    Since I haven’t posted anything to the SOTMC I really find it hard to give any negative critiques because I don’t want to piss off anyone & get the old “let’s hear you do any better”, etc. (Although, lots of my earlier recordings are easily found by looking at my profile here for my website, etc.)

    But in @trackedout’s case I sincerely want to help as a brother musician. You have your song craft down, the structure is good and sound. The problem is just the total lack of low end, bass, etc. in the track. Sometimes mixing with headphones can cause the perception of “how much bass do I have” to be skewed.

    There’s just a lot of spiky, high end in the track and not much low mids and bass. Remixing it with increases in those areas, and reduction in the high end, with perhaps adding a synth bass or bass guitar part as well then you’d be cooking with gas.

    Good luck, keep doing it because this is a field of endeavor where practice TOTALLY pays off, I learn something new everyday recording & writing music...it’s never ending.

    Be cool...

    Hey thanks for the very kind feedback. I agree that my vocals have improved a lot, particularly when I compare them to what they were back in 2015 when I started doing the SOTMC. They were pretty bad back then. I'm still limited in many ways but I am developing a style that works for me, and I'm happy with that. The first thing that struck me when I listened back to this track after not hearing it for a couple of weeks was that the vocals sounded alright, so even if I end up discarding the song (very likely) I'm happy with the performance.

    Regarding the mastering, that's right it is mastered to -14 LUFS and for SoundCloud that isn't optimal, because it will sound comparatively quiet. I don't really want to start creating multiple masters for various platforms, so I just live with that compromise. The "problem" you mention can actually be even worse this way of course, because autoplay on SC can then cue up the next track which is really loud and will blow your ears or your speakers! That's actually why streaming platforms enforce -14 LUFS of course, so that you don't get massive jumps in volume from one track to another. Maybe SC will catch up one day.

    Thanks Richard, I'm getting close to getting used to LUFS and just dealing with streaming as the new "platform" in the wax cylinder->shellac disc->vinyl->cassette tape->CD->MP3-> timeline.

    For as long as I can remember it was get it as hot as possible before clipping... technological improvements like LUFS gratefully de facto ended the loudness wars, but it still takes some tme to adjust.

    As far as SoundCloud goes I really am trying to support them as they are the only streaming platform of its kind that allows users to upload material while also providing major label streaming. I joined their monthy GO+ service which I'm very happy with, they have full catalogs of many of my all-time favorites (CCR, McCartney solo, Beck, Stevie Wonder, The Police, etc) as well as the huge amount of independent artists.

    Yeah, recordings with actual dynamic range sound weirdly quiet to our ears nowadays, it can be unnerving hearing a track breathe and go from quiet to loud :)

    SC are still the best platform for easy distribution, especially with the conveniently embeddable player. Let's hope they survive. I pay them the "pro" sub.

  • @theconnactic
    Not into metal, but liked this track. Good story to the lyrics and musical dynamics.

    @trackedout
    Liked this... not really my style, but liked it. Good, technically but like studs1966 said there's some bass eq needed.

    @crouchie
    Enjoyed this a lot. Very well mixed, especially that wide stereo image. Flows well, I'd (personally) want to hear more of this style (what would you call it?) ... it's great driving music!

    @icsleepers
    Wow! Loving this! Crunchy, hint of d'n'b, loving the bass synth you got goin. Guitars and strings really take this to epic levels. Sounds like something you'd expect in a top notch hollywood blockbuster!

    @studs1966
    Awww yisss! Loving the Disco Mix mate! This'll get the crowd on to the dance floor for sure! Great production and loving the b-line. Who's the vocalist?

  • Ahhh awesome, thanks @dedko :)

  • Thanks @dedko mate. Hear name (vocals) is Zara Taylor. :)

    Hope the voice loud enough. No apologies for the length, I liked the end bit best.
    People seem to long for a past that frankly never existed and I was reminded of this listening to a politician on tv the other day. So this is about him. Hate explaining songs but felt it just needed a mention 😉

    Wow, love the sentiment, and the track is something the Talking Heads probably wouldn't of minded writing. The synths & bass keep this undercurrent of suspense flowing & the English accented vocal bits were perfect for this.

    It's very hard to write any type of social commentary, "protest song" without being hamfisted about it, you pulled off a great track with a very cool message too, well done.

  • I’m in for this month as well. Somewhat shorter then my previous postings, still no vocals. Not needed I guess.

    Wow, I am not taking it the wrong at all. It looks like the way I react to stuff I really like. I am really glad, this song did that kind of thing to someone. Thank you, you made my day!

