  • Hi,

I am really getting into Quantum this weekend and really enjoying the new UI.
    A couple of questions:
    1. Can we make our own cc midi maps and save them? Presumably they could be saved within a sequence?
    2. Has Ableton start stop sync been implemented?

    Thank you :-)

Yes, thank you! I got that far but I’m interested in practical usage. How would you use these CC mapping’s with Model 15, say? Is it possible to give me a example, please? Thanks!

    1) setup your synth to learn midi ccs - model 15 allows you to enter the CC, but you can detect CCs too
    2) If you want to use my settings, set CC34 to VCF cutoff. CC36 to VCF regen(resonance)
    3) save the CC map to file
    4) Runup Quantum
    5) Press CC button (top left on main panel) to open up the Global CC list (yes you could have lists per sequence too, but lets use just one global list)
    6) CC1 is by default set to cc but the device button shows Standard Midi. Tap this button until it says Moog Model 15. Use the rotary to select 34 - the text says VCF filter freq.
    7) tap the 1 button to activate it(it will light up orange text). Close the panel
Now you have CCs defined but they are not assigned to sequences
8)Press Setup button (at the top) it opens a panel that enables you to connect CC lists to sequences.
9)On the Seq 1 line tap the unlit Global tick button under the Midi CC Controllers section on the left hand side. If you need to go to the list you could tap Edit button, but for now you have the Global CC list assigned to Seq1. Close the panel.

CCs consist of two data parts - a control number (34 in this case) and a value. Its this value that is defined per step in Quantum (much like note, velocity, gate% etc). For certain types of CC (NRPN for example) there are two data values (thats why there is a B button next to the Pick CC button. But for now lets ignore that.

As each step can have up to 16 CCs values assigned to them, you need to pick one of these to display the faders.

    10) Tap the Pick CC button - there will be only one value in the list (if you remembered to make it active) - it says CC1 - cc34 telling you its the first CC of 16 & its assigned as type cc control = 34(i.e. midi CC 34). Select this and the Pick CC button changes to an orange CC1(CC34).

    11) The faders now represent values you want CC34 to send per step - so you could draw these.

    12) When you press play - these CCs will be sent to the midi output (which you should have connected to Model 15 app).
Note: Its possible per device to mute CCs being sent (see Devices/Output panel, and also Options/Playback Options/CC to ensure both are enabled.

So if the above appears complex its because there are up to 16 CCs per step but you don't want all sequence steps to transmit these CCs - so you use Setup to manage the lists.

If you don't need automation via step play (its drawback is that for a 4 step sequence say you can only define 4 different CC values) I suggest using the RT(Realtime panel). This enables you to pick a CC number & type in your own name for it. You then open this panel to send CC data when you move the data rotaries.

    Cool. To answer your questions
    1) The CC Controller Panel settings & mappings are saved with a Quantum bank, but you can't save/load them independantly. I could add a file load/save/share panel to help with this is you want?
The midi CC Learn settings can be saved/loaded this way.

    2) Yes I think so. There is a new option in Ableton Link pop-up called Sync Start/Stop. Enable this and with another app that has this you should be able to start/stop either Quantum or that app and they mirror each other. I tried this with Patterning version 2 - I'm not sure if many other apps have implemented this feature yet.
Quantum can send midi CC or midi mmc or midi clock stop/start too in this way - but again you need to be sure if other apps do the same (e.g. AUM does not send the MMC but it does respond it).

Thank you so much! This is exactly what I needed. I had most but not all of the steps...

Has Ableton start stop sync been implemented?

Yes it's working, testing with AB3 and apeMatrix versions with start/stop Link.

  • Yes. Would be cool if we could save and load CC mappings. Then, at least for hardware (or apps with default CC maps) folks could share them and others could install them like the SquareP sequencer. Or you could more easily take them and add them to the app's defaults occasionally like ModStep does.

I'm really looking forward to "MIDI Capability Inquiry" being officially adopted by the MMA and seeing apps and device put it to use for external control immediately! https://www.midi.org/midi/midi/articles-old/midi-capabilties-inquiry-presentation-at-adc

TL;DR: Apps/Devices can publish their controls and the CCs (etc) assigned to them. Then an app like Quantum doesn't need to even bother with user presets for MIDI control or even 'assign' type systems. And users needn't to give a shit about CCs or NRPNs; Quantum would present a list of control targets (with human names) it got from the target app/device via MCI. CC72 is so 1989.

  • @midiSequencer by the way, I’ve been having trouble tapping the parts area. Sometimes I have to tap it a couple dozen times to get it to open. Tapping Tempo to get settings is problematic too, but not as bad.

    Already tried delete and reinstall.

    iOS 11.4 ipad 10.5

Noticed same problem on iPhone SE too, but I figured it was just because of the smaller screen.

Are you already aware of this?

    Hi,
    Start/stop/sync
I can't get this to work (no doubt, user error) in apematrix, aum or patterning. I have already enabled the start/stop in Quantum by double tapping "Ableton Link On" and toggling the slider.

Please could someone share the settings in apeMatrix/aum/patterning. I can sync but I can't get stop/start to work.

