Always the straggler, but I show up every month, just...
Take, from me
I want you to agree
That when, as friends
We'll get there in the end
You know it's up to me,
with my checkered history
You hope to reconcile
But I'm deep in denial
Give, again
A circle without end
And when, as friends
I drive you round the bend
You know it's up to me
That's why it's not to be
I always fuck around
I always let you down
@DefRobot Talk about journeys. Was the very first noise a Space Hopper inflating? In your own musical way, you've welcomed me aboard the '70's bus with ciggy stubbers for a trip. The Sweet, Glam, Pub Rock, and then (at 1.09) a chorus that's nailed to the 'Friggin in the Rigging' mast in its sing-along-ability. But wait, is there one foot over the '80's fence and a guitar tone that The Cure should've used (love that section). Took me to Skol lager, hazy heads, and 'A Forest.'
And all in Auria, which in itself entitles you to 6 free goes around the Crystal Maze or The Krypton Factor. Your choice. Both easier. I hear so much confidence in these vocals, letting go/giving it some where your song asks for it is great to hear. Tidy drum sound running through and possibly more could have been played to accentuate those 'Me' stabs at 0.47.... or opposite them. Catchy, memory stroking tune that I wish I had time to vid review. Reckon there's a Punk somewhere in your musical soul.
Hey man, real nice tune! reminded me of Band of Horses a bit. So, I listened it through a couple times, and then went back skipping between/comparing parts, probably over-analyzing it, but anyway, here goes.. I really like the in-between bits that break up the sections, those are really nice, and effective. I'd say there are two verses, two choruses here, and the verses feel like they have more energy than the choruses, having a busier bass line, and beat, which is atypical, but I think it works on this tune. I don't hear anything change between the first and second verse, or the first and second chorus. It might be cool to remove something from the first ones, or add something to second ones so it catches the listeners attention - "oh, this is new.." Even something subtle like that bell thing in the chorus (which sounds exactly like the bell on my toaster oven, BTW - now I'm hungry!)
If that was only in the second chorus, it might add renewed interest the second time about. the f-bomb there is always good for that too! Nice work, nice tune, bravo!
@moff Hello. Lots of sea around here and if hadn't been cleaning windows at time of listening, The Ocean should be the place to spin your tune. A bucket of water will do. Little time means listening to songs on the job. Happy to have been off the ladder when you smashed the tempo hatch wide open. Dancing down the street like a psychotic Michael Flatley (can hear that feel to it) delayed The Chamois treatment. Riverdance on Rabies. Also drops of Dr Who I hear, spinning me off to a planet with another type of ocean. One that melts lilo's and the skin and bones laying on them. Jaunty number sir. A layer(s) of deep bass underneath the surface could add more 'thump in the guts' but I had a good jig to it as it stands.
@Shaken&Stirred thanks for the thoughtful feedback, and you're quite right that I should have saved some sauce for the second course. I'll try and bear that in mind next time.
Thank you very much @Bluepunk I'm very flattered by your kind words.
No I haven't tried ukulele bass but the other day I was actually watching a couple of reviews of the Kala U-bass. I think I'll save up for one as christmas gift to myself
@Bluepunk the thing that hangs down the ukulele neck is a strap.
Hi @Bluepunk . Cheer for your Fab comment. At the moment I don't have a clue what they are playing here.... TOO BLOODY HOT! I don't to go out mate(Mega busy with cleaning pools that is 40 degrees(& over) Heat here. Then do some Remixing & Finalising a couple of my tracks for a couple of Labels...... Sorry, I hope that didn't sound Bigheadedness......... Apologies, if it did). But what I do hear in Hotels, with there music, it's still Shitty, tasteless EDM music, the same as UK. I'm still listening to U.S. Soulful/Beach House/Garage. Artists, Like Deep Swing/ Masters at Work/Full Intention/Joey Negro, etc....... Or I go back to Jamaican(1980's Volcano Sound System) stuff....... or, Dennis Brown/Mighty Diamonds/Gregory Isaac's(1970 era),etc........ As for writing Dance music mate, all I can say is, do what you feel is good & experiment like Hell........ Pick a type of style(Acid/House/Techno/Hardcore/Deep House, etc........ Most Dance tracks. are normally 4 on the Floor)You make what you feel comfortable with, try & make it not too monotonous. Keep changing the pattern of the track, so the ears & brain don't go Runny. lol. Good thing about Vocal Acapellas, is that they help stop this( monotony). If you make an instrumental track mix, it does nothing too special, but add a decent Vocal, it can change things around dramatically. I look forward to hearing you try to crack one out Geezer.
I liked this Mister Rick. Not convinced about the percussion/drums (maybe more variation? Or maybe just a little loud comparatively?), but I find the melody very restful.
Very professional. Not my bag of donuts, but can appreciate the technical mastery of your subject here...
