This is the 'dilemma'. The 'On My iPad' is the iTunes Documents folder and that folder can not be accessed from the AUv3.(But works fine for the stand-alone app).
So if there is a need to 'share' files between the stand-alone and AUv3 they have to be stored in a 'Private Storage Container' and that in turn could be 'shared' to Files.app using an iOS FileProvider extension in a similar way that AudioShare does. The downside would be that those files could then NOT be accessed from iTunes or iFunBox...
Yeah, this is burning up my icloud fast.
Samu will you share your lately bass?
Here's a single sample...

I tend to use the Yamaha FM Essentials.app when I need me some Lately Bass
Drat, didn't realize this is the way this works. Is there any way to prevent iCloud from storing presets and samples in the cloud? That is, I want to sync files with iCloud but I want to keep the files stored on my iPad, too. Is that possible? I've been through all of the settings and I don't see a control that allows this?
As long as iOS 'thinks' it has enough room for local storage it keeps the files on the devices but it will push them to the cloud when on wifi. There is no way to do 'selective' sync of an apps 'cloud content' as far as I know...
Ironically some of the AudioLayer factory patches have to be fetched from the iCloud from time to time so I don't know if it's some kind of 'time limit' on how long they are kept on the device before being flushed off back to the cloud?!
Needless to say I'm NOT a fan of Apple's iCloud as a service, it sucks really, really bad...
(I still have no iCloud 'AudioLayer' folder on my Mac as an example and it's supposed to just 'magically appear' on my Mac too for easy file-transfer, huh?!).
Another app that suffers from this 'periodical preset flushing' is VOLT...
Don't know if there are any 'hidden benefits' of using the larger (200GB+) iCloud Drives but I don't see myself paying an 'Apple Tax' for cloud storage since I'm using less than 200MB of iCloud storage...
Thanx Samu - I should go to the store and get it unlocked.
Nice sample, how did you record it?
Any hints on velocity settings?
Froze a track with FM Essentials AUv3 in Cubasis with a single note on it saved the *.wav to media bay and shared it over to Twisted Wave on the Mac for a bit of trimming and uploading to Dropbox. I could have used AudioLayer directly in an effects for the sampling too but old habits are hard to shake...
Sometimes I just hook my iPad to my MacBook AIr and do sampling using IDAM (Ie. record the iPad audio input digitally to the Mac and edit & save the samples).
Sometimes I use Logic Synths to create some crazy sounds.
Here's a very loud ChipSnare made with the Logic ES-2 synth (automated the vector scope to quickly switch between the oscillator waves) and a bit of reverb.

Okay, feel I’ll be embarrassed by the answer but, how do I save in the setlist folder?
Thanx. Inspiration. That Lately sample sounds really good.
Yeah I really think iCloud should be used for storing preset info but not all the samples as well. that should be kept on device in Files storage. Both AU and standalone can access files there now. At the moment I have files which keep reappearing in the import folder after deleting them all. Can't get rid of them, they keep coming back and I'm deleting in both icloud on desktop and icloud on iOS folder..
edit: ok they seem to have finally been flushed after clearing out recently deleted folder
+1 no need for icloud samples saving!!
This is crazy... What kind of cloud service automatically moves stuff to the cloud from local storage? I would be fine with it if there were control to turn it off; even better if there was a setting for elapsed time before files moved to the cloud. But taking that control away from the user is lunacy... @VirSyn are there any workarounds here?
was wondering about this.. where is this ‘import’ folder.. I am not seeing it in the apple FILES app.. nor in icloud drive..
can you ( or anyone else ) give any more info on this ?
ah! now that’s weird(ish) , after switching on icloud drive in the app and over in apple settings.. noticing that then all my instruments had gone, then switching it all back to local storage again.. suddenly there IS an Import folder for audiolayer in the files app!?
any clue as to why that might be..
any road will try an exs24 import now and see how it goes.
gah! it’s all a bit frustrating really... you can copy all the exs24 samples over in the files app easily.. but the actual exs24 file won’t go.. you have to go back to docs and use share and then ‘copy to files’ to get that to be recognised and work. ( most likely apple files app failure rather than virsyns hiccup? )
then the exs import by tapping on the file works.. BUT two things... 1) it froze the audiolayer app with the sample list in view and it needed to be closed and opened again.. ( no biggy )
2) you can’t then switch back to ‘local storage’ where all your other instruments are.. if you do the imported exs isn’t there..
@VirSyn , could we perhaps have a proper local to the ipad ‘files app’ folder with this import proceedure included.. it seems myself and a good few others discussing here don’t want to be using icloud for potentially a large amount of sample Megabytes. the exporting of instruments together with samples seems to work great so backing up using that technique ( to dropbox or locally wherever ) would be a lot of peoples methodology.
apologies if this is already in discussion and i haven’t picked through the entire thread..
meantime. i got a korg minipops drum machine exs24 in via this long winded shenanigans so i should post it over on the sharing thread as a test. there haven’t been any multi sampled ones there yet.. and i guess currently the only way around this is to reexport yr exs instrument as an audiolayer preset and reimport after switching to local storage!!
