  • To be honest I wouldn't mind having an OP 1 if I had 900 dollars to blow (i don't). Looks like one of those things that is limited in exactly th right ways

  • Later bro.

I definely understand that viewpoint... I personally like having a balance between iOS apps and Hardware and guitar gear. Get it all running, syncing and looping together and I'm a happy camper. My Launchpad Pros are my current focus, but there is something to be said about touch screen type apps like geoshred, samplr and ifretless that I always keep coming back to because they are so unique in their own ways. I will say my discovery of iOS music making has helped me creatively in so many ways. However my APPdiction sometimes keeps me from practicing my first love... the guitar. Which is not that good for me being that most of my gigs are solo guitar one man band stuff. (that finds my electro stuff creeping into the mix ) My DJ gigs are not as frequent but I spend more time with my iPads then my guitar these days.
As for BM3...i hear you. It's got some issues but is very powerful. But I find myself really just enjoying it's sampler, and I don't see me using it for anything other than that for now...

I still use some features in Logic, like the drummer, but even that's covered now on iOS.

I'm not on Logic, do you mean that auto drums feature, what iOS app does that?

  • I use Bitwig 2 as my central hub. It's great for bringing everything together, including external midi and CV based gear and being able to modulate multiple Internal/VST/AU/CV parameters via drag drop.

Bitwig can also run on hardware like the Surface Pro for full touch experience alongside iOS.

I think Mac will get to the point of being able to drag drop control for iOS as well...so AU exposes all the parameters and drag the Bitwig modulators onto them (instead of midi learn)

I'm not going to spend any time mapping midi within iOS, that's done inside Bitwig with a big monitor and potentially a device like the Kontrol Master from Touch Innovations.

So iOS for me is sound module/helper that can also help to navigate the depths of DAW's with an app like Metagrid.

I want everything networked over CAT6, so I use CopperLan for Midi and Dante Via for Audio.

Drummer in Logic is almost like hiring a human one, maybe better. :) Give it a song structure and it plays to the arrangement. You can practically tell it what to play, to follow the bass, how complex the patterns and fills, where to play fills... tweak to get pretty much what you want. Bounce to MIDI and edit the pattern if you can't get just what you need---a piano roll with deep MIDI editing capabilities. Pick from many fine kits with full control over the mix of each individual part. GarageBand on iOS borrows from the idea of Logic Drummer, but with much less fine control.

Garageband, I'll have re-install and check that out. I wonder if it's better than the one in the 'Memos' app which doesn't recognize say A=432 for the bass and doesn't do a great job on the drums either.

I have a friend with Logic...gonna be pestering him I think

Sadly there is nothing like Logic's drummer (which gots another big update too).
On iOS DrumJam is still my favorite. I like the bedlam feature. It's also one of the few apps with not only good drums but also percussions which i miss in many drum apps.
It's fun to use DrumJam as midi controller for plug-ins as well.
But also Logic's ultrabeat is an insane good drum machine.

DrumJam is excellent, sequencing it from another app, with bedlam engaged, gives you an endlessly changing pattern, really hypnotic.

Personally for me ,ios has been a lifesaver, especially today in that instead of coming to terms that I've had almost no substantial musical ideas as of late, I could always go back to mentally pouring sand out of one cup and into another vis a vis comparing ios musicmaking with other mediums. Hmmm... to try to compose something or go to another thread?
    "To BM3
    or to NOT BM3
    THAT is the question ..

The iPad is an amazing piece of technology especially for making music but Apple make it so restricted. I would like it if there was better file management on iOS like what there is on Mac OS, Linux and Windows.

I recently bought a Surface Pro 3 and stuck Reason 9.5 on it and surprisingly the pen works well with Reason. My 2012 MacBook Pro 13inch is another amazing piece of kit and I recently installed a SD card and 16 GB of ram on it and it works great.

However, I am getting addicted to BM3 and I think it's a great DAW for iPad. It is just a pity there are bugs but to be fair the developer has been fanstatic at fixing them.

