iPhone Music Making App Future: Is there one?
I am a tad concerned, I won't lie.
The iPhone is starting to feel like not much of a consideration much anymore.
Do you feel that the iPhone is silently being not considered for future serious apps?
What can change that?
Do you wish most apps were Universal?
Do you use Universal apps more that non?
SIDE QUESTION:
WILL FAB AU APP SIGNAL A URGENCY FOR AURIA TO UP ITS GAME? Many people I know only use it for the Fab apps. IF they are not locked in Auria, will Auria loose a grip on some users and need to get a little more sexy?
I personally hope this allows Auria to crank it up. To me it is amazing, just needs more "fun" non traditional feel at every turn.

I will re-evaluate my opinion on this topic once iPhones get way bigger screens.
Personally I'm still using an iPhone 5 and mostly just to capture sounds using AudioShare and Airdrop them to my iPad Air 2. New iPhones are around the corner in a few months.
Rumour mill says 5.8", 6.1" and 6.5" for the new models 4.7" & 5.5" for the 'old ones'.
As long as developers are 'forced' to having to support the smallest 4" iPhone it will be a pita to accommodate all sizes meaning some apps will simply not have enough room on the smaller phones and if they do it will be too small to be useable.
Since iOS12 will be supported on the iPhone 5S and SE I don't see any change in the situation unless Apple allows to 'skip support' for certain iPhone screen sizes.
Rumours also predict an 11" iPad which would mean yet another scree-size to target, arghhhhhh....
For my eyes the 4.7" iPhone 8 using 'zoomed mode' (same amount of stuff on screen as 5, 5S & SE) is acceptable but still on the smallish side for apps with loads of knobs and switches.
But that's just me...
I think I remember one developer (Bram?) saying that iPhone sales were very little compared with iPad sales of the same app. If it doesn’t drive sales then I can see developers saying it’s not worth the extra design time to fit apps to the different screens.
Despite using only an iPhone for the first year of my iOS experience (I had maybe 10 apps), I have abandoned it completely for making music. I have 1GB of music apps on it, and think I’ll trim that down even more or maybe put Garageband back on it. I found even Rozeta in AUM to be more trouble than it was worth on the phone screen. I pretty much take pictures/video with it and use AudioShare. Then AirDrop to one of my 2 iPads. I also have an iPhone 6 and don’t plan on ever buying a new phone without a headphone jack. So, I’ll likely leave the Apple phone market eventually.

Grooverider works great on iPhone. I don’t think much will change. There will always be a decent amount of quality apps on iPhone. Not as much as iPad, but good enough.
Music apps aren’t a true target for Apple anymore. Design? Maybe with new iPad with stylus...
Since fragmentation drived by whatever target Apple has nowadays (and forcing devs to support new ones like X...) it seems stagnation is the norm and worth factor is gone. Apple wants to sell premium devices and cheapo for schools but not for professionals (or aficionados)

