I'd like to say Bowie but really I've always wondered what society would be like with a healthy john Lennon added

Not to be the cynic here, but it’d probably be more or less the same. The only difference with Lennon being alive is a larger catalogue of superior songs that’d continue to inspire future generations of songwriters. SO, other than far better music existing in the current music scene, mankind would be doomed to repeat the same stupid mistakes it always manages to repeat.

I could also handle another 3-4 MBV records.

New MBV album is "100% certain" this year according to Kevin Shields

  • Having new music from Jon Lord at his peak would be incredible. With MK2 Deep purple.

  • Ian Curtis.

Prince, in recent times. But it doesn’t matter who it is. I’d be more interested in knowing how I got the power to perform miracles. What else can I do? Dibs on time travel!

I noticed Roy Orbison was touring again so I checked the ticket prices.
People paying close to €80 including booking fees to see a hologram, can't make this stuff up!

  • Hendrix without hesitation or consideration of anyone else.

Not saying he alone would save the planet for us, but I think as much as anyone he would have influenced many people in different ways on top of just providing that entertainment/comfort factor with him still around.

    My grandfather.

Care to tell us more? Interested.

He was French Canadian / First Nations. Left home when he was twelve and worked in a lumber mill and an asbestos mine. Did a stint as a log rider. Eventually worked as a caretaker in the school system then decided in the 60s to move to the country and live off the land, which he did for about twenty years. I loved going fishing with him. Whenever I hear fiddle music I get misty eyed and wish I was old enough to have recorded him. Thankfully there are recordings of my Uncle Gus, who my forum alias is named after.

Nice memories. And Gus IS a name of greatness!

Oh yeah. Many times, I’ve wondered what music he might’ve made.

  • I know this will be a controversial choice. but...
    Michael Jackson.

  • Mark Linkous, AKA Sparklehorse, commited suicide in 2010. If you haven't heard the album It's A Wonderful Life -
you should, it's one of my favourite albums of the 2000s.

Elliott Smith. Committed suicide in 2003, I still remember the day I read that news. His best album is Either/Or, an amazing record IMO.

And less recent, but Gram Parsons actually made country music sound cool, that's gotta be a towering achievement in anyone's book.

Are you not counting The Eagles? ;)

  • Elliott Smith, Jeff Buckley or Ian Curtis. I often wonder what direction Joy Division would have gone if Ian Curtis was still alive...

I love Take It Easy, and Lyin' Eyes, both really great songs (I have a country playlist that I listen to as a guilty pleasure, has everything from Johnny Cash to Kenny Rogers). Gram Parsons was more melancholic than the Eagles though, the Eagles at their best were feelgood and breezy, Gram Parsons at his best was more understated and mellow IMO. Take It Easy vs Brass Buttons - both great songs, but very different feeling.

    Country & western

I can never remember where folk here are based, but if in UK check out Eagles tribute band Talon. Absolutely wonderful renditions of classics, and a guaranteed great night out for not much cash.

  • I simply can't choose...but it's ok, none of them have gone away, their music lives on forever !

  • I certainly wish that Bowie and Lou Reed were still walking the earth, but they did thankfully leave huge bodies of work.
I wish that Chris Whitley had been given more time to create much more great work.

The first live band I ever saw was Parsons' teenage band the Shilos. I was five and at an auto show in South Carolina with my dad.

    Cool claim to fame.

  • Frank Zappa and his band from the late 70s
Any recent composers doing similar stuff?

Ha! It was almost another 20 years before I found out that was Parsons' band. IIRC, they made some of their early recordings at the studio of the local bible college's radio station.