Can anyone confirm if AUM supports Ableton Link start stop?

start stop is working in Audiobus although the first bar sometimes only plays the first note for some reason. Questions above remain :-)

Echoing @syrupcore I think it would be helpful to save cc maps for different instruments as presets. Particularly if we could share them in the community.

    Thank you!

Sure adding save/load CC maps to my list. Will look at the Midi Capability enquiry too

If you tap the help button (?) it shows you the touch region for each control as a red square. I will recheck this & tweak to make it easier though. I often have issues with Fmt (although you can double tap ABCD too).

AUM current version doesn't support Ableton Link Start/Stop - not sure why?
AB crashes for me when I try and enable Link..

Yes CC maps need to also be saved as xml files (or simple text files) so its easier for everyone.

Apematrix only supports start stop in current beta I think and still waiting for AUM.
Not noticed any problems with it. Remember in Quantum, it’ll depend on your play mode what it does.

Double checked and I’m hitting the right touch region. I’ve been tapping, trouble, triple tapping... everything. Most frequently have to hit over a dozen times before it’ll respond.

I just tried the newest Apple Pencil as well. Same problem. No issue with any other app.

Could we get the AUM button on screen in Quantum to go back to the AUM app?

will try this out later today with your same hardware setup. Do you have settings touch display on - this can make touch a little laggy.

Yes - IAA transport was nearly working before for me - but I have many panels that overlay the screen so need to hide/show it accordingly. I too put Quantum in AUM channel - so IAA panel will make it easier than HOME then select AUM.

Just checked. No, touch display is not turned on.

I will say that I’ve been diving deeper in Quantum ever since the recent update and I don’t recall having so much trouble with getting some menus to launch a few days ago. That’s why I tried delete/reinstall.

Going to try a hard reset too, but like I said... not having this issue in any other app.

I must admit I've not had any issues with this, although could be a 10.5 issue, I'm on a 12.9.

I do also think that triple tapping something by design is a bit counter-intuitive and could probably do with a a different shortcut though.

I think you just figured it out. I didn’t know it’s only triple tap for that section. That’s why it’s been taking so long to eventually get it by accidentally hitting a triple tap. Seems odd that would need a triple, but it works every time with a quick triple tap.

@midiSequencer says that double tap should work too, but it doesn’t for me. Only triple tap.

On that one row, the last 4 icons are single tap, everything else on the line is double tap... except for ABCD is triple tap only.

I get why most need to be double tap (because of close proximity to single tap m ->) but I don’t get why ABCD is triple tap. Seems like making that double tap too would solve the issue.

yeah it's confusing, i think if you need to triple tap something it means you probably need another icon or something instead, because it's easy to forget that shortcut.

Hey, thanks :) seems awfully strange for that to be only a triple tap. I don’t get the logic of that at all, but I can also get there via double tap on the FMT spot. Seems like ABCD could easily be double tap too unless I’m missing something.

come to think of it yes ABCD triple tap is the combo you need to open the formant panel.
I made it triple as double is too easily triggered when you select A then B say fairly quickly it thinks its a double tap.
I can improve this by seeing where you tap (ABC or D rather than the area)
It should still be single tap to select A or B or C or D though.

It is single tap for the parts (when I have parts). Just triple-only for ABCD

If you’re tweaking, I find more often than not, I’ll end up moving the adjacent step slider when I just want to slide only one. Not too bad, but seems like it could use some tweaking.

It’s a brilliant sequencer though. Genius really. And is quickly becoming my favorite. :)

  • @skiphunt its ok - I just removed the triple tap - now you only need to tap ABCD buttons once. The Fmt label has been widened to provide the double tap to open the panel.

Glad you're liking the sequencer - its sort of grown organically by user requests but still has a lot of features I use in my own composition process.

The next update will be out within a week.

I can see now how rapidly hitting parts could be read as a double tap... so triple does make sense. My only problem was that I didn’t know ABCD was in fact only triple, so it confused.

With the possibility of accidental misread of double-tap when switching parts, I can see that triple tap is a reasonable way to handle it. Maybe highlight that it requires a triple-tap in your interactive info panel? It’s there but easily overlooked.

And, within the formant interactive info panel, there’s a typo “independat“ should be “independent” yes?

*Actually, this reminds me: @midiSequencer , would it be possible to include a setting for placing the Audiobus panel somewhere else? I know the function is there and have seen other apps that allow this user control. The right and left sides of Quantum have lots of play controls, I would prefer if the Audiobus panel was at the top (or maybe bottom) as these are more controls that you use to set up a session rather than to play one.

I've added another control to the Audiobus control panel(last icon with 4 arrows). It moves the panel to one of the four edge positions every time you tap it.
You need to tap this outside of Quantum (as Quantum controls are meant for the apps to remote control Quantum).
This should really be an Audiobus control.....

Oh, wow. I was expecting something buried in the Settings app; dynamic control will be amazing! Thank you!

  • Nice :) yeah the audiobus panel could do with some upgrades. Maybe you should be able to undock it and float it etc, sometimes it just doesn't sit right on the edge, depending on the app.
