Fantastically helpful, Richard. You are the Bob Ludwig of the forums! (Connactic, You are the Howie Weinberg. Fight it out amongst yourselves.)

Can anyone advise me... is Pro-L best used just on the master, or also on individual tracks?

Pro L is designed to go on the master, rather than on individual tracks. For individual tracks or busses use a compressor.

The best way to use Pro L IMO is to set it to use the K scale, for EDM use K12 and you will get a track that is loud but without crushing all the dynamics out of it. It's very easy to over-egg a limiter (I used to do this all the time), but with the K scale you learn to use it more deftly.

Tap the metering section bottom right and set the scale to K12:

Then you should aim for the quiet parts of the track to hit zero:

And the louder parts to hit the yellow, and very occasionally the red, parts of the meter:

What you don't want is for the limiter to be always in the red, crushing all the peaks all the time:

In terms of organising your tracks for limiting, I find it essential to use the SubGroups in Auria. If you have 40 or more tracks, sending each and every one to a small number of subgroups means it's much easier to make overall volume adjustments to balance the mix for the master channel. I tend to send all the drum parts to one group, all the music to another, vocals to a third etc. That means if I need to reduce the volume going into the limiter I can do it with with just three faders rather than fiddling with forty. It also makes it much easier to change the balance between drums and music, or vocals and music etc...

Also it's worth tapping the "out" setting bottom left and dialing that back half a db or so to allow some additional headroom for SoundCloud conversion etc...

Thanks for these helpful tips and suggestions. Will come in handy when I’m ready to tackle Pro-L, much appreciated sir!

  • Well brought pro r ... it showed 14.99 on Auria screen.. when I clicked to buy .. App Store confirmation came as 19.99$ :(

  • Strange, because Pro R full price is $39,99, so the correct sale price is indeed $19.99 (50% off), so I don’t get the $14,99...

  • Hello,
I already have Pro C and Pro Q (old versions)

Now I want to purchase Pro L and Pro R.

Do I really need to upgrade to Pro C2 and Pro Q 2 ?
Did you notice a big difference from version 1?

P.S.: a RMS level around -12 with a peak reduction of up tp six will give you a fairly loud result.

P.P.S.: but with more streaming services using LUFS-based loudness normalising, should we really using limiting for loudness (as opposed to for purposedly reducing dynamics) when mastering for streaming services? Nowadays I only apply ludness treatment when mastering to Youtube and Soundcloud. The Loudness War is over.

I honestly think the Loudness War never began. Andrew WK won it in 2001.

  • Had microwarmer but got Pro L as above with Pro R and Pro Q2.... used 80 dollar 100 buck card with 50% off woot.

  • Considering buying the following?

    What are your thoughts

    1. Pro G
    2. Pro Mb
    3. Microwarmer ( only based on reviews here). What exactly does it do?
The youtube videos I saw ...did not seem clear
    4. Timeless
    5. Saturn ( again based on reviews here)

Of Course I have other basic FF's plugins

From that list I would choose Timeless - best delay ever made. It does everything.

Microwarmer is a limiter that can add tape saturation effects - it's pretty nice in small doses. Pro-MB is great for drum loops and acoustic guitars, and Saturn is also a top-notch distortion effect.

@richardyot That there is all fantastic advice for how to use Pro L.
I’m sure I also read or saw somewhere, that the top right hand meter (gain reduction?) shouldn’t have a max peak above -5 or so.
    Or am I mistaken?

Not sure about an actual specific figure (maybe someone with more expertise can weigh in), but the more gain reduction you add, the more distortion there will be. Generally if you use the K scale the gain reduction will be relatively gentle, so you shouldn't hit those kinds of peaks.

Thanks for the advice Richard. Really appreciated.

acoustic guitars - Pro Mb - How do you use it? very interested to know

Easy: start with the preset "Steel Stringed AccGuitar Clarity" and tweak it to taste. It really helps to give a little bite to the tone, and you can balance the lows and highs.

  • I like the stereo imaging on Final Touch, how can i get something similar with Fabfilters?

    Simple answer; yes.

The upgrade for Q was a no brainer for me after watching the details in the release videos from fabfilter (which, on a side note, are probably the best videos out there...I want that guy to talk at my funeral because he’ll make me sound freaking amazing). The C2 upgrade was one I rode the fence on until last night. I can’t believe I hesitated. It’s a massive upgrade UI wise over the first. Sound wise? I’d have to leave that to more discernible ears, but the ui update alone is worth the twenty bucks (assuming the sale is in fact now over). My two cents.

  • I second this!

  • @boone51 and @theconnactic

My ears and my heart thank you,
I grabbed -while still on sale-
    ProC 2 and Pro Q 2 Upgrades
    Pro R
    Pro L

Happy to invest in such brilliant plug-ins
These will last, that's for sure !