Yeah + 1
Al really needs a local Files app storage option which is open to the file system but doesn't copy everything to icloud, but you can still use the icloud folder for instruments you want to share between devices easily.
I don't want to be restricted to how much icloud space I have left really.
I have no clue how to manage midi program change in setlist. How can I copy my already made instrument to setlist folder?
I don't even see a setlist folder! Do I have to manually create one?
should normally be created automatically. If not just create a new folder named "setlist" and you're set. In the sort order you see the instruments there are they taken by program change commands. We're open here for discussion about a better solution, but this is a quick start solution.
Maybe we underestimated the number of people preferring to work with local files. Many functions are currently optimised for iCloud usage and for reasons already explained being @Samu it's a pain for developers and users to get an open local solution working. But our final goal is to have a local version as close as possible to the convenience of the iCloud one.
There is no workaround afaik. Not sure if Apple knows when this happens...
But in theory it should only remove files temporarily from local storage if there is a space problem. As long as there is enough free space on the iPad the removal should never happen.
One solution here could be to implement iOS File Provider support the way AudioShare does?
(See the AudioShare<->AUM connection).
The advantage here would be that all Virsyn apps could freely share data with each other and also make them accessible thru Files.app using a FileProvider Extension (So for example ReSlice could be used to slice a samples recorded with AudioLayer and AudioLayer could directly load the slices once they are processed/saved in ReSlice, no import or export between apps would be needed).
Just about the only downside of using iOS File Provider Extensions is that those files can not be accessed using iTunes or iFunBox (or similar apps). This is why AudioShare still has the 'iTunes Folder' available but also provides WiFi-Drive feature for quick and easy transfer between computer and iPad when 'AirDrop'(ie. a non Apple computer) can not be used.
This is just a quick 'solution sketch' and I'm sure it can be refined...
pretty sure that the iOS File Provider is somewhere in the equation, but AUM & AudioShare have one comfortable advantage: They are both not AUv3 and that is where the devil comes into the equation.
You don't need to switch to iCloud version for importing ! Just tap on the exs file as you do now but leave AL in local mode and you'll see that it imports correctly !
Yes, but still using a 'shared/private storage container' like many AUv3 developers already do for 'sharing presets' between stand-alone and AUv3 extension to be able to use them with any host.
AudioShare just happens to also implement the FileProvider.
(This is how I've understood the situation but I'm ready to be 'educated' in this area too).
That would be great. Maybe I am misunderstanding but I’m not sure why you have to choose one or the other, why can’t the iCloud folder and local storage folder be active at the same time, that way you could choose which instruments were in the cloud and which remained exclusively on the device.
So in your instruments list you’d have a local folder and iCloud folder, or you could have a tick next to which instruments you wanted in the cloud, then the app would copy the samples to the correct folder.
interesting idea, will think about it after next memory clear...
ok, so I just had to go through the switching icloud on n off to create the import folder?
so I will try it now with another exs file and see how that goes..
ah! ok... so the deal here is THERE IS NO IMPORT FOLDER in the ‘on my ipad’ audiolayer which has now mysteriously appeared from nowhere ( perhaps to do with closing the files app and reopening?? ) BUT if you copy all the samples and exs file directly into the AL folder ( thanks Apple for not making this obvious or straightforward either ) and tap the exs file it DOES import the instrument successfully... hurrah..
I have to say this is all quite confusing.. definitely some streamlining required here I think..
plus I will politely mention one little word ‘manual’ ...especially needed for these more esoteric manoeuvres.
but that said,,, many thanks @VirSyn for sticking with it and for even implementing import for such instruments.. at least the learning curve is quicker than the old roland s760!
once you know how... it all seems reasonably simple....ish.
Found a bunch of old Akai *.iso files on a hard-disk tucked away somewhere were the sun don't shine and buhuuu.
64-bit ESX24 in LogicPro X no longer imports the Akai files. The support was apparently dropped when Logic wen't 64-bit. The *.iso is a backup of the super classic X-Static Gold Mine 1...(Sure I can extract and trim the audio-tracks from the CD since I have the original but it would be way more handy to import the 'Programs' straight to ESX24).
I'm currently not in a mood to chop out single shots from CDs and save the to files...
Yeah, I was quite sure it was a free space equation that was being applied, but it's not so. I have 30 GB of free space on my iPhone and iCloud overzealously moves every single AudioLayer instrument and sample from local storage and stores in the cloud. This is quite problematic. Let me give you two use cases:
I travel a lot for work and AL is a perfect solution for me to get some music production work done while on a plane. The last time I flew I opened AL and found all of my instruments and samples had been moved to the cloud. ARGH! No cell service or WIFI, so obviously I was out of luck.
I have an upcoming gig and I use AL to store all my instruments. Before I leave the WIFI at home, I will have to make sure that every instrument and sample has been downloaded.
I have maintained from the release of the app that the iCloud solution for sharing everything is super elegant and useful--and I get it that you have very little control over Apple's questionable decisions about how to offload files from local storage. FWIW, I like @Carnbot idea of simply mirroring the local folder and the iCloud folder (even better if the user can toggle on the cloud storage option). Thanks again for "listening".
