Why would a device need 30,000 differnet points of your face? Because facial recognition cameras will be everywhere within 5 years. You wont be able to take a piss without being traced (if your troublesome... like me). You are all heading into a Brave New World. All the major corporations, banks and govts are part of it. They will take complete control of human reproduction and force transhumanism on everyone. Brain chips are coming (taylor swift: are you ready for it?). It’s called Agenda 2030 and it’s no conspiracy.
Every thing will be globalized and you will all be forced to live in mega cities. All food production will be under their control. You will be forced vaccinated and you will pay carbon credits and soon you will not be driving or allowed to possess a gas powered vehicle. Private property will be outlawed. Children will be raised by the state to ensure they get the ‘proper’ gender.
You don’t need to go to the movies to be horrified... just take a walk in your city.
2 words will dominate all of you forever more: Sustainable Development
    You will see that everywhere.
This has all been planned out. All your ‘entertainment’ is social conditioning. All your politics is theatre. A hidden hand controls the world and they dont like us.

Or with an iPad, you could just make the device one centimetre longer?

And then people would have to replace their covers, keyboards etc. and you'd have another segment complaining

Like they usually have to when they buy a new device anyway?

I was thinking more like all the whining when they ditched the jack stick

You mean people concerned about the loss of the headphone socket?

Yeah who needs sockets and buttons - what we need is a device the size of a postage stamp (used in analogue pre-digital communication), the thickness of a human hair, controlled with the power of the mind. Which will be obsolete a week later by a new one that exists only via the medium of mime.

You know no one is forcing you to buy these things right?

    See my original post.

I did read that but keep in mind you responded to my post initially. A post that simply stated i was happy with the change. So we're not allowed to be happy with change?

    Did I say that?

Maybe it's a language barrier since i'm not a native english speaker, but i'm getting a sorta confrontational vibe from your replies. If that's not the case, i apologise

I get irked by the ‘whinging’ and ‘complaining’ labels used for anyone expressing a different point of view. We don’t all want a wafer thin device with no buttons or sockets - personally I’d like to see more - maybe a row of knobs on the front so I don’t have to buy a midi controller. Some nice big Bakelite pots. And a couple of quarter inch jacks on the back so I can plug in my bass.

I’ve got ‘progress’ fatigue, so yeah, I’m probably coming across as a crabby old git. Just ignore me, I’ll be going to bed soon.

I agree with not wanting this continuation of thinner, less physical controls and sockets over what I would consider more important things.

I’m sure when people say the usual:

    You’re not the market demographic
    Apple knows it’s market
    You are a minority user
You’re not forced to buy it
    Etc
    Etc.....

I’m sure they don’t really think it through. We get passionate about iOS devices as many of us have invested and awful lot into this as a method of working and there is quite simply no direct replacement. An iPad has no close equivalent in my opinion.

So, we watch and we worry at times. Yes, it’s only a device, but it is at this time, the only music making device that really has a comfortable fit with my lifestyle.

This is just me thinking aloud and not aimed at anyone :)

    Spot on.

I've invested thousands in the iOS platform, and it concerns me when they do something that makes new devices less functional (for me).

For example the headphone socket. I have a line-out from this, that goes directly into my PC mic socket. That way I can record live from the iPad, performance oriented apps such as Samplr and Geoshred. Or it provides an easy way to sample from YouTube, and other sources.

Or I can hook it up to my hifi or other speakers for a noisy session. Sometimes I even use it for plugging in headphones.

So what do I do if this is removed? Not sure if the PC connection could be fixed but for everything else:

Spend more money. Buy more stuff. Bluetooth. And when you've replaced all your kit we'll change it again.

The built in obsolescence cycle is running faster than my wallet.

I didn’t read much of this thread, but do believe me when I say nixing the Home Button is a smart move. That and the volume buttons are usually the first things to wear out on an iPhone. It’s why I use the floating Assisted Touch menu for those functions. Not having to press a home button in the floating menu would be a time saver, even if by a mere second, lol.

I'm sure there's a way, but how would you do a hard reset if your device freezes?

I use the onscreen soft button as my 3GS iPhone one wore out, but I still use the physical one as well. I've never worn out volume controls, but sometimes on screen controls are a PITA when you're using software as well.

They seem to have an obsession with making everything thinner, removing buttons and ports for what? So some airhead can look good when they whip out a sleek fashion accessory in the coffee shop?

I'm a musician. I need more knobs, buttons and sockets, not less. Maybe they need to make a separate version for luddites like me.

