    @JohnnyGoodyear I've been negligent in letting so much time lapse before reviewing your entry. Sorry, we'll leave my excuses to one side for now.

    The intro is a beating heart - if that was not deliberate then it was certainly one of Eno's hidden intents, brilliant bit of sonic metaphor. I love the feel of the song, it's a mixture of hope and sadness, honey and warm milk.

    It's also a glimpse into your past, it sounds like you lived your excesses well into your forties, and that you pushed them to extremes - there's got to be a wealth a material for you to pick through there in your history, just trying to figure out what drove you to the limit and beyond. If human fallibility is a theme to fascinate endlessly, it helps to have plenty of one's own foibles for inspiration. We should spend an evening or two in an English pub discussing this over several beers, if your doctor will allow it.

    I think for some reason the New Year has put mortality at the front of your thoughts, or maybe this is something that happens to you every new year, but anyway, definitely don't go away because I think you've still got much to say, and we need to hear it.

    It is a lovely track, brought a tear to my eye just now - Mrs Monzo's mum passed away yesterday. Don't go away indeed.

    Let me know what pub you're going to, and I'll get the first round in.

    We should actually do this. One day we will.

    Who amongst the SOTMC lives in England? Would be cool to have a beer sometime!
    I reside in Kendal

    In a tent on a beach in Wales.....and then here:

    Not far from you Def. How’s your moshing mate? :)

    Sadly, my moshing days are long gone!
    I’ve heard good things about Rebellion though. Buzzcocks one of the headliners and not too far to travel.
    Might look into it :)

  • @Shaken&;Stirred thank you very much. I used to listen to Iron Maiden a lot when I was a teenager in the late 80’s and begining of 90’s. It’s my favorite band from that period.

  • Episode 6: Morecambe platform

    The sultry, awful misa Shit turned about the corner. Small, shoeless children back-hand saluted him -- overstretching his swollen all curt ear with syrupy taunts.

    /Meanwhile the boy Pissed, born of majestic light, hovered into the line of fire, the air surround shuddered as his angelic voice, pure, untainted, s. overwhelmed..

  • @rickwaugh this one is quite a bit more atmospheric than your usual classically influenced compositions - the more modern sounds lend it a different, and to my ears much more interesting, flavour.

    The tonality still has a classical feel, but with the non-classical instrumentation it makes for an interesting juxtaposition, a more creative meld of ideas and genres. Not sure what scale the melody is based on, but I like the flavour it gives the piece. A most promising change of direction In my opinion.

    Broadstairs, Kent. Closer to Belgium than Kendal unfortunately :)

    Broadstairs. Closer to Belgium than Kendal.

    Brilliant. Please go directly and gift this to your Chamber of Commerce etc.

    Distance wise or emotionally? :D
    Yeah, logistics would kill the non-virtual get together.

    We are literally at opposite ends of England. Both equally picturesque places but so far apart we probably have different climates...

    Contrariwise it would be walking distance along the shiny sands from where my iPads reside

    But I don’t think our local authority would welcome being advised that they were closer to Belgium than Kendal.

  • @richardyot I realise that you are busy with rebuilding your house, but I noticed that SoundCloud hasn't been updated for a couple of months and it isn't linked to on the first page of this thread.
    Have you decided not to go with SoundCloud now?

    Have you decided not to go with SoundCloud now?

    Yes, sorry. I barely have time to listen to the entries (or create my own), so I haven't been able to keep up with the housekeeping. My entire life is eaten up in work of one form or another, and it's really hard to find the time to devote to SOTMC, so I'm having to do what I can to keep things going. Maybe in a few months time when things are less manic I will reinstate the SC stuff.

    From a selfish perspective, I'm keeping to the schedule because I want to keep at it and improve, but right now it's a very big challenge just to keep up with this thread (I hardly read the rest of the forum) and to create my own entry.

  • That’s what I imagined. Would it be possible for you to delegate the soundcloud updating to someone else you trust on the forum?

    If you're volunteering then yes - I can PM the login details.

    Bugger, I walked into that one! Thought it would put you off using the word ‘trust’..

    I’m pretty busy too but could manage with an accomplice if anyone else would volunteer to help?

  • @Shaken&;Stirred Very nice track, love the bluesy swampy vibe, and the guitar is really something.

    Only thing I'm not mad on is the digital drums, I think that's a personal thing though, I've never liked those sounds, even in electronica.

    Nice slow and brooding intro, that sets the stage for the guitar as it snakes in (haha), and the intro solo is great - it could have even been a little longer before the vocal comes in.

    Good vocal melody, well sung, and overall a well-produced song.

    Thanks @richardyot. Just A minor natural in this one. While I'll be doing more guitar compositions now. (new one in the can for February,) I'm about ready to give up on trying to do my midi pieces with classical instrument samples. IOS just doesn't have the tools for it. And with so many wonderful synth samplers, there is an endless variety of textures available. Stylistically, I'll still be all over the map. ;)

  • @fattigman your voice is amazing - one of the very best I've ever heard on SOTMC, really like the performance.

    The fact that it's done live in your kitchen while the rest of the family are having dinner, and that dad singing by the counter is just the most normal thing in the world, makes it even sweeter.

    Terrific stuff.

