Crazy thread! Sp1200, sp404, digitakt, circuit ... None of these boxes are much like each other!? Haha :)

Let's throw op1 in the mix too tho, a lot of dope hip hop coming from op1 now. Would never compare it to sp1200 or circuit but vaguely to sp404. Now I'm confused what I'm actually talking about :/

    OP-1: yes

^^ yeah it just hasn't been around long enough, actually I think the digitakt and the sp303/404 make a great combo, you could even sequence the sp with the digi hmmm

Stop it. Now I feel like buying lots of hardware again. Gaah.

  • Sampling try a Zoom AR-96,sampler, looper and synth.

    Yeah defiantly NOT an SP1200.
    You can’t even sample directly.
Plus the converters on older samplers cannot be duplicated via software. The SP1200 modeling on maschine isn’t even close for example.

  • maaaaaan 8 midi tracks to sequence the sp with.... the sp has gobs of sample time and stereo sampling....:D that just might be the new this!!!

I had a zoom sampletrak, but I'm not familiar with this one gonna have to look it up

I really like the circuit but find the sample loading palaver creativity sapping. Ditto volca sample. No,patience I think,it’s called

    Yes.

    100%

    Needs iOS access asap.

I imagine when they officially integrate Groove Box or Blocs that will happen....... ;)

    We. Can. Hope

ohhhhhh just recently caught up with that one, they just released a new on didn't they, ... weird vibe that one :)

It has it's quirks, but I was quite surprised by it's power.

  • the way you can take the ring off and wav it around is intriguing

Very similar to the iPad accelerometer, you can assign it's axis to quite a few destinations, a lot of the YouTube vids feature version 1 of it's OS, to see it using version 2 the German official Zoom tutorials give you a good idea of it's capabilities. Also it's recently received a price drop to around $199.

All these years and never knew the SP had a chromatic mode. Explains a lot.

Agree that the Digitakt is closer to the SP than the Circuit. Especially now that I know about chromatic mode. :)

For a moment I misread the thread title

  • A hardware version of Groovebox would be insane. Cool idea.

    $199 !

which one is better 94 or 48?

The AR-96, over here it's £174ish, noticed in the states was $199. I think at Sweetwater.

Have owned both an SP12 and an SP1200 in the past and currently own a Circuit amongst other toys.
Although the Circuit is a unique tool one thing it certainly is not is a modern SP.
It does not have the immediacy and simplicity of sampling that the SP’s have nor the legendary sound or the swing of the sequencer.
If you want something modern that has a similar “feel” I’d recommend the Pioneer SP16 which does have a similar feel in it’s quick workflow. T

  • The circuit is not a modern SP1200, not even close..
I agree that the closest is the Digitakt

  • Shame octatrack seems to largely get ignored within hip hop community. Destroys Digitakt in almost every area!

not in immediacy or sound imho

but octatrack is a hiphop beast

It's not a question of which is most similar to the SP-1200 in terms of features and whatnot but of what machine is now the go-to one for beatmaking, the same way the SP was back then. So all those listed devices are relevant to discuss even though they work very differently. At the end of the day, they all make beats.

Yeh takes a little longer to get fluent on OT but worth it. I haven’t heard any DT stuff that floored me in terms of sound. And OT has this kind of dope very slightly cassette sound feel to it that is ideal for classic hip-hop. But it’s negligible either way imo ( in terms of DT sounding cleaner/more modern, or OT sounding lofi... No listener would notice difference between jams made on either unit ;)

Dunno.. MPC was pretty popular back then too and the Live seems pretty popular now too in beatmaking community. Ton of boxes to choose from today. Don't think there's really any modern 'go to' that a significant majority of people are using now... Ableton + Push2 is probably the thing found in the most amount of studios :/

I would't say the Digitakt has a more modern sound at all.. It has an EQ bump in the low freq and very clear high freq (possible a little bump up there too). the Octactack is more flat and transparent in comparison.

And the no listener would know the difference is the same with all these apps and beatboxes.. but its not about the listener is it

  • Korg ES-1 was the new 1200.

I meant a more modern hip hop sound on the DT. Not modern in general. Tho maybe the same thing?! God knows! OT just naturally sounds (very) slightly more '36 chambers'... ;) To me anyway. All pretty minor and subjective tho :)