Total agreement here. It’s all so iPads can sell as a fashion item and keep high prices. So only Microsoft has seen that there is a need for a power over style touch device, yet they still use Windows. Sorry but Windows has never liked me the way it treats me like shit (The feeling is mutual) lol.

Laptops have a different way of buying the software and to be honest the whole laptop thing just feels clunky in the way it works. Yet, laptops do have more sockets, until Apple remove them all! Apple laptops are overpriced and underpowered at the starting levels.

How about a real Pro ipad with a full compliment of sockets, big enough and hard enough to take the knocks of real life Pro use - I can even forgive iOS it’s foibles as at least it isn’t Windows!

How about making sure storage is cheap and plentiful? Why? Because Apple make a shit ton of money selling Apps, Music, Films etc etc....yet they would sell so much more if they made it easier to store the stuff offline!

Anyhoo rant at the world over lol

lnteresting thoughts here. Removal of home button probably is not that big of a deal, many android phones have had soft buttons for years. Besides, it’s become very obvious that there is no intention that this is a device that is intended to last You years. I can’t believe I’m calling my iPad Air 1 ancient now, I still have clothes I wear every day that are older than my iPad Air and they are fine! (Ok, full disclosure, I may not be what people refer to as a fashion plate...definitely not hip or hipster and I don’t frequent the coffee shop either, I just make it at home)

The removal of the headphone jack was very bothersome to me though because Bluetooth is not a better alternative. It’s different and it works for its purpose, but not for making music. That’s not even looking at possible implications of all of this RF, as has been mentioned but not in a conspiracy theory way. Having a microwave radio or whatever it may actually be an inch from your brain is no doubt going to have some implications down the line.

Either way, I am going to have to force myself to be in the “head up society.” It’s not going to be easy because I’ll admit that I’m addicted to my device. Will I film someone jumping from a ledge rather than helping? No, partly because I’m a social worker so I’m trained to help in that kind of situation but also no because I do still have human parts, but I’m constantly checking email or (and I wasn’t kidding when I said irony before!) typing and reading message boards, etc...

As fate would have it I am being presented with an opportunity for a change in my work life and if that does happen I’ll be on my own rather than working for an organization (in the employee sense) for the first time in my life, which will require a lot more “head up society” moments if I want to be successful.

Wow, long post but I’m thankful that I was able to write it and work out some thoughts...thanks for the posts in this topic, they’ve made me think.

After much personal loss and sorrow over the past few years I thought I’d try ios music making to help me get back into the swing of music making. Unfortunately I’ve collected more things than I know what to do with and have a few unfinished songs on the back burners of my life. Think I’ll just cling to my Mini 2 and try to simplify things so I can get some work done and ignore the latest announcements...they cause too much personal and monetary angst.

Totally! And for ‘regular’ songwriting Garage Band might just be the ticket.

  • You can kinda get the home button back on the iPhone X using assistive touch :)

I really can't see a single thing that anyone has said in this thread that would make me miss the home button. If you can only have one person device, than that's a problem, but I would be mightily surprised if that was so. Everything else just sounds like fluff, guys. At least there was SOME reason for complaining about the headphone jack going. But this one? Sheesh.

You’ll soon be telling your iPhone to power on so who needs the power button?!!

  • So without the home button how do you do a hard reset of you iPad ie On/Off and home long press till the Apple appears? Any new iPhone X owners wish to comment?

There are other button combinations for that...

Something like first volume up and then side-button or was it down, or up/down then power button or something like that :D (The behaviour is also changed on the iPhone 8).

  • The big one is when the lightning dock has to go (due to prevalence of magnetic charging). The future of low latency audio could be at risk :D

  • Interesting thread, with spot comments. My input.
The iPad is in the first place a media consumption device. Through the years creative app devs developed all kind of interesting production apps, but still this market is not very big in my eyes. Production work on Macbooks and iMacs is so much more accurate (using mouse) although new iPads can become faster than Mac OS devices working will still be more clumsy (ie video editing).

The iPad numbers are for Apple in the cheap tablets not the Pro's. The Pro's are more a proof of concept so far and is a niche market as long as it's impossible to use a mouse on an iPad. I think Apple doesn't really care about a small group of audio people that want hardware buttons and headphone jacks, because it knows that Apple users once caught in the eco system will be flexible.

Thanks for the suggestion for Garage Band. I had it on my device years ago and barely scratched it( I was mostly in a bad state at that time) Since it’s getting some very nice updates lately it would be wise to redownload and check it out again.