when it could have been the perfect platform for musicians...) but those times are gone...
I hope new iPhone displays sizes allow for some kind of iPadization of the larger (also seems the reason for discontinue iPad Mini) iPhones... and some apps get love.
I prefer small phones and middle tablets but it seems Apple release the opposite (even dropped the iPod
I hope Apple returns to the creative users but I feel it’s not going to happen and standalone hardware will be my only path to find my tools. Recycling old iPhones/iPad as usual (one machine for each killer app) was another path but iOS11 proved me wrong...
Idk I’m truly biased by dissapointment but since I live in present moment and my budget is far from premium prices of actual Apple proposition... my bet is wreck, wreck system...
I think iPhone for music making isn’t taking seriously by anyone. In fact, despite smaller screen it has exactly same capabilities as iPad. But it has to do with what people want and need, and I think it’s obviously bigger screens. As iPhone don’t have some of most essential apps choices, especially on DAW side, it’s a bit hard to make it a really viable music platform. Musicians who needs as mobile as possible devices are really a few ones. But personally, I love making music on my iPhone and never have been as creative and connected to my music. So if I have most apps I truly need, it’s good enough for me, I make the choice to keep making music only on my iPhone
For a phone to be as useable as an iPad for music it will take a UI design that suits both large and small screens, that is definitely a massive challenge and only the most dedicated dev will make that effort.
Phones are by quite a huge margin the most populous machines, unless this breakthrough in UI is made then music making will never have as much weight with the manufacturers as a photo filter app.
As I don’t have an iPhone I do not know which apps work well on a phone, anyone care to share thoughts on apps that allow you to make decent music with lots of control, synths, mixing environment, song building etc...that work on a phone without being fiddly due to tiny controls or lots of screen switching?
@AndyPlankton nailed it--everyone lauds universal apps but usability is really an issue in many cases... That said, there are some cool new apps that are designed for iPhone. I'm beta testing LoopField and it's a wonderful experience on the iPhone (and apropos given that it's meant to capture/manipulate ambient sounds). I've always thought that Figure is a delightful experience on the iPhone--same with KRFT. It's a niche but here's hoping that creative devs continue looking at opportunities with these ubiquitous devices.
Having recently gotten a used iPad, the first thing I thought was man I bet Gadget is so much better on the big screen as opposed to my 6s. I soon realized that Gadget just kind of has a shitty interface in general, IMO. One thing is for sure though, Grooverider kicks ass on both.
To me, what you use to make music is just instrument or tool. The most important is what is done by the musician, call it music or art, and what suits him or her better for being creative. Honestly, since apeMatrix and its landscape mode vs AUM’s portrait mode, I don’t feel limited for AU use. I agree Gadget is tricky. Loopy is perfect, as are Blocswave, Launchpad, iFretlessBass, Thumbjam and KRFT. Most/enough AU are universal. Even Xequence is perfect. For DAW AU host, there is only GarageBand, it’s perfectly usable on iPhone. With all those apps, you can do everything musically. I think there is a future for iPhone music making. True question is do people realize complex things can be done on this platform too? Making music all the time everywhere is a must have for me.
IMO iPhone is great as a super portable effect unit , but I’ve also played with Caustic much when not having my iPad .
iPhone music making is going nowhere. It is going to stay here as it has always. Yes, there will likely always be less apps for it then for other the iPad, but it’s not going anywhere. Look at Steinberg. They just made a huge investment in iPhones. They just bought the IP of Xewton. Would they do that if they weren’t going to invest even more into iPhones? My thought is, they wanted to get in to iPhones fast, and rather than building again from the ground up, they bought something that was already in existence. I believe they will continue to invest further in that program. No, I’m not worried one bit. Everything is the same as it has always been. We may have less, but we will always have enough.

I started out on my iPhone but quickly grabbed an iPad for the screen space and apps like patterning and bm3 ...
I have only found a few apps on iPhone that I enjoy using without getting frustrated...
Tardigrain, kronecker, tc11, groovebox, spacecraft, moog model d.... That's about it.. And AUM..
The rest that I've tried are just hard to work with.
That being said, for me, I'm ok without iPhone apps falling out, but for those that rely on it I hope it stays
My iPhone 6 is the only ‘serious’ way I can make music these days, and I have a scant few music apps that I use to supplement using GB w/ AB. I have such low-level requirements that I don’t foresee much that will cramp my style for the foreseeable future. For that I may be one of the lucky ones, as I see a lot of folks on this forum that are into some pretty serious sophistication where it comes to their muse.
I barely use my IPad Pro for music anymore, it’s pretty much all done on the iPhone X here.

I had been using the phone for ab remote and ac sabre. It's an 8gb 5c
Since the latest FieldScaper update I have been taking it to different places and have been amazed at how powerful this app has become. The looper and sequencer add a lot once you dig in!
Mainly Groovebox, TF8, FieldLoop, Garageband, and Gadget.
I only use an iPhone plus. I travel a lot with a backpack and an iPhone with a lifeproof case doesn't have the same potential to get damaged as an ipad. Plus a lot of people already have iphones and if they were gonna shell out half a grand or more would just buy a laptop. Just my 2 cents
Im super thankful developers take the time to make a UI for iPhone. I know probably a bit of a pain but it's enriched my musical life so much to be portable

As intua has told quite a while ago, they want to get ipad version to the point that they can release it to multiple platforms without having to push out big release right away after multiplatform release. And was supposed to release the iphone version months ago. I bet they are just waiting for the next big update.
I’ll bet they aren’t. I signed up as an iPhone-exclusive beta tester back in 2016. To date, I’ve seen exactly 0 beta versions to test. As of right now, the iPhone version, in my eyes, is vaporware. The last time I made a comment like this one, I was privately emailed, told I was being unprofessional, and was assured that BM3 for iPhone is still very much an intended product. I can see where they are coming from, but they need to see where we are coming from: I’ve been waiting for over 2 years to see a single beta! I am unable at this time to show any enthusiasm for a non-existent product that I may not live long enough to see released. So when others joke about us 40+ year-olds being concerned that we may never see it, it’s not a joke.
