VirtualRoom Pro: binaural rendering for Audiobus
Hi everyone,
Our new binaural rendering app just came out. The introductory price is $2.99/€3. A no-brainer if you're into binaural audio, I'd say. :-)

Would be cool as an AU plugin
Yes, definitely. I'll look into Audiobus 3 as soon as it comes out. Possibly an AB3 update would already enable AUv3.
Cool.
Cool!
A natural next 'step' would be to automate the movement of the 'head' in the room, or the 'sound sources'
(This would be crazy cool as AUv3 to 'place' different instruments in different places).
This might be up my ally and will likely check it out... But could please at least add background audio to your DAONE synth? I'd sure use it more if you did.
Would be better if it worked.
In AB I only ever see one speaker.
The description clearly refers to sound sourceS and loudspeaker symbolS
also the record function button doesn't do anything in AB
Standalone the record button works and quite nicely opens up the open in dialogue for easy export to app of your choice i.e. AudioShare once recording has finished.
You mean that when it's connected just to a MIDI device, you can play it via MIDI even when it's in the background? Because with Audiobus it works already in the background.
Yeah, originally it should have been stereo with Audiobus. But unfortunately it seems that the filter port can receive only mono audio for some reason. I've posted that issue in the developer forum, but didn't receive any answer. Probably the Audiobus developers are too busy with AB3... I'll definitely fix this issue with the first update, and maybe even throw in an extra stereo input port to have 4 sources.
The recording is disabled while using Audiobus. I could probably change that (it comes from some of my other apps that allow also screen recording, which definitely must be disabled when Audiobus is active).
Can this be used like Waves nx or Tb Isone pro to emulate working on monitors?
Yes, I know. But I like to midi control/play other synths with apps like TC-Data or AC Sabre. Not recording, just playing. And, I don't like having to load DAONE into AUM or AB just to do this. I'd say 99% of my other synth apps have a background audio setting. Even the older ones. DAONE is one of the rare ones that doesn't have a background audio setting.
amazing. Thanks
+1 for AUv3
Could you load this as an effect in AB or AUM, make a source sound like it's behind the listener to the left. Record that track in AUM/AB/AS. Then record other sound sources, but virtually placed in other locations in the room. Then mix the tracks together to give the sonic illusion of VR space with various sources sounding like they're emanating from various specific locations in the room?
@skiphunt Just recorded three different vocals into blocs and moving the source and listener in VRP. Seems to work great.
Agree with all above ++AU
"Binaural" never works for me. It's all strictly a straight audio line from one side of the headphones to the other, never in front or back.
Yes, I hear multi-directional sound in the real world.
Thanks for the feedback.
Someone on fb said that the free version of this doesn't show up as an IAA in AUM. If you have AUM, can you confirm whether the paid version shows up and works as an effect in AUM?
Would like to try this as an AU. Free version instantly crashes for me.
Yes Pro version shows as an IAA Effect in AUM. You must scroll down past the general IAA Effects and it is listed under MNSP apps as VirtualRoom Pro EFFECT.
Thanks for the feedback. I'll add that with the next version.
Even the Virtual Barbershop demo doesn't work for you? Maybe the most common HRTFs don't work well for you, or you pay attention a lot to head movements (which would mean binaural audio with head tracking would work for you)
Great. Thanks!
And regarding your new binaural app, could you please share your tentative roadmap of where you'd like to take this app with your next update or two?
Oops. But don't worry, the free version is based on pretty old code, I just added the new rendering algorithm to it. The Pro version on the other hand is a clean sheet design using the latest APIs, so it should be a lot more stable.
Cool, nice to hear that. :-)
My goal is to make VirtualRoom Pro a simple yet useful binaural rendering app. It should get AB3, possibly AUv3, and more inputs. Some sort of parameter automatization should come too, as well as different rooms / reverb presets.
However, I am currently also working on the actual 3DVERB plugin. This will be a high-end reverb plugin with plenty of controls (which VirtualRoom will not get) and some really cool features (besides the possibility to place sources in 3D space). But that will primarily be a desktop thing and in case I release it also for iOS it will be in an entirely different price category.
Very interesting and a steal at the price. I was going to enquire about the option of having different acoustic spaces, but it looks like you're working on that.
Binaural test that I made a few years ago:
But if you look at the title frame, I suggest trying a twist. If you have speakers either side of a monitor, try rotating each outward so they point left-right, which now forms a dipole. It isn't perfect, but at normal monitor viewing distance you do get a surprisingly effective binaural effect, in speakers alone!
Interesting. I bought the app since i like to create binaural sounds. Indeed the free version works just fine for me on iPhone 6S plus. The algorithm works really good. Would really like to have that for larger rooms and halls etc.
Even more interested in the 3DVERB. I hope you consider it for iOS because there i need some more high quality reverbs and other spatial effects.
Then i hope some day for "real" surround sound support in iOS since i need it sometimes and can´t do anything in iOS here yet.
Very nice app so far!
Curious what an actual binaural recording would sound like through VR Pro.
