I don’t understand how to move instruments into there.
I had to manually move them in the Files app. Drag them into the setlist folder and then it works as expected. Thanks for this, @VirSyn!
The process of importing EXS files, is about as clear to me as a glass of mud.
Does somebody have a video up on this, or is there a manual...because the vague instructions in the forum are not helpful to me?
Thanx
We could check out the manual videos from Virsyn. Oh no... wait. There are no.
I tried the exs import but somehow the only folder that won’t accept drag and drop file management is the import folder of Audioplayer I cannot move files into this folder without my Mac. We will see. Maybe it isn’t that muddy @MrSmileZ
I've been in a BASIC loop all day:
Some really useful Pianos, orchestral strings, drum sets are now installed. The work on making the App more stable and performant has really paid off with this update! Now... if I could just open an SF2 in AudioLayer and select an instrument to load more people could join in the fun (no need to have a Mac and the EXS24 Synth to convert/export instruments).
It's the best $15 App on my iPad and increasing in value with the effort. Kinds like BS-16i but with the low latency responsiveness you need from an "Instrument". I have even got to using these new instruments in Cubasis yet.
OT: Now I can make EXS Instruments from the u-he Synths on my Mac and make them available to IOS. Oh boy. Tomorrow.
I loaded the SoundFonts4U Yamaha C5 into an AudioLayer Instrument. It's available at:
https://dropbox.com/sh/0icsg7vdj9qnt86/AACl4MvgB0a2VLKBSLej3J0Da?dl=0
It's about 1/2 GB in size and may not load on an IOS Platform with less than the 2GB of RAM I have on my 2018 9.7" iPad.
On my iPad it sounds like this:

Let me know if it loads for you or not. There are a ton of samples that could be removed for smaller devices. It just takes a lot of time to throw them out and re-adjust the layers/zones of the remaining samples for complete coverage of the keyboard and all velocities.
I think a lot of readers have started to tuned this thread out and it's really starting to take off. Better early to the party than late, huh?
Has anybody found out how to move imported Instruments into a specific folder.
aAlso can’t seem to be able to move Instruments/sample folders into other folder once they have been saved. As I get more and more Instruments I will definitely need some kind of folder hierarchy to make it manageable.
Hi @VirSyn I'm finding icloud sample management tricky here too. When deleting instruments it doesn't seem to delete the samples (or not always) and sometimes instruments samples are split between different folders so it's difficult to know what is safe to delete. Is there a good method for keeping this workable?
Okay. Nice that worked.
Should I be worried at all about them being in the iCloud drive? I intend to use this with the band live so I turn off wifi to conserve resources. I see the deleted-not-deleted issue so I wonder. But I should have a pretty stable small set of samples.
As @lukesleepwalker helpfully pointed out to me, you can move them via the files app.
There still seem to be an inconsistency here - perhaps I am still doing something wrong. If I move an instrument- say Piano into a sub folder called Keys within the Instrument master folder and then move the folder called Piano into a sub folder called Keys within the Samples master folder - when I load the Piano Instrument from within AudioLayer then it does not load - there are no sample showing on the Layer/zone view.
If I leave the samples folder called Piano in the master/root samples folder then it works.
In other words you can organise your Instrument folder but not your samples. It all works correctly if you create a new instrument from within AudioLayer.
Sorry, but sample folders can't be moved at the moment. But this is planned together with a more flexible exs importer where you can select where to import.
Samples are never deleted when an instrument gets deleted. You can use the samples for many instruments. AL will get more intelligent with each update hopefully...
Newbie Tip:
Velocity numbers get used to select specific samples but it only becomes a control of the instrument volume when you set
it closer to 100% on the Modulation screen. Otherwise it uses 0% and every velocity sounds at the same volume.
Before I figured this out I thought I'd have to edit the recorded volume of every sample to get what I was looking for with Moonlight Sonata. "Light goes on." Duh.
Really looking forward to reading more about how to use and control this beast. I'm sure they are writing like crazy over at @Virsyn.
The iCloud loading of instruments is painful. iCloud as backup and for adding instrument imports is wonderful.
+1 on the tip on velocity. The default is the opposite of what I was expecting so well worth noting here.
