Crazy thread! Sp1200, sp404, digitakt, circuit ... None of these boxes are much like each other!? Haha :)

Let's throw op1 in the mix too tho, a lot of dope hip hop coming from op1 now. Would never compare it to sp1200 or circuit but vaguely to sp404. Now I'm confused what I'm actually talking about :/

You know, Speak n Spells n stuff!

It's not a question of which is most similar to the SP-1200 in terms of features and whatnot but of what machine is now the go-to one for beatmaking, the same way the SP was back then. So all those listed devices are relevant to discuss even though they work very differently. At the end of the day, they all make beats.

Dunno.. MPC was pretty popular back then too and the Live seems pretty popular now too in beatmaking community. Ton of boxes to choose from today. Don't think there's really any modern 'go to' that a significant majority of people are using now... Ableton + Push2 is probably the thing found in the most amount of studios :/

Hence my point that those devices (404, OP-1, etc) are all relevant to discuss here. Premise of the thread is whether Circuit is the new SP or not. No one is saying that there aren't lots of popular devices around or that people only used SP's back then.

Re: Ableton Live, I'd say it's more related to how people used to use early versions of Cubase for beat making.

  • I think if someone like Pete Rock would make his tunes today he'd use a 200$ laptop from the supermarket instead of overpriced hardware ;)

Yeh I know what you mean ;) was just saying it's maybe kind of a self-imploding topic as I don't think there's 'one' go to device to ref/compare in either eras ;)

    Good point. Or their phone?
The SP was expensive back then though, not sure that's what Pete Rock started on. But maybe he did.

Got you  That's what makes the thread fun because there's no one correct answer. It's mostly an excuse to swoon over current machines. And a good one! ;)

  • I'm interested in the Octatrak after watching that demo looks awesome, in the meantime Groove Rider has my full attention

Haha! Always down for a gear swoon sesh ;) Anyone on here got a deluge? One of those boxes that from vids/specs I can't figure out if I'd totally love or totally hate??!

  • generally speaking these days the answer in hip hop production is either maschine or Flstudio. Both are optimised for quick beatmaking

  • I can definitely tell the difference between the octa and the digi

love what ice pulse does on the op-1

Yeah there's a little difference that good ears will hear, jus sayin for a classic hip-hop dust/grit kind of sound I prefer OT over DT ;) DT is slightly more airy/defined.

Yeah a lot of rad hiphop on op1! Oozes a sound that works perfect for hiphop and has that fast sp404 type 'fx+resample' workflow aspect that imparts tons of character :)

  • I guess when it comes to the iPad for hiphop production I feel best when I'm in Samplr.... although lack panning is freaking killing me

I have flstudio/ableton/reason/maschine.. but i got tired of coming home and sitting infront of the computer. I like my little studio because when i do sit down at it its completely removed from the computer world and no screens to stare into, i just make music. every machine has its own way.. and ive had many over the years (mpcs/ensoniq boxes/electribes/rack gear/synths/etc). Nothing has ever grabbed me like the OP1. Its so refreshing. I'm squirreling away money for the op-z. Dont know if it will be anything like the OP1 or if I will even like it but interested for sure

SP 1200 was the gold standard for hiphop until the MPC took over
If your a hip hop head you better know about it haha
Makes the drums nice and ring modulation is crazy on bell type samples

I don’t think a circuit is ever gonna sell for 3k tho haha

I would say the Digitakt is the modern day SP

A working one probably will as they aren't exactly built to last. Folks have all sort of dust related issues even in year one,

    Really

I always keep can duster at my side

    For dust of course.

It is the concept of Iimited space on a device and "make do" .......

Exact opposite of endless choices of iOS or computers.

I haven't seen such a "somewhat related type item to date" in years.

Trust me, with my crackling iOS9 iPad Mini 1st gen and 4GB left of available memory out of 16, I do make do hehe.

    Fuck me.

I am so sick of deleting and reinstalling apps like Sampletank.

I wish I could tailor what IAP portions I want on it.

    Same with Auria.

    Massive.

At least for me memory issues.

I love mine! This is so much fun!
Need a new soundpacl though. Bought myself a pack on blackfriday but I am not inspired by it.

I am still thinking of how to implement it into my iOS workflow. Really like the idea of @RUST( i )K that they will combine it with their apps. Circuit in combination with blocswave, Launchpad and groovebox would be really cool :-)

    What one?

Yeah I deleted Sampletank after 5 min tops (didn't gel with it at all) and I don't use a DAW on the iPad, just a sequencer/looper with internal or external synth sounds/samples, a mixer (AUM and/or Audiobus depending on the day) and one or two more apps for lead and/or fx at a time. Sometimes less. Sometimes I'll add external things such as mic/solenoid/instrument too. Or only use one them with one synth/fx/drum app or prerecorded track and nothing else. I like it simple.

    It was this here

    https://isotonikstudios.com/product/stratospheric-jim-drones/

I really liked the previews but I never got along with it. Thought there might be some cool ambient and downtempo things possible...

The fabric one that came with the circuit was super inspiring but here I don’t get good stuff going. I should put another pack into this thing and play tomorrow with it :) or randomize the shit out of the synth engine and create my own

What packs and samples can you recommend? What’s your favorite?
    Have a good one!
