Is it still worth buying the Holderness or AUFX effects?
Hello everybody!
Is it still worth buying the Holderness effects? The full FX bundle cost 16,95€ in the moment but I am mainly interested in crystallines (5,95€). I think there are quite old and the last updates released one year ago...
May there are now good alternatives in AU format in the AppStore? If so, which you would buy?
The same question I have about the AUFX bundle. 🎶😎
Thanks a lot for your suggestions!
Have a great day! 👍

I’d say nah. They’re not gonna update to AU. If you want shimmer reverbs, look at discord4 and eos2 from audio damage.
i was also tempted by Crystallines but got discord instead due to the reasons already mentioned.
Setting up AUFX with IAA is ok but what a chore to get it going in Audiobus, at least as a send effect. AUM takes care of most the EQ and compression. Something AUM needs is a simple delay and reverb built in. Not holding my breath however.
I still think there is no better shimmer reverb on iOS that crystalline. Hands down. Got Discord4 but it’s not doing it’s shimmer magic like crystalline. I use it as midi fx and I have not once had a problem with loading this fx up. Works perfectly on my iPad (iOS 11)
I sort of agree about the sound but I wanted to support the dev who offered AUv3 in this case. I have mixed feeling about it.
That is false information. Kymatica has stated he will make AUFX auv3.
And to answer the question I’d say they are worth a download. AUFX space is still one of the best 3 reverbs on the platform. Crystalline is well worth a download for a proper shimmer verb.
Definitely get the Holderness apps. By far some of the best sounding, stablest and most processor friendly apps on the platform. I have used Crystalline in every live performance for years and Stereo Designer for at least half.
This stuff about Eos and Discord4 is silly too — ok for exploration but not realistic for practical purposes. AD apps are great sounding but have aren’t perfect in terms of stability and CPU efficiency, so using two of them to replace a very specific purpose app?
I was actually recently using Discord4 in a live setup and I had to remove it because it was causing all sound to cut on pressing play in AUM, until a full system reboot (very thoroughly tested to determine the culprit).
I use Eos2 and I’m happy enough with stability (and it does sound nice), but it definitely uses it’s share of CPU power.
Crystalline straight up sounds better for its purpose. The ducking in Crystalline (found in it’s settings) are essential to that effect, too (imo).
AUFX apps — no question. Best in class.
Yup holderness FX are still my favorites. Especially if connecting to a hardware instrument.
Caramel, crystalline, echopad, stereo designer, johnny, swoopster. All excellent.
The UIs are far superior over the AD apps for idevices as well imo
Don’t have enough experience with the aufx apps to compare.
Holderness apps are likely to go AUv3.
AUFX also likely also (eventually)
Spoke to the Holderness developer a few years ago, who said he had plans to do it.
The Holerness app I want most for AU is Stereo Desiger.
Great app, but... not yet ... blah blah blah..
King
I have the AUFX bundle and love it but when we will see the AUv3 Is unknown. Also the Audio Damage Discord4 and E02 are awesome and i never had any issues with them, they sound great!
Actually thanks to this thread, I snapped out of my AU daze for long enough to swap out my AD reverb and delay send AUs for their AUFX equivalents.
I do like the sound of the AD apps, but with AUFX my processor usage has dropped significantly, I have a sound I prefer (familiarity), I'm working with interfaces that are much more enjoyable (both in familiarity and it's also nice to fine tune in full screen -- switching not an issue as I never touch these apps settings live) and I also have a system whose stability trust much more strongly.
Thanks @j_liljedahl for making good shit!
Furthermore -- this thread has alerted me to how similar the apps and tech that I'm using today is to what I was using 2-3 years ago (apart from BeatMaker 3, which was a huge leap forward).
If anything, by chasing the hip new thing (as is the style of these times) I've actually taken numerous steps back over the years (which I've understood and remedied as lessons have been learned). Through trial and error - I've changed an awful lot to eventually not really change very much at all.
Real progress has come primarily from the consistently high quality vision and progress by creators of workhorses like Audiobus, AUM & BeatMaker 3. The Audiobus3 app autoloading & MIDI functionality as well as the ever developing depth of control in AUM and maturing of BM3 have brought me far more possibilities than loads of cool new apps to spend my money on have.