Love the first line here. Love most of the lines, but always pay particular attention to how we're invited in. What I hate about this tune is that IT REALLY reminds me of someone, but I can't recall them to my weak mind. RHCP certainly, maybe cross-fed with REM.....of course, your timing is excellent (as regards the 'kill us in a hurricane' reference) as I'm listening to this as the rest of Harvey beats at my Texan-window...Interested to see what you do/achieve with BM3
LOVE THIS. And yer t-shirt
So cool (and yer t-shirt). Seriously, love the performance and how casual it is, plates being clattered in the background and kids chattering. As for the little prince who clambers up on you; a beautiful moment captured for posterity. Really nicely done, makes me realize that we spent too much time (sometimes) trying to be too careful/perfect with our music-making and risk losing the feel. Thanks for sharing it. Bob would approve.
I'm def. getting old, much preferred the acoustic/Spanish interlude to the electric thrashing...but it must be said you're lucky to have such a tight band in your own living room
On the video front, you might want to consider incorporating some simple transitions into your cuts, they can seem a little sudden. Just a thought.
I spent a few weeks in Spain recently and they were building a house directly across the street. This reminded me of that or would have if they'd had helicopters bringing in lunch every day and the foreman had been from Vogon
Having said all that....after a few minutes I got comfortable with this drone and even found myself kind of ommming along....side issue: unless you intended something I'm missing (more than possible) I think the common spelling is Anesthetic
Like this Oscar. Nice space/rhythm.
Soundtrack for an (as yet) unmade movie. Just let it run and zoned out somewhat imagining the story. Enjoyed it
Really like the piano sound on this one. And the little vocal type noise that bloops in. What I learned (again) is how you manage to get sparseness into the vocal while still keeping the content going. I really need to learn how to do this better. I like the vibe, but might want another verse/chorus/thing of your choosing, felt that I wanted some resolution (of some kind). Slight feeling that the whole thing might not add up to the sum of its parts etc., but that said the parts are very nice.
I am struggling this month and, truth be told, was -sub rosa- wondering if you'd miss out also......but, damn it, feet held to the fire once again I guess. Have a two hour block tomorrow afternoon before a hellish big boy week, and do have the notion of an idea (as ever), but need to do better than the three or four other times this odd August I've started and got absolutely nowhere. Thank you. I think
Thanks Johnny.......
Thanks for listening!
The spelling and odd syntax is the foggy and groggy result of being anesthetized...or my homage to Slade...I'm not telling...
Thanks for listening. The song is nothing special and certainly destined for the "discard" pile, because the vocal melody isn't up to much. The weird vocal sounds in between the singing are my first forays into sampling and sound design, they're sourced from vocal samples and the one after the first chorus is taken from Jussi but then fucked up in BM3. I think I might be onto something with this, there seems to be a world of possibilities to explore there. The piano sound is the Salamander Grand in Auria run through PSP Chorus.
Gotta show up, even with shit. Even producing a mediocre song helps to get one more mediocre song out of the way. And there's always something in there you can re-use later.

@OscarSouth Great atmospheric sound here. Lovely piece. The very well chosen sounds jump out of the mix very well, especially the booming drum sound.
@Retzilience Had to turn the intro right down, as it nearly did my eardrums!
Quite a jazzy feel to it all, with no obvious structure. Was that the intention? Interesting bits in here, but could have done with a trim length wise.
@theconnactic Thanks for the kind words! I'll give Montreal a listen
@Bluepunk Thanks for the in depth listen and critique! Always a good read.
My musical journey started in my teens when I was a goth/punk.
80's totally shaped my taste in music and I think your first musical loves stick with you.
@richardyot Your songs and sounds have a recognisable consistency. A genre all of your own. Always a great laid back vibe to your songs and well spaced out in the mix.
Didn't recognise a verse/chorus/verse/chorus structure, more like a piece that just rolls along with a melancholic vibe. I like the soft drums in here, what did you use?
Thanks for the listen - the drums are just loops from the BeatHawk Tri-Hop pack. Drums are the one area where I'm lazy, I write and perform everything else from scratch, but for drums I use loops, or the Luis Martinez apps or the GB Drummer.
Only a small confirmation, but that little vocal sound was very arresting (in a good way) and a definite addition..
Thanks, @JohnnyGoodyear. I'm not quite sure the drums were the way I wanted, either, but I'm not dissatisfied. It seems the clear vision gets muddier the longer you mix.
Thanks for the feedback.
@richardyot, I don't know that I'd say that should go to the discard pile. I quite enjoyed it. The intro was arresting. I love the swells after the first verse. The vocals sounded great, very fat and lush. It had a very good groove. The mix is a bit muddy for me, maybe a bit too much reverb on too many things, but if it was tightened up, that would make the groove even better; you have one of those "feeling loose but moving" things going on, which I always really enjoy. You do tend to heavily process your vocals, it gives me a very 60s memory from it. I dunno if that's good or bad.
Thanks Johnny, I'm a longtime fan of both REM and RHCP, so I'll take it! You're in Austin right? Hope not experiencing too much of Harvey's wrath. This is my second hurricane season here on the coast of South Carolina. It's on the brain, and hurricane references have made it into a few sets of lyrics lately.
I'm really liking BM3 so far, but I'm not as excited about how my output from it is shaping up for my September SOTMC project (I work a month ahead, for the following...) but I'm sure that's me, and not the apps.
I echo the sentiments of @richardyot - please give us something to chew on this month. Even if it's shit (it won't be), it'll be for the best! May your creative juices be flowing...