    Thanks for your feedback, and kind words! yeah, the electronic drums is where the styles clash on this one, which is something that I was going for, but totally understand not embracing those sounds. A week ago I would have said I was bored with the acoustic drum vibe, but I'm currently remixing a track I used session drummer on, and with some parallel compression across the kit, sounds really good. Now I want to use it more, so I guess nothing is ever off the table. Thanks again!

  • OK, right down to the wire, my entry for the month. It's throwaway and experimental but I still haven't missed a month yet.

    Like the sound of throwaway and experimental. Will have a listen later when I get home.

    Also, if you would like to PM me the SOTMC soundcloud details I will try and make the time to bring it up to date.

    Fab production. Loved every second of it. The Vocoding was excellent. In fact the track wouldn't sound out of place in a movie soundtrack. Nice one matey. ;)

    @Jocphone has updated the SC account - I would put this at the start of the thread but the post is no longer editable (you can only edit posts for one week now).

    Well done. Some of the boys were getting a little nervous down here in the bunker, but I never doubted you :)

    This is fun and nice. Really like the freshness of the production. For some reason, no idea why, I can really hear the estimable Linda Thompson singing over this. Would like some insight as regards which of the usual suspects you co-opted for the vocoding. Of course I'm going to ask/say/tell that you should have used it for a verse or two in there or a distracted soulful robot poem, but it's all there for later.

    Keep on if you can :)

    Thanks - the vocoder I used is Voloco. The only two vocoders I like (and I own them all) are Voloco and iVoxel. iVoxel is better but takes longer to set up, so when I'm in a hurry I use Voloco. There's two tracks of vocals using two different presets (one being Star Duet, and the other I can't remember), plus some additional processing on the vocal bus (Pro Q, a smidge of Saturn, PSP Echo, and Volcano).

    I do have a more fully fleshed out song almost ready for February, in fact it was my January song but just not quite ready, so at the last minute I decided to knock this one out so I could give the other song the time it needed.

  • Sorry for lagging behind with reviews. Vid by COP Monday... that’s if the two young local upstart rappers who borrowed the mic and lights return them in one piece. Mmmm. :)

  • I think it is still January somewhere in the world. Didn’t get this one where I wanted it but the goal is “just keep chuggin” so out the door it goes...

    Top production, & nicely executed. Fab stuff matey. ;)

  • Breathing

    @JohnnyGoodyear - New Year (Don't Go Away)

    Like the low bubbling ricocheting sounds and the minimal, but effective, percussion. The whole stripped back feel is pretty effective and you have have found the right balance for this song I think. I do find the phasing effect on the voice a bit distracting. Guessing that part of the reason it was applied was to add some edge to the singing and bring it out front but, with the palette you employ for the song it feels like you should let the vocals breathe a bit more. Maybe it's a product of tensing up while singing, maybe it's a desire to to sound a little mournful but whether that or some other reasons I just would like the experience that spurs the writing to be carried through to the voice. Of course this is only a minor observation. It's another excellent song added to your backlog. When are we going to see the Album?

    @rickwaugh - Compulsions

    I get the idea from your tunes and from reading your posts on the forum that your main preoccupations are with music theory, with composing melody, harmonies etc.. in a fairly classical sense. There may be a great tune in Compulsions but it is hard to get past the synthesizer sounds and the lack of any feel for rhythm. In writing that I feel pretty bad but I think you aren't doing yourself any favours by using thin and tinkly little sounds and a plodding drum track with little variation. Your tunes may be great but you need to give the audience a bit more to get them to come along for the ride.

    @Shaken&;Stirred - Snakebite

    Going to resist the urge to talk skinheads and drinking because I really like how this song kicks off. The opening sounds really crackle and I'm picturing the edge of the desert, dusk approaching, a real sense of menace as that Ry Cooderish guitar kicks in.

    I have noticed that in trying to make recommendations to each other in the SOTMC, under the guise of offering another ear as it were, that we gravitate heavily towards the normal. Have heard many times, suggestions that would make a song sound more conventional or mainstream in some sense. As an example, and I'm sure @richardyot won't mind me using one of his comments for this, earlier in this thread Richard remarked that he didn't think the electronic drums fit this song, yiou agreed with him and I was about to make a comment along the same lines when it got me thinking about this very thing. It is something that I have pondered several times. I think I did the same thing to Johnny G earlier in this post. So I'm going to try harder to take these songs and the choices made as valid choices in their own right. THe drums may come across as a little incongruous for the supposed style of this song but at the same time it could be they make sense in the the musical journey you are embarking on.

    Now, if there is one change I would make personally :) it would be to let that opening atmosphere linger a bit longer, maybe throw in some of the echoey vocals to interplay with the intro guitar. Otherwise it's beautifull constructed song with many interesting turns and I do enjoy your songwriting.

    @DefRobot - Innocent Time

    You have a great ear for a catchy tune Mr. Robot! Love the pacing, changes where it is supposed to and keeps me listening. Can't find much in the way of suggestions everything is slightly but perfectly wrong on ways that delight my ear.

    Cor, I'd forgotten how much work goes into going through SOTMC entries and writing about them all. Have done almost half of the January playlist on the SOTMC soundcloud:

    Will try and do some more over the weekend.

  • My favorite part of @Shaken&;Stirred song was the juxtaposition of the electronic drums with the guitar work--I really dig thinking outside the box like that and, to my ear, it works great. When it comes to subjective things like art, there really is no "right" answer. Except in this case, where I'm right.
