LayR just got a BIG update with AUv3

  • @LivingMemorySoftware - any reason why I don’t see LayR coming up as an AU option in either AUM or Auria on my iPad Air 2 running iOS10.2?

I see it in AUM as an AU on my iPhone that’s running iOS 11. But not on my iOS10 iPad.

On my iPad I’ve tried deleting Layr and reinstalling, as well as rebooting but none of this makes any difference. (It opens fine as standalone by the way).

Any help appreciated because I love the app and having it as a AU in Auria would be amazing!

  • Might be the latest OS that’s needed. All working great for me for both phone and iPad on latest OS.

Oh man that First Love Preset In LayR in amazing!

@LivingMemorySoftware could you confirm this? I don’t really want to update my iPad to iOS11 because I’d lose Alchemy :).

Yeah could be an ios11 thing, I had to update for Rozeta.

Yep, me too (on my iPhone).

But the thing with Layr is it works standalone on iOS10 - so I’m not sure why it isn’t working as an AU

What iPad do you have Matt? I can only run one AU LayR instance on my Air2, so I wouldn’t personally update just for this feature if you can load up one IAA already.

My iPad has never been the same since the update, if it wasn’t for Rozeta (which I love, and use all the time) I wouldn’t have bothered.

LayR AU is overrated.....IAA is where it’s at.

Only kidding. BUT I will say—because I don’t see it mentioned around here all that often—that LayR (IAA) multi-out to 8 separate channels in AUM combined with all the incredible FX apps we have at our disposal is damn near magical.

On the flip side, LayR AU controlled by Rozeta can also be magical.

And I’ve literally contributed nothing to your cause here. Apologies. :|

  • edited April 2018

Currently, LayR AU requires minimum iOS 10.3 but there's every chance I'll drop all support for iOS 10 soon and make it iOS 11 only.

The IAA and stand-alone will continue to work as it is now and should support all the way back to iOS 9.1 ...

I haven't even gotten through the drone presets yet, having just downloaded it. This is a very special synth. Man, do I ever consider myself fortunate to be able to use such wonderful instruments.

You’re in for a treat, my friend. Running LayR in that mode, even if it’s just 3, 6 or 8 channels of basic waveforms, can very quickly become an inspiration playground. Report back.

I can confirm this- the multi-out IAA configuration was so cool that I never really thought AUx3 needed to happen...IAA multiput meant LayR was the other half of the workstation: drum modules, lead, bass, and pad, one-stop shop/playground

what are these drone presets you speak of??

  • Maybe a silly thing to say but ... in your DAW of choice (and in AUM - my choice) - setup a session template with multiple LayR outputs pre-routed to individual channel strips. Saves a lot of time - therefore more time to have fun with LayR in IAA multichannel mode. Awesome synth. I am running 4 channels in AUM each with its own LayR Instrument, each being driven with a Rozeta app of some sort, with AudioDamage FX on Each of the inserts. Drums by Ruismaker driven by Rozeta. 48% on my Pro 12.9 1st gen. Reckon you should be able to run it on an Air 2. If I tried that with AU3s the CPU would fry.

Not as fast as a Pro, but almost - the Pro is only slightly faster processor, but double the RAM allowing for more apps to run at same time. i think there should be a noticeable difference! I came from using my iphone 6s a lot these past several months (because it was faster than my old ipad4) The iphone 6s has the A9 chip. The new ipad I got has the A9x chip and it is noticeable snappier than the iphone. The Pro shouldn't be that much faster than the 2018 ipad... I am actually a little surprised at how well the new ipad is performing so far.

I was watching doug's video for the Layr update last week - when he loaded a second instance of Layr on his Air2, it wasn't capable of handling the 2 instance - AUM was around 90-95%. I tried on the new ipad and was around 55-60% with 2 instances...

    Agree on that Alchemy problem!
I’ve got an “old” iPad Air2 left in my collection of gadgets just to run Alchemy on iOS 10.x...

    Alchemy forever!

  • I see in the discussion here that someone had noticed that LayR is multi-timbral.
That’s why I bought it in the first place, with SampleTank, SoundFont Pro, Roland SOUNDCanvas, Bismark & iSymphonic. Those are the apps I’ve found that has the ability to play multiple midi channels at a time.

Just like my old Roland D-20

I could probably have worked it out. Thing is it barely runs on my Air 2, so it’s not the sort of thing I’d have jumped in to try. Nice to know, but probably something I’ll use more when I get a new device

  • LayR is absolutely a must have synth for the sound, depth and multitbrality.

I think Andy did a great job translating LayR’s GUI into something that is able to scale to a variety of sizes and shapes. No easy task considering LayR’s many functions and pages. I’m particularly fond of the horizontally-scrolling layout, sidebar shortcuts to synth parameters and double-tap to zoom features of the AU.

That said, I treat the AU version as a final destination for recording tasks. For sound design and general exploration I much prefer the full screen environment and navigation of the IAA version.

I haven't seen any issues on this end regarding AU preset saving, BM3, or any other AU weirdness.

If you’ve loaded any of the built-in “Arp / Sequence” presets then you’ve already tried it out! Those rely heavily on LayR’s multitimbral capabilities.

Re: your Air 2 performance. Just curious, have you tried tweaking the global parameters in the main menu of the IAA app? Specifically: switching to the Legacy Engine and changing the audio buffer and max voices settings? Those might help free up some bandwidth.
