  • @anomieholiday you mention stage name. How does one come up with said stage name? My youtube channel is TheAudioDabbler but I don't want to put music out under than name. Most people know be by Mitch and since thats my name, that would be ok.

A friend of mine and I are also trying to write some scores for games and stuff so we would need a name for that as well. Trying to come up with a media/creative arts conglomerate name is hard. I hate naming things, I enjoy the branding part of it, if I had a name.

  • @gmslayton, I'm sure this isn't what you had in mind, but https://www.name-generator.org.uk/band-name/ is loads of fun. Google "random band name generator" and waste an afternoon.

  • If you need a new name, I highly recommend something as unique as you can make it. I made up my artist name, anyone searching for Tarekith with always get linked to only me. No confusion, no competition.

Far better than when I was using “rEalm”, which was problematic for those exact reasons.

  • ^ I did wonder about your name. I wouldnt have guessed it isnt your real name. Unique is kinda key f'sure and also tricky. Result!
@studs1966 congrats on getting noticed, your stuff is right up my street.

  • Real name is Erik. :#

I’d recommend keeping an eye on potential search engine results, associated with the name too.

Not completely sure now why I settled on Horse Gas, but searching for it in Google and YouTube tends to bring up a whole range of non-musical associations.

I’m competing with pony farts and equine wind products, basically.

I made this whole album on my iPhone and its been doing really well actually
    https://open.spotify.com/album/5iQDdH5HQsbdlo8Q1Q89H9

it's a good album - full of ideas and real songs, very original, few (if any at all) clichees.
Who cares about the least significant bit of sound/mix quality in that case ? ;)
    Imho more inportant:
you're on every channel with results from search engines (photo, video, music)
    well done :+1:

ps: I really like the 'simple kind' approach of the mixes, that still features a nice sound quality - so the whole thing comes over as made with care/love/passion (you probably get the idea...)

with a bit of polish and some promotion I might be able to make up to £0.08 per month, via streaming/plays on

What a coincidence! I just got my Reverbnation notice that I made 7 cents last month from streaming!

    Livin' the dream:

youre definitely raking it in, lol. I made $.0.01 this month. The most Ive ever made from a song from streaming was $1.88 for a little over 1500 streams. Admittedly I didnt promote the song at all, lol.

That depends, do you want fake friends or people listening to your music?

People listening to my music (obviously), who doesn't? It's just that the difference is noticeable (Spotify: 3.4 k followers, Instagram: 306 followers, Facebook Page: 2.5 K likes). But at least now i know where to target my instagram promoted posts, after looking at the demographic insights in my Spotify account.

I really liked that album. You are a smooth mix of Lou Reed and Deer Tick in my ears. I´ll put it on repeat on spotify now!

Thanks @Telefunky and @marcuspresident :) I agree about mix quality. I'm not married to lofi but I definitely think content > mix quality. IPhone is such a great way to record a record while traveling. I'm lucky to live in a time where it's easy and affordable to make an album.

  • So, I took the plunge and signed up with DistroKid. I got the Label, because I have a few friends that I can put their music up as well. I didn't realize that in order to split the money, everybody needs a paid distrokid account. They will gladly send you a 50% off code if you are receiving splits but still. Now I am thinking, why did I go for the label if they are going to have to pay for an account to earn splits? Maybe thats one way they make their money. I do wonder if they get that discount every year if they are just receiving splits.

I guess I can put out stuff under a couple different names, maybe score type music under one and then more traditional type music under the other. Not sure yet.

Sounds a bit naff, since you pay more for a label account.

I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet (hectic week), but I’ll most likely get a standard account with them.

I seem to have rejoined my old band today, so might suggest they get one too.

  • An interesting read on using blockchain technology for smart contracts and music distribution, by Imogen Heap.
    https://medium.com/humanizing-the-singularity/smart-contracts-for-the-music-industry-3e641f87cc7

Btw, I see Zoe Keating mentioned down there, and she happens to be the one who provided those lovely cello samples in Thumbjam!

