@JohnnyGoodyear I've been negligent in letting so much time lapse before reviewing your entry. Sorry, we'll leave my excuses to one side for now.

The intro is a beating heart - if that was not deliberate then it was certainly one of Eno's hidden intents, brilliant bit of sonic metaphor. I love the feel of the song, it's a mixture of hope and sadness, honey and warm milk.

It's also a glimpse into your past, it sounds like you lived your excesses well into your forties, and that you pushed them to extremes - there's got to be a wealth a material for you to pick through there in your history, just trying to figure out what drove you to the limit and beyond. If human fallibility is a theme to fascinate endlessly, it helps to have plenty of one's own foibles for inspiration. We should spend an evening or two in an English pub discussing this over several beers, if your doctor will allow it.

I think for some reason the New Year has put mortality at the front of your thoughts, or maybe this is something that happens to you every new year, but anyway, definitely don't go away because I think you've still got much to say, and we need to hear it.

It is a lovely track, brought a tear to my eye just now - Mrs Monzo's mum passed away yesterday. Don't go away indeed.

Let me know what pub you're going to, and I'll get the first round in.

Tough stuff for Mrs. Monzo. Honest condolences. Mum loss is a long, sad thing (be kind to her, as I know you surely will be....).

Thank you Richard. That is a very thoughtful and kind review. I appreciate it. You're absolutely right about the heartbeat. Thought it was probably too obvious, but then if it's not obvious what's the point etc. Usual confusion (I have) between obscurity and otherwise.

I suppose I do have stuff to mine, but then I honestly believe we all do. If you think, you feel, and if you feel you can hardly express the wonders and disaster of life adequately and thus, clumsily or beautifully, our efforts at art.

I don't drink beer anymore, I don't allow myself it, but we shall or should certainly find a pub or similar to chatter away in at some point. Happy to buy the second round :)

EDIT: Oh, and also, while not very noticeable probably, this was the first tune I used a bus in Auria for. You encouraged me long ago to and while I am still a novice I found it easier than I imagined and very useful. Opens up all kinds of possibilities. So thanks for that as well...

    I reside in Kendal.

Brilliant. Please go directly and gift this to your Chamber of Commerce etc.

    Distance wise or emotionally? :D
Yeah, logistics would kill the non-virtual get together.

We are literally at opposite ends of England. Both equally picturesque places but so far apart we probably have different climates...

Cheers boss. Doesn't help that there's a load of other pressure on us at the moment as well, but we'll get through it no doubt.

Certainly a different climate here (Wales). Need to find someone who lives in the middle of that map, then we'll all pile over with our iPads and bottles of beer.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear Another nice meditative piece. I got the melancholy and the aching from this one even without the contextual information you included as introduction. There is a rapid fire feeling to the way the words come tumbling out that I quite like--it does feel a bit like Dylan (Bob, that is) in that sense. But instead of the marathon 5-minute treatises, your truncated songs give the sense of a burst of density, just enough time to chew, and then done. I can see how stringing together a few of these short bursts could make for an effective song cycle. Effective arrangement on this one--for some reason I pictured a lighthouse with a foghorn warning sailors of the rocks underneath with the "blare" at the start of the bars where you sing and light fluttering thereafter.

  • @rickwaugh The video and the music go together perfectly. I love that you did the drawings in iOS--they are nicely rendered and interesting stylistically. The composition is strong and I got a strong early '80s vibe to the arrangement --agree with others that there is a cinematic flourish to your work. Enjoyed it!

  • @Shaken&;Stirred the feel of this one is fantastic. I love the juxtaposition of the crybaby guitar with the jittery 808 style drums. It's unique but it works well, especially given the subject matter. The lyrics are good--the one that popped out at me was "She said,”let me pour you slowly down the back of my spoon..." Your phrasing accents the line perfectly and it explodes out of the mix as a result. Your stuff is always impressive; this month's tune is a cut above.

hey man, thanks for the kind words! I'm very pleased with your impressions of it. the line you quoted is my favorite as well. Cheers!

  • Here is a piece I did last night on the couch whilst cuddling with my wifey. Apps used were Fugue Machine controlling Model 15, Drums from Future Drummer. All mixed in AUM and effects were EOS2, RP-1, replicant 2, dubstation 2.

