Sounds good to me. I missed the home button on my iphone x for no more than a day. The increased screen estate is worth it

Or with an iPad, you could just make the device one centimetre longer?

And then people would have to replace their covers, keyboards etc. and you'd have another segment complaining

Like they usually have to when they buy a new device anyway?

I was thinking more like all the whining when they ditched the jack stick

You mean people concerned about the loss of the headphone socket?

Yeah who needs sockets and buttons - what we need is a device the size of a postage stamp (used in analogue pre-digital communication), the thickness of a human hair, controlled with the power of the mind. Which will be obsolete a week later by a new one that exists only via the medium of mime.

You know no one is forcing you to buy these things right?

    See my original post.

I did read that but keep in mind you responded to my post initially. A post that simply stated i was happy with the change. So we're not allowed to be happy with change?

    Did I say that?

I love the music used in this animation. It is from the soundtrack for "Amelie" composed by Yann Tiersen if anyone is interested.

  • No real complaints here, as long as I can tape over the cameras and sign in with a passcode. I’ve always thought the large bezel borders were goofy looking. Good riddance.

  • And comically, the iPhone X demo in front of the world showed us that yes, you can still sign in with passcode

  • Hope they don’t take away too many physical buttons or a hard restart may be difficult ;)

I get irked by the ‘whinging’ and ‘complaining’ labels used for anyone expressing a different point of view. We don’t all want a wafer thin device with no buttons or sockets - personally I’d like to see more - maybe a row of knobs on the front so I don’t have to buy a midi controller. Some nice big Bakelite pots. And a couple of quarter inch jacks on the back so I can plug in my bass.

I’ve got ‘progress’ fatigue, so yeah, I’m probably coming across as a crabby old git. Just ignore me, I’ll be going to bed soon.

I agree with not wanting this continuation of thinner, less physical controls and sockets over what I would consider more important things.

I’m sure when people say the usual:

    You’re not the market demographic
    Apple knows it’s market
    You are a minority user
You’re not forced to buy it
    Etc
    Etc.....

I’m sure they don’t really think it through. We get passionate about iOS devices as many of us have invested and awful lot into this as a method of working and there is quite simply no direct replacement. An iPad has no close equivalent in my opinion.

So, we watch and we worry at times. Yes, it’s only a device, but it is at this time, the only music making device that really has a comfortable fit with my lifestyle.

This is just me thinking aloud and not aimed at anyone :)

I was hoping for an iPad pro oled screen with the home button . Face recognition? They already have enough digital data info on most of us. What’s next ...a dna check to see if we are compatible. Given all the personal data that Apple is collecting on us, it seems hypocritical that they refuse to help the FBI crack the phones of captured terrorists because of "privacy concerns".

Agreed. Even though my air1 is starting to really hesitate on tasks (that has to be programmed because I’m really not doing anything new that I wasn’t doing last year when it ran smoothly), I have just about zero desire to buy another iPad. And my 6s is having similar issues on ios11, and having no desire to get a device without a headphone jack, nor a desire to get an android. I’ll just use it until it’s absolutely dead then figure out if I want to do anything. I still am enjoying my 2011 MacBook Air though, it runs like a champ and does everything I need it to do.

My basses, pedals, and amp though? No OS updates to make them stop working.

    Wow.

  • It’s all part of the plan.
Most of you wont want to hear this but they are collecting all your biometric data and they’ve been conditionning you into accepting it... even wanting it.
You think marijuana legalization is about letting you enjoy a puff of mary jane? Think again,
What comes with it; DNA collection for roadside checks (instead of breathalizers). All your data is being harvested and they are going to determine who breeds in the future and most of us wont make the list.
Why would a device need 30,000 differnet points of your face? Because facial recognition cameras will be everywhere within 5 years. You wont be able to take a piss without being traced (if your troublesome... like me). You are all heading into a Brave New World. All the major corporations, banks and govts are part of it. They will take complete control of human reproduction and force transhumanism on everyone. Brain chips are coming (taylor swift: are you ready for it?). It’s called Agenda 2030 and it’s no conspiracy.
Every thing will be globalized and you will all be forced to live in mega cities. All food production will be under their control. You will be forced vaccinated and you will pay carbon credits and soon you will not be driving or allowed to possess a gas powered vehicle. Private property will be outlawed. Children will be raised by the state to ensure they get the ‘proper’ gender.
You don’t need to go to the movies to be horrified... just take a walk in your city.
2 words will dominate all of you forever more: Sustainable Development
    You will see that everywhere.
This has all been planned out. All your ‘entertainment’ is social conditioning. All your politics is theatre. A hidden hand controls the world and they dont like us.
I’m so sorry... but it’s all true.

I see what you did there. ;)

I remember buying an iMac back in 1999, and I remember there being a lot of whining about Apple releasing a computer with no floppy drive.

I see that not much has changed even decades later, and there is a new generation of naysayers and doubters, or perhaps they're the same people that have always been wrong for decades in a row . :)

The way I see things is that Apple has almost always been right, while the doubters have almost always been wrong, and in many cases dead wrong.

As for removing the home button from iPads, if the rumor is true, and I can certainly see it being true, because of the iPhone X, then I see it as a natural progression, and I wouldn't mind if it happened.

I've owned many iPads, and my current iPad is an iPad Pro 10.5, which I'm pretty happy with, and if a 2018 iPad has no home button, then that will allow for an even larger display within the same size body, or perhaps the same size display in a smaller overall frame. Either way, it's a positive.

    Bring it on.

  • @StudioES said:
Hopefully they'll keep the 'Soft' Home button option in Settings>Accessibility>Assistive Touch. Anybody else use this?

I'm using it right now on an iPad 2 whose home button works very intermittently.

    Good riddance to moving parts.

Exactly I agree . We also need to be very concerned about the data harvesting especially on children. The selling of our digital footprints even if inaccurate is a very lucrative business..in the trillions

I’m aware of all you mention here and it’s disturbing their agenda of a technocratic new world order.. In regards to the facial recognition I believe they are deliberately hyper inflating the fear in people about identity theft and loss of privacy. Soon they will convince us if we get chipped under our skin we will be safe and secure. The Pope has an agenda to get the one fifth of the worlds population without a digital identity to get one so all can be tracked and accounted for within the hive. So much for freedom. With fear as their tool they will get us demanding to be chipped rather than them forcing it directly upon us. Hope their plan gets foiled

  • I didn’t read much of this thread, but do believe me when I say nixing the Home Button is a smart move. That and the volume buttons are usually the first things to wear out on an iPhone. It’s why I use the floating Assisted Touch menu for those functions. Not having to press a home button in the floating menu would be a time saver, even if by a mere second, lol.

The thing about this is: it makes no sense. A phone is a personal device so faceID is defendable.

But in most households the iPad is a device shared by the entire family. It sits on the couch and is picked up by anyone who needs to look up the name of that actor on IMDB. It ridiculous to have to train it with every family member...

Apples vision is apparently that every single human being has their own personal 'iDevice(s)' with no sharing == 100% security or something like that :D

I suppose families could just use a passcode and bypass Face ID
