STEPS

Waiting impatiently for a post here but figured I can just make one. I'm not on the reachable or rotor boat boat but figured I'd try this out since I'm a sucker for polyrhythms. Not sure how I feel about this one. The only good thing I've gotten out of it is by using ReSlice and that was mainly because of Virsyns heavenly Arp.

  • Is it iPhone only?

  • This intruiges me greatly. Ableton link baked in and midi out. For 1$ ?

It's iPhone. Looks fine on an iPad though.

  • Does anyone know if Rotor has midi out for it's built-in midi sequencers? I don't think it does, but if it does... what does this stand-alone bring to the party beyond what you can already do in Rotor?

Again, I don't think Rotor has midi out. All of the midi references within the app say Rotor In, but in Redshrike it shows up as Rotor Out.

I think it just sends clock out, but they might add midi out later maybe.
Yeah wondering whether it's the Rotor midi sequencer or something more...

  • Looks like it iphone optimized, looks good on ipad though

  • Love the GUI. Been wanting something dead simple, but capable like this. Thanks for the heads up

I figured it was something similar, but I just tried the Rotor sequencer on the iphone. It's good and useful, but since it doesn't go full screen, it's kinda small for the iPhone. This one looks like a good iphone size. I don't really have an easy sequencer for the smaller screen. I've got an SE now.

It's only a dollar and looks like it fits the bill for an easy to use sequencer designed specifically for a smaller screen. Was just trying to make sure it wasn't redundant with what I already have. I use Aleph for sequencing too, but it's a bit fiddly on the smaller screen as well.

Thanks, think I will buy as it does look decent for an iphone sequencer. Worth a shot. :)
.....although no landscape mode might be a bit annoying using it on ipad.

I did beta on this, found it to be a very fluid live tool

  • Wow this thing is a little beast!!!
Had it sending all kinds of data to ODYSSEi and Model 15 for bass and wow blew my ears off!! In a good way :D

Can Caustic's sequencer be used for midi out to other synths? If so, how would it compare to Steps?

Caustic doesn't do midi out and I don't really think they're comparable. Caustic has a piano roll you can program or record into. Steps has dials and such where you choose gate length, etc, that type of thing. I've only had just a quick poke around in it.

Caustic is midi in only unfortunately

  • awesome. I'm a sucker for sequencer arpegiators. so for a buck, i took a chance. This thing is great. It's a quick question way to get some cool rythms going. it has a different way of thinking about programming arpegiators which is awesome, because i don't get in to old routines of programming. after about a minute o had a cool rhythm going that i would have never had come up.
If the devs are here, 2 suggestions. 1.make it audiobus 3 compatible. i'd love to put this i front of some midi fx.
    2. please make the velocity and gate programmable per step.
    3. other than that, it's freakin sweet!

  • Please Audiobus 3 compatible for many instances !

  • Scales would be nice too and make sense. But I'm not complaining, it's already super easy breezy. Velocity/gat per note definitely though

  • very very useful on small screen iPhone :D

  • Is it polyphonic/multi track?

  • You can change presets on the fly! So programs stuff and switch in realtimebto get creative!

nope. caustic is a closed box. it can export midi into modstep though.

well. it works fine with the mf adapter. so you don't need to wait for the devs to make it compatible.

  • The description says it automatically sends on all midi ports, can you select what goes to what ports/channels ?
    And like @monzopro asks...is it poly/multi Track?

Yeah be good to know. I've read the .pdf and it doesn't really help if you don't already have the app

sadly its a single track. but yes you can choose where to send to. it works beautifully with my volcas though. since it sends both midi over usb/irig and a sync pulse via the headphone jack.

  • edited April 2017

I saw all the Mf adapter ins and outs but would love to put it in he AB3 pipes as separate instances. I think it sends same data on all ports but might be wrong cause Model 15 and Oddy sounded different!

Thx. Just making sure I don't have anything else that's redundant for sequencing via iPhone that's got a comfy GUI for the smaller screen.

The Rotor folks are being a bit cagey about possible coming midi out in Rotor. Just had another play with the Rotor sequencers on the iPhone and they're a bit small within the modules that don't expand to full screen.

Think I'll nab this one for a buck :)
