Patiently waiting for those bindings. MIDI triggering is the only reason I bought the app. I have plenty of generative sequencers already on iOS, Max4lLive, Reaktor, etc.
Honestly, I'm a little disappointed that you can't achieve the interaction in the demo video currently with the app. That's a bit misleading. On the bright side, at least it gives me some time to learn the interface.
@sebastianarnold : +1 on what @Carnbot said about scrollable midi device selection window. When I connect my iPad to my iConnectivity ICM4+ I can’t reach the midi settings for my keyboard any longer, as the pop-out window for midi devices isn’t scrollable, and I have a lot more midi endpoints that can’t fit into the current window. See screenshot below. That is about a third of my midi end-points.
@sebastianarnold
Looking forward to midi bindings.
I like the idea of Senode and enjoyed watching your TED presentation.
I for one would like finer granularity of ticks. As I understand the current scheme 4 ticks = quarter note. Wish that could drop to a much smaller value like 64th triplet. Or even better, give the user the clock pulses per quarter note (ppqn) and let them enter that as desired. This could allow for more complex rhythms.
For example, The Black Page by Frank Zappa is in common time. But feels nothing like 4/4. From the wiki:
" It is written in common time with extensive use of tuplets, including tuplets inside tuplets. At several points there is a crotchet triplet (sixth notes) in which each beat is counted with its own tuplet of 5, 5 and 6; at another is a minim triplet (third notes) in which the second beat is a rubato quintuplet (actually a tuplet of 7), and the third beat is divided into tuplets of 4 and 5. The song ends with a crotchet triplet composed of tuplets of 5, 5, and 6, followed by two tuplets of 11 in the space of one."
I would love to create nodes based on the above rules. 20 years ago I could do this kind of thing with cakewalk on the pc. The cakewalk quarter note resolution was about 400 pulses per quarter note. With that knowledge I could at least compute by hand the values the values of a minimum triplet and its rubato quintuplet second beat and enter it by hand in to the cakewalk event list. Tedious but worth it.
In iOS land no sequencer really handles this kind of rhythm at all. I wish all iOS sequencers published thier ppqn and supported note entry at that level. And support changing time signature on the fly.
Control over bpm via a midi trigger or c midi CC would be great addition to nodal too.
Thanks for listening![ ](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
@sebastianarnold
Loving the app. Another thing I've noticed is that when you jump to another app there's a drop in midi communication briefly and it goes out of sync a little then comes back...
Don Henley: Why can't you make my drums sound like John Bonham's drums?
Glyn Johns: For a very simple reason. You can't play like John Bonham.
True overheard exchange
@sebastianarnold
Great work on the app, such a creative tool and interesting way to jam and spark new ideas. Looking forward to some of the things you have planned.
FWIW, A few thoughts (some may already be in the works!):
— LINK!
— Scales!
— Scale keyboard
— Synth parameters change to MIDI CCs when emitter (MIDI) is selected. with master velocity, aftertouch, modulation as default.
StepPolyArp has an elegant way of dealing with assignments / naming, see attached.
— Copy / Paste
— MIDI CC values per node
— multi function UI / dial to change note, velocity, gate, tick, MIDI CC etc. (could be on a node and also emitter property values). I'm sure there are better examples but arturia imini pop-over dial works very well to reveal the values that get hidden by your finger, attached.
— more fine grain options than 1 tick (important for low bpm tracks)
— randomise velocity parameters — alters assigned velocities within a sequence by a percentage range (humanises repetitive sequences)
— hide keyboard
really anal UI things... (sorry!)
—apple san francisco font (rather than verdana)
— square edges to emitters
keep up the great work, I can see this turning into one of my favourite apps![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Senode with connect to Layr is a absolutly dreamteam
Nice update today![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
No Link yet but new edge probablities panel etc
Probabilities are very nice. I was sort of enjoying building complex routings of dummy modules to get the timings right, but it was taking up lots of screen space...
Synchronization is obviously the big missing feature, but I've been enjoying this app quite a bit for its user directed randomization.
Nice![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Yeah this has a lot of potential but I've held back from getting too deep because of lack of Link so far. Hopefully that's not far off...
Nice. Does this have MIDI in yet?
I remember the dev saying he will implement into the app the possibility of controlling and launching sequences via electronic drums... Are we there yet?
wow this is glorious! do not miss out on the the presets, starting with moon cookies
can you program 5/4 or 13/4 etc. groove in this?
and can u have trills?
i watch examples and most of them use it for synth and not for drums, what could you say?
