Thanks, @gmslayton!
Thanks for the vid. I appreciate it
@gmslayton Definitely elucidated a thing or two here. Sometimes things are so simple I don't understand them
Or maybe I understand them too quickly and miss out on a thing or two, which was def. the case here. Brilliant value for 99 cents on the dollar. You also nudged me by running iM1 in the background. I always tend to use Module, but iM1 has a lot more 'types' to choose from and I will follow your lead (or bass
) from here on out....
Just updated with AB3 midi
Oh, alright then. Take my $1. I really don't think this app is for me, (seems like an overly clicky proof of concept) but let's see.
Nice. I think it's a ninety nine cents of pretty.
Brilliant.
Sorry, very slightly off-topic question: how did you record MIDI onto a single channel in Gadget, and how did you queue it up to record at the start?
I haven't got steps but tried this with ChordFlow and it recorded over everything, and didn't sync from the start...
I'm longing for randomisation options
@MonzoPro not all Ableton link integrations are created equal. STEPS is pretty spot on while ChordFlow required some offset tweaking and good timing on the users part as well.
Also make sure you set the loop in ChordFlow to stop after the phrase or section so it doesn't start duplicating the recording. Unless your into that kind of duplicate midi notes. Then by all means let it loop.
Ah good tips - thanks! Think I might have to get STEPS...
Looks like that is fixed in version 1.1
If you have the AB3 Randomization MIDI filter, you can now pipe STEPS through that to get some randomization.
i think this AB3 midi update is a good thing for Steps. I was a bit frustrated with the limitations of steps but now you can add midi filters and scales it's much better for me. Still want landscape/ipad version though.
Considering this, STEPS is a good example of how sequencer Audio Units would be useful.
I kind of agreed on the case against these kinds of apps before, but AB3 validates the case for their existence.
@OscarSouth that sounds really interesting. I so need to get AB3 and start experimenting with it.
Most definitely a landscape painter over here...
Definitely a good thing. And step poly arp as a filter also helps. I may be an outlier, but I'm a fan of the iPhone specific portrait UX (I think this sort of thing is perfect for the on-the-go workflow). But I find the sub-steps too limiting--not being able to control the pitch within each of the eight steps makes it really repetitive sounding. And no slides...
I've actually been having by far the most fun using it for drum patterns into Ruismaker.
Having some fun sending the midi from STEPS into ScaleGen then from ScaleGen into my Korg Triton. Scalegen translates whatever STEPS is sending to a particular key. Loads of fun with some Bass.
I'm sure it's simple but would you mind explaining how please? I cannot get Steps to output to Ruis FM hosted in AUM.
In AUM I'd just do it directly by core midi. You can just choose STEPS virtual output inside AUM.
I'd recommend Audiobus 3 midi though. It's flawless!
Are you just feeling around for the mapping? I got it setup easily in AB3 but it isn't hitting all of the pads.
Yeah I just spent a few minutes figuring it out. You can shift the key in order to get the drums to a location you prefer.
You could use MIDIFlow Scale Lock set to black keys only to make it easier, but it's not necessary
I love this thing. I've recorded a couple of late-70s Kraut-style tracks with it just by manipulating the gates live every now and then to spice things up. It's great to be limited by something sometimes, instead of it opening up too many doors.
Would you be willing to share? I'd love to hear how you're working with the app. Very interesting input mechanism!
Sure, here's a quickie I just did. About to expand it and work on it. I get a little finicky towards the end with it, just to demonstrate the rhythm changes. Synth is Animoog.
I like that, it's got a bit of an Ashra Tempel vibe. I should really get this app.
@oat_phipps I really like that. Given me some inspiration! Cheers!
Haha thanks, I'll give you 3 guesses who the 'MG' in the title stands for.
Another great part about it is you can switch user saved sequences seamlessly. You have to go to load and press on the '1' beat naturally, but there's no lag.