And agreed on the iCloud storage. I created a preset last evening and by this morning iCloud had already stored it in the cloud and I had to redownload. No storage issues... Grrrrr
I've been converting Apple Mainstage EXS24 Instruments like crazy. Then importing SF2 libraries into EXS24 and converting those into EXS instruments.
I think I need to figure out what works well for the MOD WHEEL option on a layer... it only seems to modify the Envelope used on that layer, I think. Any clues for me?
Looks like I'll have to wait for the manual. I found a new passion in a new low cost DAW (Audio Evolution Mobile) that works well on my iPhone and imports SF2 libraries. The developer uses the forum to gain insights on our needs and keeps improving the App. A Universal DAW for $6 with some excellent Soundfont and FX IAP's fits a niche many of us need. It's one of the top DAW's on Android. Since introduction it has added AUv3 host behavior and Universal capability along with a lot of other Android to Apple changes.
This was nice @McDtracy
A little Grieg is like a hygienic piano shower, like bathing in a cold creek.
I’ve been to his home outside Bergen - “Trollhaugen”, Seen his piano, his little composer hut. But what struck me most was seeing the grotto where he and his wife was buried... or cemented into. A little path led down to the sea where the Grieg grotto is located. It was a very moving experience, a class field trip the summer I was 18.
I chose the Grieg MIDI file that @tja used for the Piano World Cup:
https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/27181/piano-world-cup-finale
I almost used some Bill Evan's but I thought @tja deserved the hat tip for auditioning yet another piano option on IOS. If you recall the Auria Pro load of the Salamander Yamaha C5 won the poll so I wanted to use that as my AudioLayer ESX24 import after converting from SF2 to ESX24. I suspect the Auria Pro still sounds better but it's not working through the AUv3 porthole.
@VirSyn : I’d also like to see a proper manual for “Harmony Eight”
OK. So maybe no manual is coming. AudioDabbler's video(s) and this forum should get us through the learning curve. If a manual does arrive so much the better.
I am also amazed that there's not more buzz around this App.
Turning Synth's into audio effectively is at the heart of everything most of us do and wrestle with on IOS.
HINT: make a sampled instrument of your synth's output
I realize there's a whole world of realtime music generation that this does not apply to... and they have their own tricks to keep sound flowing. In another few years maybe I'll understand more of that approach. So much ignorance to be contained and eliminated.
I have found that the sexy apps around here that drive manic threads are the innovative Starcraft types. AudioLayer has some innovations under the hood but at its heart it is a workhorse tool. I measure success with these types of apps by how often I open them. In the case of AL, it's just about every day. That's a winner.
That said, I hope @VirSyn can figure out the local storage thing because the way iCloud currently works is driving me nuts. Great that everything syncs across devices but maddening to wait for the files to download from the cloud to use them (even on devices with no storage limitations).
How do you import SF2 files again?
You don't have to wait if the samples are already on your device, only if downloading from a PC, in which case copy to device first. There's a great little app called local storage which I use to copy files from PC via usb cable and they appear immediately in Files app, ready to transfer to AudioLayer folder. so even for really large amounts of samples it's a quick process.
@VirSyn is there anyway to recreate the AudioLayer Files folder without reinstalling? I didn’t think I needed the ESX files anymore once they were imported but now the Files folder has gone too 😬
With "Load factory instruments" in AL Settings you can recreate the contents + folders.
Not sure how you lost the AudioLayer folder by trashing the EXS files. Have you looked in the trash if they are there ?
You can delete the files in the import folder after importing, but you should leave the EXS folder in AudioLayer/samples intact.
Convert them on a Mac using Mainstage or Logic's EXS24 synth and export from that synth.
I'm actually referring to how iCloud overzealously transfers my all of my AL files (instruments, samples, etc) to the cloud. I have no problem transferring samples or importing. It's that, even in devices where I don't have a storage shortage, iCloud transfers the files from local storage to the cloud (perhaps if I don't use them for a certain span of time?) without me asking for it. In fact I just want them to stay in local storage and sync with the cloud... Perhaps I'm doing this wrong by pulling the files from iCloud vs "on my iPad" folder?
Right. I thought they could be imported directly. Thx
I’m good at borking software
Thx.
