About halfway through he gets a sound I can only describe as a 1970's Gong album, which is one of my favourite things.

Very fair price too, if I hadn't spent all my money on Komplete, and a bit more i don't have I'd be snapping this up.

    Ditto! :)
    Instabuy
    :)

One of my favourite devs, and it sounds as good as a desktop synth.

    Damn.

By no means riffing on your pain (and after all, you have new toys to play with), but I nabbed this very late last night and starting noodling and yeah it's lovely, but my first thought was, yup, @MonzoPro ....

I know, it's got my name written all over it - even the price is right.

I've spent the last few days up to my ears in Komplete otherworldliness.....mostly in the company of Form and Reaktor. Reaktor alone comes with hundreds of presets: synths, samplers, sequencers and whatnot, and there's more available for free to download. I'm kompletely blown away by it all, and the fact it works in Logic - so I can whack on a bit of guitar or vocals, or even an Alchemy synth if I feel the urge, has kept me more than entertained.

But. I'll still be using the old iPad to start stuff off on occasion, and this is exactly the sort of app I'd want to use.

I'd still like to hear more variation - most of the examples in the three vids sound samey (calling redskylullabye...), but I might be checking the back of the sofa for loose change later tonight...

It´s not as powerful as Reaktor of course but as i own also this now and Reaktor and having a focus on soundcapes and ambient i can say that i really love it after the short time.
Of course it needs some days to explore and see what i can do with it.
This with MPE played via a Seaboard would be fun for sure. The keyboard looks almost like a Haaken Continuum :)

Does Igor have an e-mail address? All I can see on the crowded support page is fucking Facebook.

Sweet, if I didn't have a commute / daily couch recovery then Komplete / PC Daw would pretty much be the works for me and the quality of the end results would actually be better for it. It is staggering to explore that world. Looking forward to hearing your gaseous endeavors.

I love the immediacy of the iPad, but recently it's been a pretty unproductive experience for me - crashes, freezes, lost recordings (AUM), continual rotation bugs...I've recorded almost nothing at all over the last few months so I needed to reboot my brain. Loving the Logic/Komplete combo, but getting burnt knees from an overheating laptop.

I'd have bought this in the blink of an eye if I hadn't bought Komplete, but seems a bit daft considering I've hardly started exploring that one yet. I could still be swayed by some whacky demos though.

Well, Synthscaper indeed reminds me of some of the great obscure soundscape tools from Reaktor.
I also will route SynthScaper trough my favorite FX tools (Kaleidoscope, B2, Replika XT) to give it a lot more depth, intense and the immersive feel i love.
And hell, my macbook pro heating up my lap too.
    But it's nice in winter.

I have been using Samplitude on my PC more, for editing, FX (Stutter Edit/Looperator), overdubs and mixing etc. polishing off some originally iOS/Circuit tracks from the past year or so. Just being able to load a project with all the settings of ANY given plugin intact, tons of automation options, even the midi wiring just... working... sigh... at least it is a template for where iOS needs to get to.

I mostly snagged it because of the always pressure-y 'intro price' and wishing I grabbed Layr at that stage. I just think it will go really well as a nice backdrop to the BM3 beats/sample shards I plan to be making. I still want to crack the whole '80% on iOS, 20% on PC' paradigm that eludes the $%#@ out of me.

After many months of not buying any iOS apps i started to buy a few again because of the euphoric and praise they got (like Mood, DRC, Eos 2, Audiobus 3, RippleMaker, TF8 and a few others).
I must say that i´m not to euphoric about these (they are good but not outstanding or something really new for me...beside TF8 maybe) buys i did but Synthscaper is maybe the best iOS buy i did in a long time.
It´s the stuff i would do with Mitosynth but Synthscaper is maybe my new favorite (iOS) soundscape playground.
Of course i miss a few things but i try to be happy with a version 1.0 so far.
The bad or good thing (depending), Synthscaper replace most of his other apps for me.
    It´s more a really nice little synth-experiment-workstation.
My app of the year so far.

Surprised to hear that TF8 is your favorite out of that list of recent purchases...all of those except TF8 would be my favorites of the year list. Initially I liked it a lot, but the saws sound kinda wimpy to me. It could use a full iPad treatment as well. Dev nailed the reverb and reverse delay effects though.