I'm still searching for the right stand alone digital multi-track machine. Like the ones @theconnactic called awful crap. :)

    I find them liberating.

Had the BR-800, so much functionality in that package, really great standalone recorder.

  • @MonzoPro I know I have told you about how easy it was to upgrade my 2008 MacBook Pro and the result being like a new laptop. But go to crucial.com and dial in the upgrades for your model and I think they have visual guides on the steps involved. It really is an easy upgrade and completely worth it for having a perfectly good computer again.

Yes, another really great thing Apple removed.
Everything glued, hard to replace or upgrade anything, removing of the line in heaphone jack and a lot other things. The only thing i have no problem with is the usb-c ports (and i even like the touch bar) since i already use extern SSD like the Samsung T3 which has usb-c connection.
I tryed to go with windows 10 but i still like macOS much more and the apple track pads are just the best in class by a country mile. They even are usable as multi-touch gesture input for some midi tools and awesome for fine editing. Plus force touch and a really large one (which i really like too) on newer devices.
Why can't Apple offer support for the magic force touch track pad for iOS or also much better integration for the pencil.
That would make iOS A LOT more useful. I'm going crazy often when i edit things inside iOS. Very unaccurate and with apps like Korg Odyssei no fun at all.
I'm sure these things will evolve and iOS will be more and more like a small macOS.
But another thing i never would like to give up is that i have the choice from where i install my software and i also can resell most of my licenses (beside the things i bought via mac app store) or trade them for something else.
The iOS app store is nice too and iOS offer easy install and deinstalling from apps but i won't stay in that cage as the only option.

Yeah I'll have another look. It's been easy to put off as I just use it for basic work admin, but now I'm using it for Logic I'm really noticing it's struggling. Bit skint and pushed for time at the moment, but it's cheaper than buying a new one so I'll get there eventually.

I was listening to the Moana soundtrack and the demos definitely utilized Garageband. Whether on a Mac or iOS, I don't know.

I've moved back to hardware for all my sound sources. Mostly just because there are too many options to distract on iOS, so it's nice to have some real world limitations. But everything still gets recorded to the iPad.

That's cool to know about moana, i have heard it way too much so the tunes are ever present in my brain. My kids are addicted to the damn movie. Will look up more info.

Ios synths sound great but i feel too disconnected for playing and making patches on synths. So lately i'm just recording hardware into auria. But for pianos and ep's and orchestra i do prefer my ios choices.

  • I simply have been coercing my ipad to work as an all in one solution because reverting back to hardware isn't an option for me (money, time, space). I'm still not there yet with ios. But i'm determined to make it work. The lego analogy work flow with ios is so absurd in my case. I bought BM3 for the sole purpose of simply recording IAA and AUs using other midi triggering apps. I then bounce and import to Auria Pro. It's still too early for me to know if BM3 will work. Every other midi sequencer has some sort of bug or limitation which makes it unusable for me. This includes Auria Pro, Modstep, Genome, and Infinite Looper. Midisteps is the only one that works for my use, but I don't always want to record sh101 fashion.

mono analogue (can't go wrong with a bass station 2) and poly stuff on the pad makes for a good setup.

I've been liking that setup- an analog monosynth with lots of knobs, and perhaps no presets, goes very well with the ipad for polysynths with presets. You can't beat the ipad for variety.

It would be cool to use the analog synth, if it has midi out, as the midi controller for ipad. Like a cheap Juno 106, could be a great ipad companion.

  • @Processaurus juno 106 aren't so cheap to come by! speaking of 106's tho, i'd really like a deepmind 6 for some analogue in my setup. but i'll settle for my electribe and ipad for the mo. i need to master bm3 and get a synth app i can click with. all's good :)

I bought bm3 and returned it the same day. The first app ive ever gotten a refund for. For what i need, bm2 mixed with other apps is sufficent. I expected the user interface to be better for bm3 too. Ive been pretty tempted to build my hardware setup too. more stable.

So much are we different. I find BM3 User interface to be one of the best I have seen for years.
