF.

Did anyone notice that Zurich adds tape saturation and seems to be some compression as well!!!! So it is not just audio recorder but complete tape machine emulation. It now makes total sense to freeze tracks and import audio to Zurich - https://www.idesignsound.com/tape-emulation-with-korg-gadget-zurich/

So it is not obvious from the first sight but if you want clean audio file/recording playback you need to use rosario and turn off all the effects there.

Yes and you can then add some gain to give it a boost, and then add an eq insert effect and maybe a little chorus... the other neat aspect is each scene can load its own loop. In effect the new Gadget is a little like Launchpad.

  • From @richlum in another thread:

You can import more than 16 bars. The scene you import to will only play the first 16 bars (assuming you have it set to be 16 bars long).
    Duplicate the scene.
Open the wave editor for scene 2 and you will see the whole wav that you imported and you drag the first white marker to the end of scene 1.
Now if you place from scene 1 to scene 2, it will place the whole wave continuously.

Doh! Hadn’t even noticed you could freeze tracks. Pretty obvious in “Func” in portrait mode, on iPhone. But wasn’t visible in landscape mode without switching between views.
Should really go through that 2014 manual, at some point. Or, hopefully, Korg will come out with an update for Gadget 3, including Zurich?

  • Help me out here, somebody's feed me some bad liquor or something. I cannot get the "Import a long audio clip in Zürich and duplicate feature" to work. Sounds like I'm supposed to duplicate the scene and then slide the white triangle all the way over to the right. But if I started with 16 bars I can only slide it to the 15th. I can see the rest of my imported audio past the 16th bar but how do I access it in this second scene? Thanks in advance, you can find me in detox if you need me.

  • Right, I had the same experience initially. Use 2 fingers to scroll right on the waveform and you'll see the rest of the waveform. You can also pinch to see more of it. Adjust the track marker bars on the waveform rather than the loop points at the top. Hope that helps.

Thank you!!! That is awesome. bass and drum parts sound very cool this way!

This means it is simple to add some silence.....
Load your audio clip into Zurich/Rosario - add a scene before it with however many bars you want silence.....freeze the track, then pull the new frozen audio into Zurich/Rosario

  • Zurich could have been so much better with the audio start and end points changeable from the gadget. Lots of screen space available for a little window inside with some time code. Better still a fast forward/rewind button, turning the reels, to set the audio start point.

Another feature needed is the ability to choose scenes from the transport bar at the bottom so as to reduce time spent going repetitively from one screen to the other when trimming audio...

That's a good workaround for adding space before the imported sample :)

  • Inside Zürich's / Rosario's import file chooser you can finally rename the Abu Dhabi / Bilbao user samples (open the menu via the three dots).

  • Talking of effect slot re-ordering (top of this page and from prev pages), when a gadget has its own internal effect, such as reverb or suchlike, and then there’s the same effect in the mixer insert, which do you tend to prefer – using the gadget’s own effect, or omitting that and using the mixer insert effect instead?

That is a good question, as I was wondering about the same.

oftentimes I use the mixer effect strictly for sound sculpting, i.e. Compression, EQ and filtering. For reverb I'll often use the master send. And with the gadget inserts I'll most often use those for saturation. Some gadgets have more than one fx slot, a modulation fx and an ambience fx. Naturally the ambience fx can give you a little extra reverb or delay.

i only use mixer fx as placeholders since they disappear when you export individual tracks to dropbox (i mix in auria). so i only really use a dash of the master reverb while i'm building tracks and disable it when i export (just in case). i do use some of the internal synth fx, when they are integral to the sound i'm building, or patch i'm using and also if want to automate stuff.

  • Anyone know a hack for accessing the transport bar etc, from the double-tapped, fullscreen gadgets? Wouldn’t you think that this would be cool (not to mention an absolute requirement)? If I’m trying to play in a part using the full screen of my 12.9 Pro, being able to access the transport to record arm, punch-in, and stop, rewind, yada yada, would be the cat’s pajamas. (And I’d like to do it without having to buy a Korg keyboard, thank you very much.)

It’s amazing just how obtuse Korg can be about the most basic UI issues:

    • Track naming... how hard can this really be???
    • Ability to place the playhead at will.
    • Loop markers that actually obey your finger. I can’t manage the little buggers even on my 12.9” iPad.
    • My complaint above about no transport control access in fullscreen gadget mode.

Sorry... just starting to finally get into using Gadget, and though I’m loving it, it has these quirky deficits that make the possibility of undocumented solutions something to hope for. For now, however, I have to live with the frustration! 🙃

Power tip - you can move the playhead to a certain point in a scene by doing a double tap in the top bar area while the scene is playing. (For example move playhead to say bar 6 of 8 bar scene). It's a bit finicky but it works and helps.

Never cared about track naming personally. You have visual cues by whatever Gadgets you've chosen.

Loop markers - yeah you often end up with clicks and pops if you try to adjust in Gadget. That's why I edit things in AudioShare with a nice fade in/out before importing to Gadget.

I think everyone has one or two big feature gripes with Gadget - I gave up wishing for some things long ago(better loop point editing was one). For all it's quirks - I still love using Gadget probably more than any other app - been using it now since the month it was released....