  • I'm surprised that there is no mention of Amuse. It's a mobile service, just used I for free and you get the royalties. You can import from Audioshare and go: Amuse Music Distribution by Amuseio AB
    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/amuse-music-distribution/id1160922922?mt=8

There are more free ones too: Music Kickup and Freshtunes. They kind of do the pay what you want as far as basic distribution and then pro stay features.

  • I'm a newbie, I have 2 songs made with iOS only: https://open.spotify.com/artist/5CBykav5ptN0kWpT1nvRQB
@soundshaper I listened to som e of your stuff, really cool man. You did that with iOS only? I have never made music with anything but iOS so want to know what it is capable of. Your stuff sounds really good.

Hey thanks! Only some of the parts are iOS synths or effects. Everything is recorded and mixed through an analog console with lots of outboard analog gear.

  • @gmslayton It literally took me 2 years of deep thought to come up with the stage name "slowflood".

There's references to a lot of my infuences contained within. One obvious one is "Floodlands" by The Sisters of Mercy, a long time favorite of mine. It's also a nod to Godflesh's Avalanche Studios, and a general concept of the slowed down thick and surreal sound of Houston chopped and screwed rap and beats. A random interviewer described my sound as "dark ambient lean music" (lean being a reference to the codiene drink that's popular here) and I took that and ran with it as well.

The main thing to remember is that your stage name is your branding and something you're going to be wearing as your battle flag. While "slowflood" may not be the best name ever, it's certainly not bad and means a lot to me. I use cobalt blues and black for a stark two-color palette, and found a particular font I use for everything as well. I also incorporate a lot of occult/satanic imagery, mostly just for the hell of it (pun not intended) in a Venom/Motley Crüe kind of way.

Even without my name on something, you can easily recognize my art style - I've found the best promotion is to do a bunch of 4x4 art prints and stickers, and bring maybe 50 out to where I want to flyer with prints and stickers repeating maybe 2 or 3 times in that stack. The first person in a group takes it because that's what you do when someone sticks something out to put it in your hand, the second person is curious because it looks "different" then suddenly everyone in the group wants one. When I walk away, people realize they are different and start trading them and sharing them with each other - boom! Noticed! I spent a lot of time seeing my promo shit on the floor of venues before I came up with that tactic.

Basically, what I would do is think of some words and concepts that seem nice and meaningful to you, and go about your life with those in the back of your head. Eventually you'll come up with something nice and punchy.

It took me a long time to come up with the name, lots of gigging to get a stage persona nailed down, etc. I prefer "cryptic and open to interpretation" over anything else.

It's just as much work doing a stage name, branding, stage persona and all that comes with it as it is making music, although it does give me a chance to work on art (I might not be great but if you saw the first thing I ever did compared to my product now...) when I can't really get a tune to work right.

  • Amuse here as well, I’m happy enough with it. Haven’t promoted anything mostly just wanted to get my music on iTunes / Play Store and Spotify. I’ve uploaded a single and an EP, the process is quite painless. Delivery to stores happens on a Friday and there’s usually a minimum of a two week lead time to your uploads going live.

  • Yes - tryed Distrokid.
    Link:
    https://distrokid.com/hyperfollow/rkuhn/fhd0
If the link doesnt function: R.Kuhn „Chinese Works“ - it‘s world music, no 4-on-the-floor.

    Same here.

Also in AppleMusic, iTunes, Deezer and should be more...

  • I'm a dabbler/hobby music maker, but have a couple of tracks that could be used in yoga (my wife teaches  ).
After reading this, I'm going to try Amuse. I was formerly going to try Distrokid, but I like the idea of FREE and then see what comes of it. I can keep my $20 for pizza this Friday

  • My album “Electric Ian” is on Sprotify and Apple Music etc, but I’m sure that’s not news to anyone by now. Needs more promotion. Well, any.

Do you think iPhone owners are more likely to do Apple Music and android owners Spotify? Also what of google music and amazon music as streaming services? I’m intrigued by the YouTube music app I keep getting forewarned about each time I go on YouTube these days.