Ok, first off: sick pinball hyperspace seq app!
So, i know you trigger the bass drum and its like midi on and off. Then in goes into the "pinball mode" and creates baselines like in video, amazing yet simple.
IS there a trigger type thing in the app, or like impaktor where the mic picks up the signal and then to synth. Basically to do something similar to your bass drum trigger but with other instruments( no pitch detection needed).
I have midi apps, and impaktor. If thats the idea then i don't think i want the pitch detection of say midimorphisis but rather impaktors more basic on off synth (not sure it that is midi)
Hope this hasn't been covered, thanks so much I bought it just thinking b4 I dive...
Trying to figure out ways to build progressions to go beyond the bar loop stuff. @aplourde already gave some ideas there for me. Anyone else managed to get some nice juice from Senode?![ ](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
As a user of Nodal on the desktop I can't believe I missed this.
However, the buzz has died, and no updates since December.
What's the verdict six months on?
I think the verdict is “Rozeta.”
Seriously, I love Senode. Now you have me curious to see if any iOS updates have broken it. Haven’t tried it in a while, so thanks for reminding me about it!![B) B)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/sunglasses.png)
Sadly, i'm keeping my device 32bit friendly on iOS10![ ](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smiley.png)
But I plan on buying a new one for iOS11 later this year
It's really good, but disappointed we don't have midi triggers in/Link yet.
The MIDI triggers in are the big one for me--would be so excellent with this feature.
Thanks.
What are the timing ranges and gate length ranges for the nodes?
Do the nodes have separate probabilities for exits?
Is the canvas infinite (like audulus)?
Sorry, just being funny earlier.![:p :p](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/tongue.png)
The ranges, per the manual. I believe the ticks can be 1-16.
![](https://forum.audiob.us/uploads/editor/t7/dzsoqe2g4q89.jpeg)
Here you can see the different path probabilities. Goes from off to 1.0.
![](https://forum.audiob.us/uploads/editor/c6/v6alxgh6qndb.png)
The canvas seems infinite, but maybe I just haven’t hit the boundary yet. It expands as needed, though. Just drag your node to the edge and new real estate will become available.
I rate this app - one of my faves,
but no midi in and link missing is really disappointing.
Also - the dev mentioned he was going to get the step trigger in happening so that drummers (anything) can trigger.
This alone will make it absolutely amazing...
I really hope he is a believer.
Thanks. Good re the canvas and the path probabilities but not so happy about the note lengths (Sorry, should have read the description better.)
With Nodal I can play a note until the universe ends if I want to. So many midi generators assume you want to play rapid notes and leave few options for ambient drones etc. Or am I misunderstanding something?
The length of a played note is the multplication of the Node's tick value (1-16) times the Emitter's tick value (1-16), where a tick is 1/4 a beat at the current tempo. So a note can be 1 tick up to 256 ticks. In 4/4 that's 1/16 note up to 16 measures.
As you're limited to 1x to 16x the Emitter value you can't mix really fast with really slow notes, but with clever routing, multiple chains, multiple Emitters per chain, etc. you can accomplish a lot.
Many thanks for clarifying that. Hence the need I guess for midi sync to give you greater flexibility. I'll have to think some more about whether if the dev never updated it again I'd be happy with what it does now.
Thanks to all for your help and answers.
On the one hand, I love this app and want people to support it so the developer keeps supporting it. It's not as powerful as Nodal (branching is only random, no sequential or parallel modes), but there really isn't anything else quite like it on iOS. I personally find most apps that have "randomizing" features, too chaotic. They're obviously the product of an algorithm, not a person. These types of nodal networks allow you to create structured melodies with subtle variations, or evolving harmonies that harmonize!
That said, without a real syncing method*, its a bit of a walled garden. I'm mainly using it for self-contained aleatoric pieces (and I'm really liking what I'm getting), but I would like to use it in conjunction with other apps. Precisely because it doesn't have sequential branching, I want to use other sequencers to create those structures.
*as with most things, there's always a way to get things done. You should be able to set up a node that's outputting a MIDI note as the beat, then use an app like MIDIBus or MIDIFire to derive the tempo from those MIDI note taps. Send that clock to MIDI Link Sync or Link to MIDI and you're set, with Senode as your master clock.
Still, @sebastianarnold, please don't abandon this! A real Ableton Link implementation would make this incredibly useful.
Just got an update, with midi bindings for the emitters![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
The opaque science of ...midi bindings for emitters... sends me scurrying back to my ukelele....