    My entry for the month, lyrics in the spoiler:

    Sink in a sea of uncertainty
    Drown in a pool of doubt
    Reach for the shore that you knew before
    Or wade in the shallows and shout

    It's not that clear to you or me
    We're both so lost and unhappy
    We try to change each other's minds
    But it's too late, to turn the tide

    Drift in the swell of anxiety
    Deep is the sea of distrust
    Float on the ocean of trouble and poison
    And face all your fear and disgust

    It's not that clear to you or me
    We're both so lost and unhappy
    We try to change each other's minds
    But it's too late, to turn the tide

    So what's the score with you and I?
    Do we give up and let it lie?
    We try to save our hopes that died
    But it's too late to turn the tide

    Hi Richard, Nice work. The way you sing on the verses kind of remind me of Matt Berninger from The National, though your voice pitch is a bit higher. I don't see much to say, great lyrics, nicely done. There is maybe one synth sound that I found a bit cold, I would have added a bit a overdrive/distortion to warm it up a bit. But that's just my taste.

    A lot of work on this track. Really nice. Far beyond my technical expertise... I wish there was some vocals. Do you know the German band called Moderat. Your track reminds me of their work

    Raw! Loose! Aggressive! All the qualities I came to expect from your songs are there. One of the best I heard from you. Great job!

    From where did you get the sampled voices in the beginning? Great choice! Great mix, your voice is clear and it's good! Enjoyed this one a lot, really!

  • @icsleepers said:

    Okay so, short backstory. I tried my hand at getting into stock music a bit ago, I honestly just don't pump out stuff fast enough, plus, my stuff is just a little too niche. This track started its life on GarageBand as a Pond5 submission that was rejected. I REALLY liked the mood though and couldn't let it die, so I went back to the drawing board, cut everything up and put it into Auxy, added some stuff from Blocs Wave and as always ran the whole thing through Grand Finale.

    Now with Sunrizer and Turnado being AUv3 compatible (crossing fingers for Effectrix!), plus the fact my Auxy subscription has ended and I don't see a great reason to re-up it currently, I'll be shifting over to GarageBand (which probably means a little less drum and bass and a little more of the alternative electronic I used to do).

    Enough blabbering from me, enjoy! And @richardyot thank you so much for getting this in place each month I always look forward to it and hearing what you guys are cranking out

    What a beautiful, somewhat dramatic beat. Bravo! Liked this one a lot.

  • @studs1966, great song, beat and mix - the usual I expect from you. This one (I listen the first file) is definitely ready for the clubs.

    Many thanks. They are from the original House of Cards UK series, did a screen recording then sent into AudioShare to save the audio then into Auria. Was v easy and will do it more now I know how!

  • Sorry I’ve been out of the loop here lately, things have been a bit overwhelming at home the past few weeks (long story short: my wife had full hip replacement surgery, rare for one as young as she is but such is life and she’s recovering as well as we could’ve hoped). Anyway I will try to get caught up on feedback here today or tomorrow and hopefully have something to contribute myself by the end of the week. :smile:

    @richardyot your tracks always seem to have “pro” stamped on them and this is no exception! I really like the sound you’ve captured on the vocals, it fits nicely with the feel of the track and the lyrics. Very nice job on the mix too, as I said it sounds professionally done. Great track!

  • My first submission and first ever track but based on feedback from the forum I thought I’d post, especially based on the liking for vocals - I was really going for singability on the song.

    Tenderless
    (all in Cubasis)

    Really looking forward to listening through all the posts (I’m also in the “new person/difficult to critique camp).

    Cheers all and thx for a listen!

    Love it! I especially like the breakdown and transition from 3:30 to 4:30, very nicely done. The sound choices and space fit perfectly with the groove of the track. Nicely done!

    This is my latest original song, a heavy metal (yes, isn’t that cool?) with darker tone and lyrics. Loud guitars, and a very fast solo near the end! For this kind of music, nothing better than the german classic silent movie “Faust” with the gorgeous Camila Horn. As usual, lyrics bellow. All recorded and mixed in Auria Pro using an Apogee One, a cheap strat knock-off, an equally cheap precision model bass, MXL mics and a Marshal JTM 30 with a Rat and a Boss delay. Enjoy!

    I like it :smile: The vocal harmonies were done well (you should do more of this in your tracks BTW). And the guitar solo was spot on. My only suggestion would be to bring that solo more forward in the mix, I kept wanting it to be a little more “in your face”. Just a minor suggestion though, I really enjoyed the track.

  • @trackedout said:

    First let me say I like this. It’s got a cool edgy feel. But let me give you my thought process while listening. My first thought was “cool, but hmmm where’s the low end?” Then it was “oh that high end crackly bit on the vocals is neat.” Then it was “oh wait, is the missing low end intentional?” Then it was “yeah I bet it is” but with a lingering “I’m not sure” :smile: So one way to answer that for the listener is to actually bring up the low end at some point, like the chorus or even just a bridge, then take it away again. Feel free to ignore that and follow your gut though. I did like it as I said. And the abrupt ending was cool too. 😎

    Ooooh nice! The synth at about 1:45 and 3:30 or so is super cool. The whole thing is great but the highlight is the last 2 and a half minutes. Awesome stuff man. The vocal level is just perfect in that last section, and my one minor suggestion would be to bring up the vocals a bit in the rest of the song (but keeping the existing level in the last section). Loved the whole song though!