  • @DefRobot Nice track. Reminds me of some old Beatles. Really enjoyed it.

  • @DefRobot I dug the intro of this tune quite a bit, the piano chords with the backwards effect set the tone/subject matter immediately. Vocals are well done throughout, per usual. I think the arrangement generally works, although the guitars seemed a bit forward in the mix at times (could be my headphones?). The only other niggle is that the bass guitar part seemed a little out of time in the middle section. Enjoyed the tune!

  • @studs1966 First, that bass line! When it comes in at the beginning, I started laughing because it's so good--even got my ass shaking in the office chair. The guitar line brings the chocolate to the peanut butter. Vocal is pro to the bone. Only thing that jumped out at me as a negative was the crash cymbal at 2:35 that was loud and seemed to disappear unnaturally. Everything else sounded spot on to me.

  • @fattigman I'm in awe. The song is good, you nail the vocal, the lyrics are inspiring... But the video! I could gush for way too long about how much I loved this video. The family in the kitchen at the beginning and end--the way you glance over towards the table from time to time. And you shouldn't apologize for the ending--you should amplify it because I found it to be perfect. (Appreciated the production notes and am glad to see someone using Group the Loop effectively.) I've put a gold star next to this one for the 2018 SOTMC video awards.

  • @trackedout I now have made my affection known for the shambling indie rock stuff that you have nearly perfected in the last few months. The tone of this one is pitch perfect--sorta falling apart but never completely. The vocal conveying the slacker edge that works perfectly with the lyrics. I'm a big fan of the little known band The Grifters and someone could have slipped this onto a Grifters album in the early to mid 90s and no-one would blink. And that's a high compliment! Only thing I found a little weird is the stereo effect on the vocal (or maybe it's the stereo mix?)--it creates an interesting space but it felt a little high fidelity for the mix/arrangement? I'm not suggesting mono by any stretch but it felt a little too strong to me somehow. Anyway, crackin submission this month.

Cheers for that matey. Maybe when they send it away to the Pros for Mastering, they might be able to sprinkle some magic over it? ;)

  • @gmslayton, cool little tune. Especially love the percussion, the little abrupt zzzzzzps were great. But it needs development. It’s like the start and end of something, that needs some transformation in the middle, and a bit more melody. Mix is great, everything in it’s place.

  • @lukesleepwalker Thank you very much. I’m working far away from home, feeling a bit lonely, and after reading this you just made my day

    Hi all!
This is live performance I did for #jamuary2018. It’s live and I kind of improvised so it’s not very well planned. I had an idea how I wanted to start the song but no idea how to end it.

Yet another Frigging great track........ All I can say, is what they say here in Cyprus(in Greek)............ "BOMBA!!!!"......... Top job fella.... ;)

This track has just been signed with Disco Balls Records (Don't know when its being released? Been doing a lot of remixes for them over the Christmas period)..... Yes it's a bit long(Again!.... Sorry, i cant help it....... But you don't have to listen to it all...... :D ) Enjoy!..... ;)

nice job on this - very clean mix as usual. Bass line and bass tone are perfect, and I like the solid kick sound as well. Good dynamics too, well done!

As a little kid growing up in Vietnam in the 80s I remember my mom had a friend and at his house they always played western music. The only time I heard western music back then was at his house and the music sounded like yours. Disco, happy vibes, brings back memories from my childhood. I love this track, it’s the kind of tracks that makes me happy. Very nice production too.

on the first listen, my brain couldn't quite sort out the jumbled parts, but on subsequent listens, I was able to get more of a handle on it. I do like the breakdown part the best, cool stuff going on there. I was reminded of Joy Division a bit, not in the way it sounds, but in the way it feels like it might fall apart at any moment they way many of their tunes do (to me). I think some additional EQ'ing and maybe some hard panning might help give some of the parts their own space in the mix.

Iron Maiden t-shirt? Loved this! very fun to watch, and the song sounds great! you are very talented as well, I like you voice. lots of effects on the vocals, but it fits perfectly. I enjoyed the "live performance" aspect of it too. very well done!

I agree with Rick, this sounds like it could be the start of something cool, with some more development. There's not a lot going on in the low end here, maybe some deep bass in spots might change it up a bit and add some additional interest. I too do a lot of music production work on the couch next to my wife.