Also, for me, there's no difference in workflow between AU or IAA. I only use one overall configuration at any given time (recalled by AB3 or BM3) and all the IAA apps I use recall their states, are controlled by MIDI and load automatically with AUM, so where's the difference there? I never even tough the things either way.
Holderness stuff remains my secret sauce well into the AUv3 era. Crystaline! Echo Pad (unsung multi fx hero)! Johnny!
One thing worth knowing if you fall in with Holderness stuff, each effect has an iPad and an iPhone version, so it’s possible to install and use 2 instances each on iPad...
And Holderness saves state in IAA...
with AUv3 you can use more than one instance in AUM which is very useful.
That's an amazingly great point in theory, but all my effects are sends and I've literally never loaded more than one of each!
Not arguing against AU by the way -- I love it. It's no reason to throw out all that came before though.
You are right about using returns/sends. return/sends are excellent for effects and cuts on processing power I would imagine but for compression/EQ AU is very useful to have more than one per project. Also for more experimental music people like to use the same effect in different ways on different channels.
I guess the best solution for me personally is if Crystalline could be updated to AU, no arguing it sounds awesome.
Saying that I will take your point about sends, i should use that option more often and maybe i will buy Crystalline after reading your comments.
you can, of course. get the Crystaline Mini iphone version as well then at least you have 2, one for the send output and one for an insert or another send .. it sounds exactly the same , just an iphone sized interface..
@OscarSouth thank for the reality check. The new Audiobus update has got me loading IAA apps again now I can see which ones have statesaving. There’s some very good apps that have not made the AU leap yet (and maybe never will).
And yes, there does seem to be a question mark about some Audio Damage apps stability both here and on the BM3 forum. Maybe they push the envelope that little bit further to walk a bit of a fine line. Or maybe it’s just the RAM limit that AUs are currently restricted to. Who knows?
Thank you very, very much for all your suggestions!
I appreciate your advices! 👍
After reading your feedbacks I have to conclude that both the holderness and AUFX effects are still worth their money. You've been very persuasive here!
I am not the one who no longer buys an app just because it is not AUv3 compatible. What counts is the user-friendliness and of course the sound quality.
Cristalline seems to be quite unique and without alternative in the AU world at the moment. For this reason alone, I believe that a purchase here is worthwhile. Since the excellent audio quality of the Holderness effects is often praised here, the other effects could also be interesting for me.
I have read several positive reports about the AUFX effects of @j_liljedahl , also in this thread. Some time ago I asked in the forum for recommendable reverbs. AUFX Space was also praised there. Of course I like the fact that the AUFX are very CPU friendly! Thanks for the advice!
So was soll der Geiz! 😎
So what is this stinginess! I just bought both FX bundles! They weren't that expensive (10 great effects for 3€ each). I think I'm gonna have my fun with them.
Once again many thanks to everyone who hastened so far on this thread. You helped me a lot with my decision to buy or not to buy?
Many greetings from Berlin!

Is that a picture of your house? It’s very nice, and you don’t need a lawnmower
imh ears the Holderness 'Johnny' Tremolo (which may look simple stupid) can compete with some very expensive vintage or boutique pedals.
It just does that slight saturation trick the proper way
Aufx Dub is really convincing with it's background noises - once even fooled me into thinking a mic channel was open.
No need to use real cassette tapes if you're after that lofi appeal.
Subtle points, but they show how close both Holderness and Kymatica are to the analog model.
For shimmer reverb ToneStack also presents an option that could be worth considering, certainly once it goes AUv3
Crystalline and Johnny are two of the best on the platform still--def worth the $$. Space is also excellent. Don't forget that AB3.1 extends the utility of non AU apps that support state saving. Monetize your investments!
I have Crystalline but never use it. I think it sounds terrible, like an icepick to my ears.
haha I know what you mean - I always low pass heavily
Valhalla shimmer iOS would be nice.
Yes please. Maybe Strymon could do a Big Sky app...how cool would that be.
Yes and once you do that it can sound beautiful.
Also, I really love caramel. Not much talk about it but you can really crunch an organ sound pretty good. One of my favs. And Johnny of course.
@chandroji you got some great effects for a great price there. I think you will appreciate the UI simplicity (relative to some others) combined with the reliability and sound quality. Developers deserve many thanks.
agreed..yes no better shimmer reverb on iOS than crystalline
or someone could simply do Bloom, Cloud and Blackhole(H9)...
