  • Hopefully someone will 'buy' the rights to Z3TA+ and continue it's development...
(The latest update was more then a 'bug fix' as the app got a major speed-boost due to being compiled with newer tools).

  • Damn. I used Cakewalk for DOS up through Sonar 2 or so. Long live Twelve Tone Systems!

If Apple was to buy it, we'd likely see it in garage band

While I have a lot of respect for Alex and the way he handled that situation - I'd be very surprised if he knew the plug was about to be pulled.

    This sucks.

He may not have known, but some execs probably did and Alex was still able to get the update approved, funded, completed, and out the door. A small miracle, perhaps.

Or maybe they just had coders with time on their hands as they weren’t busy updating sonar.....

  • Wow.. that's somehow quite a shocker.

I've spent so many hours looking at this screen. Thanks for the fun times, guys!

Or maybe the update was done years ago and they forgot to release it. Or maybe they didn't forget and were just being meanies. Or maybe it didn't REALLY update at all, just another B.S. update notification (any mention of LINK in the last update?).

  • please ask them to port project 5 over to iOS before they clean out their desk!

I just feel so down about this. I loved Cakewalk products for pretty much the last decade and this one, at least up until I purchased z3ta+ for iPad in 2015. Then for two and a half years, I fought with them to have it updated with a simple bug fix. I’m not even sure if z3ta+ for iPad would’ve been fixed had it not been for my big mouth in the Momentum thread. @alexwestner walked right into the storm there and quelled it.

Since that time, things were looking up. I joined their beta testing team just to help get z3ta+ working good as new again. I invested a lot in this app, not just the initial $19.99. Come to find out that Gibson were the ones most likely running the show, were the ones most likely telling Cakewalk what to do, how to do it, when to do it, and since z3ta+ on iPad wasn’t making Gibson any real cash, decided to constantly delay Cakewalk from giving us the update we needed.

Anyways, I already tossed a hint towards Lars @LFS about buying the rights to z3ta+ from Cakewalk. Hey, Auria has their fully featured synth in Fabfilter Twin, so why can’t Cubasis have their fully featured third-party licensed synth in z3ta+? Hell I’d even pay another $19.99 to have it as an in-app purchase within Cubasis’ architecture. I hope this becomes a reality.

  • Wow, and was just about to upgrade my Sonar Subscription.

  • I am quite bummed about this. Been my go-to desktop DAW for 10 years now. I remember being equally bummed when Gibson did this with Opcode 20 years ago. Not a Gibson fan...

  • I did so much research before I bought Sonar. Sure wish I bought Cubase. Sigh... I’m going to stick with it as long as I can.

  • Another brand for the memory :(

It was my first serious DAW back in the day with win3.1 or win95... long time ago. Lately I used Sonar until Cubase 5 and Live... shame. It had very interesting technologies all over the time.

Yeah, I was just about to mention Opcode. I bought an Opcode MIDI interface way back when and got fucked because Gibson acquired them and didn't update the drivers for it.

One more reason why Gibson is the worst music company on the planet. Although not quite as bad as illegally smuggling endangered wood into the US that they knew had been poached from a national park in Madagascar. Or doing shady deals with a dictator to get wood from Fiji. Or putting Made in USA stickers on Japanese imports. Yes, Gibson has done those things.

..or as bad as hiding a hack that exposed the data of 57 millions customers and then paying the hackers hush money.

Like suing Activision over Guitar Hero, despite the fact that the game comes with licensed Gibson branded mini Les Pauls?!?

The heads of both those companies share some remarkably similar outlooks/philosophies on society. A coincidence? I will say no more.

  • I’m hanging my Gibson “Gitte” on the wall, in protest.
gonna make love to my Stratocaster tonight...

  • Fender bought SWR only to shut it down soon after, they’re not much better...

I've bought Gibson's before, owned two nice SG Customs & a Showcase Edition '88 Les Paul Custom with EMG pickps that was kind of a heavy metal axe but could still do anything you threw at it. But the Gibson hallmark of being not the easiest guitars to stay in tune meant I have favored Fender guitars for years now.

The CEO of Henry Juszkiewicz gets a lot of the blame for the dark cloud Gibson has been under and sorry, dude deserves all of the blame. Read an interview with him and you'll see how arrogantly out of touch he is with what guitarists want & how he views the other companies under the Gibson umbrella as afterthoughts.

Baldwin, Kramer, Onkyo & Slingerland are all brands that have suffered under Gibson ownership. My heart will always have a soft spot for Tascam/TEAC as I learned recording on PortaStudio's & still use Tascam equipment to this day. But when Gibson Brands took a majority stake of the company in 2013 I genuinely worried about the future of the company.

While Tascam is doing okay, still popular in our community, no real development or juice has been funnelled into rhe company. It's reminiscent of how Cakewalk has been the last several years under Gibson, just sort of THERE, no real innovation or quality output going on. I hope Tascam doesn't fall victim next...

If Gibson doesn't see that they're not a luxury brand, like Rolex or Ferrari (something that tool Henry has said they are) and seriously try to compete with the litany of well made guitars out there that DON'T cost a literal arm & a leg they'll get worse & worse. Fuck robot tuners, how about a well made SG with good pickups & that stays in tune through a whole song?

Too bad about Cakewalk. If it weren't for Epiphone & KRK the Gibson company as we know it may have already perished...

Me too! Looked at this one for a while first: . I have a working Windows 98 machine with both versions on there. :)

Greg Hendershott, founder of Cakewalk (Twelve Tone Systems), was a class-act though.

Totally agree. Had a few interactions with him back in the day (like, "using Pine for email" back in the day) and had similar experiences.

  • Momentum lives up it’s name, it was here for a moment.

I feel sorry for the engineers behind it having their hard work, presumably, canned.

  • user since 2.0 version (midi only) on old 486 pc

Must be hard to compete with Apple giving logic away for £200.

Let's be real here... that price tag is just a fig leaf. The could easily just give Logic away for free but that would destroy the DAW market and paint Apple in a bad (worse) light.

Did Cakewalk port Sonar to MacOS?

  • I wonder if Garageband will be getting a "zeta" addition synth......
