Just one question though how does one deal with nostalgic feelings about a deleted app that you feel compelled to install again after you’ve read something interesting about it on this forum. I have this tendency to reinstall apps and still not use them lol :D :D

Yeah that used to be me too - somehow I’ve hardened up and now heartlessly chuck anything that doesn’t fit the new model :p

The new you that is! Lol
Ok I’ll harden my heart then, thanks for the advice :D

As alluded to earlier, it helps even if songs are not your bag. I sometimes just pretend to be a one man band and jam like a sad lonely git, but I still get more done now I’ve managed to get rid of too many choices.

My next attack is going to be my fx apps - I need less and get to know those I use better.

  • It matters not whether I consider it a song, or even record it to capture it.
I am still making music in that moment, and enjoying it tremendously.

This is a very profound statement and it really resonates with me. Last night I was messing with presets in Addictive Pro (new to me) and accidentally hit the dice (preset randomizer) on an arp preset. I happened upon something that to me was fresh, new and exciting. I had a great thing going for about 15 minutes. Pure joy in creation.

Now, I dearly want to hear that again but it's gone like vapor. But, what a great time with music I had. Had it occured to me to record it in that moment, I'll bet that moment would have been lost.

Yeah I really would like a similar always recording set up that then dumps it all if I don’t save it. One of the Roland workstations used to be able to do this.

Good advice mate! Every once in awhile I say to myself I need to reduce the apps I have that I don’t use. I am a song man though so there are certain apps I use. As of late I’ve hit my stride and have been prolific recording many songs with my acoustic guitar. And I’m even adding other elements and it’s going well and is exciting for me since I’ve done very little to almost no recording at all for many many years.

I may not finish anything, but I got down 20 ideas over the last week. Before I started cutting back the apps, I would regularly get stuck investigating apps to try to find something. Funny thing is, with less, I am finding what I want much quicker.

I know this is not new for many here, but I’ve only recently found that even getting rid of great apps like the Korg ones, helps me focus and have more fun!

I REALLY struggle with cutting FX but I think that's more OK because I do actually flip through a number sometimes, trying this and that, and often settle on something I wouldn't have initially thought of. Not so true for synths and drum machines....

I recorded a couple of live jams last night, then realised I’d only used AU apps by Brambos and Audio Damage, which has been the case for a while now. Mood and ReSlice get a look in occasionally, but they’re AU too.

I could probably delete 80% of the music apps on my iPad and not notice the difference.

Really getting a liking for Mood lately. I’ve not cracked it totally yet, but getting there.

That's one of those AU synths where you can't see any presets. WTF is up with that? I need my presets!

No, I haven't learned yet how to do that (and am perturbed that I should even need to). I'm wondering why the factory presets don't show up on some synths, but do show up on others? Are some developers just lazy/not as good?

  • Attachment to apps may also be attachment to certain points of view. While some will have us believe that those that want AU apps are all repeating zealots, A rather polite AU request has become just an excuse for witch burning and cross carrying, all in the name of their God :'(

  • I did this the other day, actually! It helps that apps can be re-downloaded without purchasing again, unlike hardware (still kicking myself for selling that Roland JU-06!). But when you’ve established your go-to sounds, it’s nice to “clean house” and free up some space with apps you haven’t used in a while.

Mood is awesome. For me it was the best synth release last year. Mood can sound just as good as Zeeon and take things a bit further as well. I’m also a bit of an Apesoft whore, though.

  • I think it’s a bit weird that while they are considered flagship iOS synths, i never use my Moog apps and deleted them recently with no second thoughts. I don’t feel they are as creative as the stuff indie devs make. Also I kind of just hate emulations of synthesizers past.

I admit, I do find the Moog UI style a little fidgety for some reason. Not sure why exactly, but definitely feels that way compared to some other devs’ apps.

But I also have to admit...

mood is up in the top 5 iOS synths for me, competing with the big boys like Model D, Model 15, Zeeon and LayR. I think it's HIGHLY underrated, both for sound quality and sheer power. The apeSoft architecture (LFO any knob) opens up countless possibilities, as do the added FM and sample player. I don't use mood nearly as often as I should, but when I open it up and dive in I'm always reminded how much I love it.

Don't forget about the synth buried in Moebius Lab as well...

  • I was really excited by all the possibilities of AU and AU midi, but have to admit that I’m slightly frustrated with the seemingly slow take up of AU midi and even AU with drum sound apps.

Yeah, getting lots of synths and fx, but sequencers, drum sound apps (both sampled and synth), other AU midi controllers are not seemingly being either understood or seen as a new market.

Come on devs, the market is there for the taking!

    Animoog is hardly an emulation.

That’s the great thing about iOS synths - we have quite good variety to suit all. Shame this can’t be said about some other iOS music making devices (yeah I’m ranting again lol)

  • How many host apps are you guys and gals running now?

    I’ve cut down to 4:

    BM3
    Cubasis
    AUM
    Moebius Lab
