I’ve been using the Autosampler in Mainstage to sample all my synths and create loads of EXS24 patches, but not having any luck importing these in to AudioLayer. When I tap the .exs file in the Files app, it opens in AudioLayer but doesn’t find any samples. I can import the .aif files into it manually using the file name detection, but then I lose all my mappings and loop points etc.

EXS24 files I’ve downloaded from other places import fine, it’s just the ones I’ve made with Autosampler that load without the samples.

Any ideas how to get this working? @VirSyn

I had the same. I can only import esx24 files with wav samples. Autosampler can only produce air files....
    Anybody an idea?

Could you send me an example Autosampler program including the AIF files?
I have an idea I'd like to try...
(send me a link by PM)

Just sent you a PM, thanks!

    1. The format (.aif/.wav) is specified in the .exs file.
    • AudioLayer will search for samples, but it will only search for the format specified in the exs.
    1. The EXS24 Sampler inside of Logic Pro X has an edit button (when advanced features & tools are turned on inside of Logic's preferences).
    • This not only requires a Mac ($999+), but also Logic Pro X ($199)

    1. SFZ - @VirSyn I personally have no problem without .SFZ, but it has none of the above issues.

In the above picture I'm using sforzando (Free) and TextEdit (Free)

TX16Wx was just updated earlier this month for the first time in YEARS to version 3 (Free)(Desktop).

How did you get on? Presumably nothing new in months from @VirSyn on sfz import means it’s never going to happen?

Virsyn hardly ever added much noteworthy functionality (not counting fixes) to their existing iOS apps so I would suggest to spend the time you'd otherwise invest into writing an SFZ file, into renaming your wave files so they can be mapped by AudioLayer automatically. That's the most laborious task when creating sample programs so that will save you a lot of time already.
If you use the layers creatively, editing inside AudioLayer shouldn't take too much time.
Of course the big disadvantage is that your work done in AudioLayer is worth nothing when using a different sampler (although NI Kontakt can also map by sample name fields).

Gotcha. As I’m using stagelight at the moment I’ll probably just import into sampleverse for now, which is a shame as audiolayer is otherwise fantastic.

    Awesome.

I keep grabbing AudioLayer in my projects because it's rock solid as a playback engine for my imported instruments. I would love to have hundreds of instruments to utilize without a lot of pain. Most of the instruments I have took a lot of effort to tweak for good coverage of the keyboard BUT it's so cool to hit a note and think "That sample sucks" and be able to just edit it off that note and slide another to cover that note that just sounds better. Like the early days of SampleTank (lots of instruments to pick from) but I can delete samples with pitch problems or excessive vibrato.

My biggest frustration is like most Apps that have long lists of files/instruments/presets. Scrolling through long lists to pick something out. They don't seem to let you move instruments around after creation in the file system. If I'm missing something please slip me a clue.

  • I use audiolayer all the time and have few complaints. Any updates will be greatly appreciated though.

  • I use it all the time as well, it’s definitely one of the biggest iOS breakthroughs recently. Still hopeful for an update soon for a few things including stability on very large layered instruments. Also would love to see more au parameters exposed other than fx.

  • @VirSyn Count me as someone who would very much like SFZ support in AudioLayer.

  • Does anyone know how to convert an sf2 or sfz file to exs24 on mac?

If you've got Logic Pro X installed it's very easy.

Just put the *.sf2 files in ~/Music/Audio Music Apps/Sampler Instruments/ then launch Logic Pro X, open an instance of ESX24 and select the SF2 from the preset-list.

On first load the presets in the sf2 file will be converted to exs24 instruments and all the included samples will be extracted in a neatly into a folder called SoundFontSamples.

I guess the procedure is the same using MainStage...

Unfortunately I don’t have either of them. Would anyone be up for converting the GeneralUser sf2? It’s well worth it as it contains loads of instruments.

  • @gregsmith said:

Which General User SF2? Don't they have 127 instruments in those soundfonts? Each one takes best case 5 minutes so this is a best case 11 hour effort.

You can see why more automation in the app will make it an incredible tool and will see like hot cakes even tho' many will find bugs. Still... 11 hours that might get boiled down to load and wait. It will crunch for maybe 1-2 hours and require a lot of storage. Doin it from the cloud for storage will work and just take 11 hours or so.

I have just put my efforts on hold pending an update since they are focused on this at @Virsyn. But it's a small team.

Maybe we can split up the work in the meantime. Pick 5 of your favorite General User SF2 instruments and let's see how hard this will be.

Good point. I was able to convert them all to sfz in one go in about 10 mins, but forgot this isn’t how it would work in Logic with esx24

The cello one is really good if you did want to try one.

The one in MuseScore is good and Audio Evolution Mobile Studio which supports loading of random SF2s to build a library and sells additional sets as IAP's.

Thanks so much for this. Ive only tried the cello instrument so far but it seems to have imported into audiolayer to the right notes. The attack is different sounding from the sf2 I think but I can tweak all of that easily enough in the audiolayer settings.

Thank you for these links. The cello for the GS 1.471 (EXS) sounds so much better in AudioLayer than the GS 1.44 I converted for Stagelight into sfz from the GS 1.44 SF2 using Polyphone using the same sample files. It would be nice if there were an iOS app that supported SFZ so we could tweak our samples and then be able to export it to EXS24 and SF2 to be able to use them in whatever DAW we wanted.

If AudioLayer ever gets SFZ, I’ll focus on using those because it’s not a proprietary format and I can go in with a text editor to tweak whatever I want. Plus anybody I share those sfz files with will be able to see what I’ve done and change it too.

Best of all AudioLayer has disk streaming so I can use large instrument samples without limiting my setup’s performance capabilities. With AudioLayer as my central sample player repository, I could use it in whatever DAW setup I wanted and not need to duplicate my efforts without having to shuffle back and forth between iOS and macOS.

Hopefully at some point more music creation apps will integrate with Apple’s shortcut app so we can do batch processing of samples too which is currently a significant advantage of other platforms.

Look forward to what @VirSyn does with AudioLayer towards making it an essential sample instrument creator and player.

    1. Download the zip file.
    2. Unzip the file to get access to the EXS24 files.

@Lithalean posted a link to them as part of the GS GeneralUser GS. There are a lot of EXS24 instruments in the collection.

    1. Download the zip file.
    2. Unzip the file to get access to the EXS24 files.
    3. Use Open In to open the instrument you want in AudioLayer.
    4. AudioLayer will import the samples and load them into AudioLayer
    5. Load any other instruments you want into AudioLayer by repeating step 3.
  • oh cool i got the gs 24 general user to unzip and load. thanks guys
