It's commendable that they've given users the ability to select the legacy engine in the quest to save CPU cycles, but, at least to my ears, the new engine sounds noticeably better: rich, lush, and wonderfully non-harsh. Fantastic! And AU!

The selection of amazing AU synths (Model D, Mood, Zeeon, Kauldron, Kaspar, KQ Dixie, etc.) is getting a bit ridiculous. :)

Is anybody running LayR on an Air2? Wondering about the performance since it seems pretty demanding. But sure would like to be able to use it if it runs good.

It works well (All my presets were made on Air2). Amount of AU versions on Layr on Air2 at once will depend on the presets. Remember part of what makes Layr so great is that one performance patch is in effect a whole bunch of individual synths layered up to give complex and evolving sounds. If you have a whole bunch of performance patches running at once that is going to hit CPU issues eventually and you will need to bounce tracks to audio in your DAW if you want to stack 10 Layr patches into one track.

    Thanks for the info. :)

  • I know the real buzz is about the AU3 version - and it is awesome - for those who want to run several Performance patches using LayR, say Synth lead, pad and keys, then consider running them in the IAA version. You can load a Performance patch assign the midi channel to 1 and the audio out to 1. Go to load another performance but hit Append... first, select a Performance and it will load along with the first Performance- assign your midi and audio out to 2. You can then access the individual audio outs from your host app. One note you will have dry outputs and will have to assign individual fx chains.

This really helps on the CPU demand if you have an older machine. I often run an IAA LayR as a foundation synth with multiple instruments and an AU3 version as say a lead.

The new PDF manual covers this - I have probably not explained it that well.

  • Hello everyone, thanks for all your comments, just for your info ...

Typically, Sod's law came into play ( sod really hates me ) ... So just to let you know ...

Cubasis updated while LayR was in App store review and that update broke LayR audio unit in cubasis. A fix is in the pipe but might take a few days to go through ... ( sigh )

Any chance the fix will fix the same issue in MultitrackStudio?
Either way, great update, keep up the good work!

  • Sounds now really interesting for me. Some of the performances in the demos sounds really lush, defined and juicy.
I´m a bit scared to just buy it to find out it might not my thing, especially on iPhone.
    IOS needs demos to try!!

I tried loading in AUM right after updating. No instruments or performances.
Killed AUM and launched LayR standalone solved that.
If you are updating, it is probably best to start it up standalone. That brings up a dialog regarding sound engine and then restores patches ...

Ok thanks for that info. It’s a milestone update, so I guess patches will follow if bugs are reported.

Not a bug I think. Just needs to be primed in standalone first. BTW, loving this as an AU :) So far it's running about 30 to 40 percent CPU in AUM with one instance on my 1st gen iPad Pro. Handles very dense midi streams from TC-Data with ease.

I love TC-DATA - gotta try out your tricks :)

  • Was the arp/sequencer thingy reworked some? Seems to make a lot more sense now. Not sure if I'm simply just "getting" it, or if the interface for that part has been reworked and is more intuitive now.

Also, was asking about the Pro/iPhone layout settings earlier in the thread because when I first got LayR, I didn't know there was a layout setting and ended up using it for a long time with the multi-page iPhone layout settings instead of the larger screen settings. Just want to make sure I've got it set correctly now. I don't see the setting there anymore, but as I recall it was a little bit hidden before.

  • yeah, is there something different with the arp?

Agh. very cool. arp works on separate track. Sound great with Audiodamge Grind and Kosmknaut and Filterstation .

Yes.....that´s a nice sound here. Would fit as intro to the next season of American Horror Story or so :)

  • I've grown to really have a greater appreciation of this synth from when I first bought it. I liked it then... but the depth it's capable of is astonishing. And, the interface appears to be easier to understand now. I'm not sure if that's because of all the interface tweaks in this fresh update, or if it's just seeing it with new eyes after not playing with it for a good while.

Now that it's AUv3, you can easily mix and match multiple presets with fx added in AUM, etc. to sort of craft your own sound without having to even create it from scratch.

For those on the fence, the brilliant presets alone in this app are worth more than the price of admission.

  • Are there any vids for using the arp? Always been stumped by that one.

Are all the Bryce Beasley, Andy Garman and Red Sky presets part of LayR when you purchase it or are those extra add-ons? Thanks!

They're all included and there have been more added with this update too. All equally as impressive. Seriously, as I've mentioned before... even if you don't feel up to diving into the hardcore sound synthesis design stuff that this app is capable of... the presets included are worth the asking price alone. And I'm just about as spend thrifty as anyone.

Yes! I just got Layr this afternoon (thanks to Tim at Discord contest!). It's so beautiful. And the preset selection is overwhelming - I've only sampled maybe 15-20 and they're all wonderful.
Great synth for sure. I'll be using it a lot.

It is truly overwhelming when you start realising you can combine any of the presets with any other of the presets, into fantastic "performances". It opened my eyes quite a bit to synthesis actually (I'm originally a guitarist and synth preset tweaker), and became the trigger for me to get Syntorial as well. :)

  • LayR just got updated to v.1.2.1
Fixes initialisation problems in some(?) AU hosts.

    Welche?

Favorite comment on the internet so far.

  • Great app so far.

Just noticed that in the AU Arps are not triggered using the GarageBand keyboard (you have to use the keyboard built into the AU). However in Cubasis it works fine (using Cubasis’ keyboard). Is this a bug?

I "think" this is a bug in Garage Band, I've reported it as such to Apple anyway.

Since they announced support for MPE GB's keyboard appears to be stuck in MPE mode. Every note you play on GB's keyboard is output on a different MIDI channel. Of course, LayR's Arp sequencer takes input from a single specified channel. If Apple don't fix this I might add an OMNI mode to the Arp input. Meanwhile it's a little more awkward but LayR's internal keyboard does work :)

Okay, I’m glad you are aware of it. Also the GarageBand AU view size management/scaling of Lay-R on iPad 12.9 is excellent. Thanks for that!
