Is CIRUIT the new SP-1200?
I think so.
I find myself more inspired with the Circuit through its simplicity and raw creativity that in a long time.
Especially as I try and put sample sets together it really is so easier to make real music for me that seems to make real world sense. Not some creation that works for the "apps I am on at the time".
Sometimes the ease of options of iOS and the technical limitations suck the creative energy out of my sessions.
I end up sending reports or restarting things way to much. One time and the flow is often done.
So I think the Circuit is a new approach using an old style with modern technical gold.
Perfect balance of what I needed in my present place of music making.
I also have found that Circuit has helped me scrap apps that really don't do real things I need.
Ironically, Gadget has rocketed back to the top of the pile along with the Launchpad app, Looptunes, DRC, BlocsWave, iMPC pro2, Reslice, Samplr, Mitosynt, Poison, and Animoog.
The Circuit is the perfect addition to a person who is slightly full on memory and feel like something is missing.
The Circuit filled the void for me.

I've had mine for 18 months...use it very regularly..and am still finding little surprises with what it can do and what it can be used for
You were a pioneer.........

I am not sure how many people on here even used an SP so maybe the thread title is a non starter....LOL
Fail thread.
I used one once, then said never again.
LOL
SP’s go for big bucks these days. Even the reissues. $3-5k US.
I know
I will stick with the circuit.
10 seconds of samples is a bit tight for me......
sooo, for those who have no idea what youre talking about, lol.... what is it and who makes it?? thx
I really like the circuit but find the sample loading palaver creativity sapping. Ditto volca sample. No,patience I think,it’s called
When house music and hip hop NYC creation was coming of age, it was the key.
You had to make the most out of limited sample space.
It is the OG of music making.
SP 1200 was the gold standard for hiphop until the MPC took over
If your a hip hop head you better know about it haha
Makes the drums nice and ring modulation is crazy on bell type samples
I don’t think a circuit is ever gonna sell for 3k tho haha
I would say the Digitakt is the modern day SP
Yes.
100%
Needs iOS access asap.
I imagine when they officially integrate Groove Box or Blocs that will happen.......
Hummm..
No.
LOL
It is the concept of Iimited space on a device and "make do" .......
Exact opposite of endless choices of iOS or computers.
I haven't seen such a "somewhat related type item to date" in years.
I know about the SP-1200, I used it a lot, I meant what is the " Circuit " ? you asked is it the new SP-1200, thats what I was asking about? lol
When you watch the effort old school producers had to make to produce what to me remains the most innovative music, I hang my head in shame at my need to immediate results
Exactly right.
Why I think the Circuit is interesting since it draws on the limitations in a productive modern way.
Except sample import method.
Agreed
As much as I love Elektron (fellow Swedes!), I'd say the new SP is the SP-404SX. It's filling the same function as the older one did culturally and creatively. Pretty much iconic status by now.
So there’s no menus whatsoever on the Circuit and no need to use software (other than sample import)? Because that sounds nice. I took a look at it and the interface seems so simple it makes me wonder how you know what your doing.
A working one probably will as they aren't exactly built to last. Folks have all sort of dust related issues even in year one,
I'd agree with that, good answer.
I love mine! This is so much fun!
Need a new soundpacl though. Bought myself a pack on blackfriday but I am not inspired by it.
I am still thinking of how to implement it into my iOS workflow. Really like the idea of @RUST( i )K that they will combine it with their apps. Circuit in combination with blocswave, Launchpad and groovebox would be really cool :-)
I'd have to 2nd the Digitakt as being the new sp1200 and the new sp303. I understand where Ribbon is coming from but imho the digi feels more like the sp 1200, the buttons feel more like sp 1200 buttons, and the way you can flip samples it puts the sp303/404 vibe into full tilt...+ the limited sample time on the digitakt lends itself to that limited creative ethos like on the sp 1200. I think it's a future classic that is just slowly catching on in the underground hiphop realm.
Oh I agree it's a great machine, and in more than one way it's superior to the SP-404SX. It just doesn't have the same status or market penetration yet. When I think of a 90's beat maker I picture them using a SP-1200 or MPC, but if I think of a 2017 one I picture them with the 404. Maybe next year things will turn
^^ yeah it just hasn't been around long enough, actually I think the digitakt and the sp303/404 make a great combo, you could even sequence the sp with the digi hmmm
Trust me, with my crackling iOS9 iPad Mini 1st gen and 4GB left of available memory out of 16, I do make do hehe.
Pretty sure Todd Terry was a big user of the sp1200.
Crazy thread! Sp1200, sp404, digitakt, circuit ... None of these boxes are much like each other!? Haha
Let's throw op1 in the mix too tho, a lot of dope hip hop coming from op1 now. Would never compare it to sp1200 or circuit but vaguely to sp404. Now I'm confused what I'm actually talking about
