Don't set your hearts on playing Upright Bass. Seriously..

After my brief encounter with lead guitar (i.e. I'm not sure it's for me), I still want to try Bass Guitar, fretless at that! I love that fretless sound!

Do it! Fretless bass is class. It's what I make 90% of my income with. My fretless basses are lovely .. and were much more affordable!

If you was to recommend a new fretless bass around the £800 mark, which ones would you look at?

  • Hey as an Audiobus 3 tie in I posted a fretless bass video using iOS stuff for a different track last night (with this same guy) on Facebook video:
    https://www.facebook.com/oscarsouthbass/videos/1656262581066857/

I'm actually using Audiobus 2 there of course.. this was before Link even existed! Time moves fast!

Yamaha TRB line or Fender Jazz.

Very different but both amazing instruments. I only play Yamaha TRB, Fender or Status instruments these days. They all have their own voice. If you can pick up a Status for the price (have to be second hand) then grab that. Legendary instruments.

I managed to get one for under £400 by buying at an auction and having a family friend who's a violin maker fix it up for cheap. That instrument's returned a hell of a lot more than it's value to me, but I don't expect to be able to get anything better (it sounds nice but is a bag of shite to play) inside the next decade...

Most famous Status players off the top of my head are Mark King and the guy from Muse. Boutique British company and imo the best electric basses existing on this earth. I'm holding one as I type this!

Well looking at the prices, I doubt Status will ever be within my price bracket for something of a reasonable age lol

Have a look out for the Status Energy line if you're interested in them. Can pick em up for less than £600 if you catch one second hand.

Got your budget though, you should be able to get a nice new Fender or Yamaha TRB, and either will be an amazing instrument. Yamaha = hifi, Fender = lofi (each in the best possible way).

Sound wise I tend towards preferring that low end buttery smooth sound over out and out punch in a Bass sound. Would that probably lean me towards the Fender? Obviously amp and cab or what I put the bass through software wise will have an impact too.

  • Ps everyone. Sorry went off topic in a big way here lol

Pick up a Fender. Have a play on both a Jazz and P and see which you prefer. Jazz is a bit more versatile and possibly slightly better for playing melodic lines, while a P bass just melts into anything. They feel slightly different to play too. If you can't decide then get a P bass with P/J pickup config.

Get a Markbass Black Line head. You won't find a better sounding head for the money and it's sooo small!! (although TC Electronic make a credible alternative).

Any decent 2x10 cab will do the job. I recommend Eden Nemesis for quality/size/price balance. Hook it up with a decent speakon cable. If you want to be louder then add an extra 1x15. Baaaassss!!!!

I also (optionally) recommend picking up a Sansamp Bass Driver DI. If you're just recording and have good monitors then you could save yourself some cash and just get the DI, not bother with head/cab. Your recordings will sound better..! 95% of the time you'll sound better DI'ing with a Sansamp than using your own rig.

Brother, of all the jack of all trades/one man band instruments a lot of us play I love bass. I will never be a Jaco or Victor Wooten but I love the instrument and it's potential to transform a chord progression into something entirely new & or unexpected.

I also love the fact it has fat strings, as my caveman fingers find it easier to hit where my brain wants them to! Lol
