Attachment to apps

I’ve been having a good chuck out today! Apps? No! Just stuff I no longer use around the house. It got me thinking about how some people get attached to apps and some almost hoard them!

Took me a long while to get my head around the fact that having hundreds of music apps was actually distracting me from making music! Now I find it easy. Patterning - great app! Doesn’t fit in with my current music making flow....chucked! Gadget - love it! Doesn’t fit in either.....chucked!

Now if only I could chuck chatting on here, I might actually finish one of the songs I’ve started! Lol

  • Who says you have to make songs?
Every time I am just playing around with any music app, I am making music.
It matters not whether I consider it a song, or even record it to capture it.
I am still making music in that moment, and enjoying it tremendously.
Using a wide assortment of apps is an important part of that experience, for myself.

But I get that most people are stuck on creating songs. I guess I am stuck on the experience of creating music in a more immediate, primal sense. Just sharing a different POV. B)

    Yes, this!
I make music every day. Can't remember when I last recorded something.

Sorry to hear you are feeling stuck. What would you rather be doing? ;)

I like to make full songs, but this takes me some time to have inspiration do do something different from the previous finished songs. This can takes weeks or even more. While waiting for that, I always improve my apps knowledge and iOS workflow, testing this app, making sound with that other app, or making songs bases for later. This is music too, just have fun playing and triggering. And I improve my workflow, find some workarounds for some issues, learn to use that synth of those effects, and I will know how to do things when inspiration will be there for the big song. Searching to understand AB or AUM routing while creating is not the best idea. Doing things separately is the key, doing templates too. Even learning thoses things is pure fun for me. At this time I explore Rozeta, I will certainly know what kind of results I can use for my next project. I also only buy and keep apps I like or I’m interested in: those I will not really use, or that will not be an essential part of my sound/workflow, I usually get a refund and delete them.

Taking a shit. But it is stuck. Really sucks. ;)

  • Being space constrained helps sharpen the focus for me ... Auria gone, it’s Cubasis time (yes the FF plugs are great but, space) ... Gadget great but doesn’t fit prevailing mood/workflow so gone.

    Player Unknown Battleground Mobile? Stays.

    I have prioritisation issues. :D

I am going to take this as inspiration. I have a large iPad stuffed to bursting with apps, the vast majority of which I don't use. My rationale (until today) as regards hoarding is that by keeping them tucked away in a fifty different folders I will be aware as and when that piece-of-uncertain-rubbish-I-never-really-used gets an update that suddenly makes it 'must have'. Whereas the truth is 1. this very VERY rarely happens and 2. when it does the forum here is immediately full of chatter about it....so, thank you, I am putting on my pinny, collecting up my axe, and venturing forth into the considerable undergrowth of my own detritus....

Creating a full song is my nirvana that always seems just that bit out of reach. Not that it bothers me. I would just like to finish one before I die lol

I recorded a couple of live jams last night, then realised I’d only used AU apps by Brambos and Audio Damage, which has been the case for a while now. Mood and ReSlice get a look in occasionally, but they’re AU too.

I could probably delete 80% of the music apps on my iPad and not notice the difference.

  • Just one question though how does one deal with nostalgic feelings about a deleted app that you feel compelled to install again after you’ve read something interesting about it on this forum. I have this tendency to reinstall apps and still not use them lol :D :D

Yeah that used to be me too - somehow I’ve hardened up and now heartlessly chuck anything that doesn’t fit the new model :p