I'm a sucker for good and lush huge reverbs and nice strings patches and TF8 is the best here i heard yet from all iOS synths (including all reverb FX apps). But of course it's just a matter of taste and what you like to achieve.
While TF8 is nearly as good like some of my desktop synths for some specific sounds i can't say that from the other tools.
But just a personal thing. I'm happy to donate some bucks to the hard working developers and will get my use out of these tools for sure.
So the AK-1 synth with Sean Costello reverb could please me maybe too :)

  • TF8 is my app of the year so far, I think. Combo of its very performable chiclet key rows and gorgeous sound.

    It is beautiful.

I kind of needed this and didnt know it.

It is a great "glue" for the glitch and skitzo electro plunderphonic mess that I do.

Yes, it is a beauty indeed :)

Did you get MIDI in to work?

I couldn't connect anything except a WIFI MIDI SEWENCER from iPad#2.

Launchkey/Launchpad Pro/LIVID MINIM all did not connect for me.

Maybe I am not getting the color of enabled vs not.

Yes midi in works great in AB3 but I did have to restart Synthscaper once when it wasn't receiving midi. It's working fine in AUM too for me. it's an IAA instrument so easy to set up in a host.

    You are right.

I was using right after purchase.

    BUT I AM IN AB2.

Only using AB3 for beta work and on phone.

A few of the scenes in the 'instruments' section of the presets seem really buggy to me.

Can someone try going to the New For Old scene (it's in the instruments section), mute number 2 (the only one producing sound, as indicated by the zappy waveform coming out of the line when you hit a key), go to number 1 instead, and then try to load something into Oscillator 1 or 3 and make it play (check that oscillator 2 is muted so it doesn't play). All you will hear is silence. I can't make anything play in that preset which isn't in Oscillator 2, and there's no indication on the left hand dial that any sound is being produced in oscillators 1 or 3. In that same dial, you will see that stuff is happening in Oscillator 2 when you hit a key (unmute it to hear the sound)

Maybe I'm missing something fundamental, but the keyboard just won't trigger anything on Oscillator 1 or 3 in the New For Old scene or several others in the instrument section of the presets. Either I'm misunderstanding something in the app, or the instrument section of the presets is massively bugged.

This is driving me crazy, so could someone else follow the steps I've outlined above and see what happens?

(Actually, it seems that in any oscillator in any scene where there is currently no sound happening when you hit a key - as indicated by the dial in the oscillator display - there is no way to load a sample in and make it sound. The key is to watch the dial to see if anything's happening. I feel like I must be missing something here!)

EDIT: The init preset 'Empty scene' works as I would expect (i.e. load a new sample into a blank layer and the keyboard triggers it immediately with accompanying dial graphic), so this must be a pretty major bug with the other presets. Surely.

    To summarise my findings:

    1. You can load samples into any oscillator in any cell in the Empty Scene init preset and they will produce sound correctly when you hit a key.

    2. With the other presets, Oscillator 2 seems to work just fine in every cell, in terms of being able to replace the sample with another sample and hearing the sound.

    3. However, if there is no sound currently loaded into Oscillator 1 or 3 and therefore nothing appearing in the sound dial, then loading a sample will not produce any sound. This happens on most presets, but the easiest examples to see it on are the instrument presets, for example the New For Old preset.

EDIT 2: My issue is answered below and has to do with the right keyboard settings on the scenes/oscillators in question not being applied for the keys to trigger sounds.

Go to keyboard settings. The Active Keyboard for the "missing" sounds is turned off. Looks like Screen Main has to be on and it's not for those voices. Tap the Kb button below the Arp button on the left. This synth will take a little manual readin'

  • There is definitely a learning curve on this bad boy

While I learn I can pleasure myself with LayR.................................

  • Yep It's working ok but took me a while to figure it out!
To add to the above, on oscillator 3 the keyboard voice range is set to off.
That's why it's a good idea to start from an init patch when making your own patches.

I'm hoping for some midi control over the movement of oscillators and stuff like that next. There's midi control but not for oscillator movement. There is a midi control of x and y pad parameter listed but has anyone found the x/y pad?

People just using the presets so far?
    A preset player?

    Too complicated

Yup they put me off. I own all of his apps and still bought this one! Cause the sound and ideas.
But the UIs are a horrible match for me. Windows and small buttons n switches and little visual feedback and....ugh disappointing
They are all a UI overhaul away from being among the very best music apps in the store.

Yep, would be nice if it had alternate colour options too. The interface does have a certain charm about it in an old school Russian hardware kind of way but I agree they are the weakest thing in his apps.

Actually the appearance is what first attracted me to the apps. But then quickly grew to dislike using them with the file menu and the windows and the menus over menus etc.
