    Yes, I know. But I like to midi control/play other synths with apps like TC-Data or AC Sabre. Not recording, just playing. And, I don't like having to load DAONE into AUM or AB just to do this. I'd say 99% of my other synth apps have a background audio setting. Even the older ones. DAONE is one of the rare ones that doesn't have a background audio setting.

    And regarding your new binaural app, could you please share your tentative roadmap of where you'd like to take this app with your next update or two?

    My goal is to make VirtualRoom Pro a simple yet useful binaural rendering app. It should get AB3, possibly AUv3, and more inputs. Some sort of parameter automatization should come too, as well as different rooms / reverb presets.

    However, I am currently also working on the actual 3DVERB plugin. This will be a high-end reverb plugin with plenty of controls (which VirtualRoom will not get) and some really cool features (besides the possibility to place sources in 3D space). But that will primarily be a desktop thing and in case I release it also for iOS it will be in an entirely different price category.

    Interesting. I bought the app since i like to create binaural sounds. Indeed the free version works just fine for me on iPhone 6S plus. The algorithm works really good. Would really like to have that for larger rooms and halls etc.
    Even more interested in the 3DVERB. I hope you consider it for iOS because there i need some more high quality reverbs and other spatial effects.
    Then i hope some day for "real" surround sound support in iOS since i need it sometimes and can´t do anything in iOS here yet.

    Curious what an actual binaural recording would sound like through VR Pro.

    Of course a real binaural recording is another thing as a thing processed trough a spatial effect. And real surround sound is of course another thing. Cinema anyone?

    So it does multichannel over lightning.
    It just hasn't been implemented in any audio software ...
    It does 7.1 (8 channels) and max 48 kHz

    Assuming your headphones work fine and are generally suitable for binaural audio (avoid headphones that are too big, they create rather uncontrollable peaks and notches in the transfer function - in ear and on-the-ear headphones should work fine), it seems that the HRTFs are not working well for you. HRTFs vary from person to person, so if the HRTFs I've implemented in the app don't match yours, it is very well possible that you hear front/back as a slight up/down or down/up movement.

    HRTF individualization is of course a topic I'll need to address at some point, but the first step will probably be to simply offer a choice between a couple of different HRTFs in the app.

  • it's a lovely thing and brings an important missing ingredient to ios. very useful for me anyways..
    Problem is it doesn't actually render the binaural info if you use it in cubase and then freeze the track. i haven't tried a full mixdown yet.. but until it is an Au plug in it needs to freeze correctly to use it in multichannels. It does work fine moving stuff around and making a live recording in Audioshare..
    so... in my opinion it needs
    1) automation of the speaker or dummy head path or both.
    2) IAA freeze fixing.

    but thanks for bringing this out Fritz, and at such a 'no brainer' price.

  • Tried the free one with Sony 7506 & Sennheiser 580 cans. Didn't really hear much Foreground/Background illusion. Mostly just left/right/center with varying degrees of distance emulated with some reverb. Is there a trick to creating more front/back illusion?

    Moved the virtual head around, and come automation will be sweet, but still not quite getting front/back so much.

    The effect is more noticeable when speaker is closer in front and further in back.

  • Front / back localisation was always considered to be problematic when I was researching spatial audio - our visual cues being predominant in this area. It was considered to be an evolutionary thing considering our ear placement.

    Anyway, back on topic, will try this out in Cubasis and will try it (out of interest) with some binaural recordings.

    Clips? The free one just has builtin sounds to move around. That's all I'm listening to.

    If I move a sound all the way center front, the furthest you can place it, then move it behind the virtual head as far as you can, it doesn't really sound any different. Just sounds like center, and maybe some distance.

    I'm just not sure how this sounds like any more spatial illusion than just using L/R balance with varying degrees of reverb to emulate distance.

    Maybe the paid "Pro" version does a better job with forward/backward Virtual illusion? Anyone compared the two?

    Please share your findings pairing this with actual binaural recordings. Very interested in what it does to the illusion.

    Unless I'm missing something, you can only try out the sample demo clips in the free version, not your own.

    If I've got that wrong, how do you try out the free version with your own recordings?

But the HRTFs (or HRIRs if you prefer this term) are the same. Regarding the headphones: try once using the in-ear ones that came with the iOS device you're using. They might be better for binaural audio that the big Sony or Sennheiser ones you mentioned. But I'd expect only a slight improvement, no miracles...

    For me it sounds O.K. with my AKG 702 but when i f.e. compare it to the binaural panning in Logic i hear a bigger different in front and back. I hear much more high frequencies if it´s in front of me and it sounds more canned/dull and with less high frequencies when it´s "behind" me which comes closer to reality for me.
    With the app it´s a lot harder to say if the sounds comes from the front or behind me if i close my eyes.
    At the end it´s just cheating our brain anyway :)
    I´m dreaming of multi band multichannel FX everywhere some day ;)
    The 3DVerb sounds very good i think and has a lot potential.

    There are a lot of good examples of binaural recordings on you-tube. It´s really another dimension and i wish all music will be recorded this way. You can´t really do it this good with effects after recording.
    In some years me might have a clever combination of this. Then i could imagine we put on VR glasses and headphones and we seeing and hearing it like we are really there while we also can moving around in a concert or any fantasy place.
    Simple stereo is yesterday! :D

    I tried with a binaural recording and it wasn't entirely successful - but I imagine the App wasn't designed for that kind of scenario.

    Interesting app. What type of music would benefit most with this kind of app?

    Also would this app simulate a virtual studio room for monitoring or is there already an app for that?
