  • @eross I’ve setup a file structure in AudioShare for dealing with sample instruments, app presets, wavetables, and similar app support files. AudioShare can unzip and zip folders. Glad you got the EXS Import in AudioLayer working.

  • cool, so should i just drag zipped instruments directly into the audiolayer file folder in the files app?> @InfoCheck said:

  • I dont get it ;) do I need a computer for that?
A bummer this is such a pain to get something useful out of Audiolayer.

@david_2017 you can do this on an iPad.
You need to unzip the file first before transferring it as detailed in step 2 below.

    1. Download the General_User_GS_1.471 zip file from the website in Safari. You can use “open in” choose Files app, choose the directory in AudioShare where you want to store it. I have setup a folder in “AudioShare/Apps/AudioLayer/EXS24” to store these files.
    2. Unzip the file “General_User_GS_1.471__EXS_.zip” to get access to the EXS24 files.
    3. Move the main folder “General User GS 1.471 (EXS)” containing the EXS24 and samples into the AudioLayer folder using the Files app.
    4. In the Files app, double tap the EXS instrument file (e.g. “12-String Guitar”) to open the instrument you want in the AudioLayer app.
    5. AudioLayer will import the samples and load them into AudioLayer
    6. Load any other instruments you want into AudioLayer by repeating step 4.
    7. You can delete all the EXS files from AudioShare unless you want to save them there as a backup or to install them in another app such as Auria.

@VirSyn A stability update would be nice. I'm having issues importing the 16 & 32 velocity layer versions of Realsamples instruments.
    Like this Grand Piano:
    http://www.realsamples.de/epages/17831984.sf/en_US/?ObjectPath=/Shops/17831984/Products/602/SubProducts/602-0001

The 8 velocity layer versions still sounds nice though.
Heres how to use Cubasis to play chords in a certain key.
In this case it's D. (For anyone interested)

*Note: I'll upload a proper demonstration of this instrument later. This was more about showing how I build chord progressions.

I did it! Thank you man! I deeply appreciate you taking the time to write it again for me! Thank you! What was my problem? It was that AudioShare did not show up in the files app. I went to edit and switched it on. Then it’s a easy thing getting this going. The cello really sounds great! Thanks again!

  • @david_2017 you’re welcome. FYI, I tried to download and install the Nice_Keys_Ultimate_v2.3 which is a little over 1GB when uncompressed and ran into a lot of problems. After finally getting the folder with the EXS files and sample folder into AudioLayer, some of the instruments didn’t install into AudioLayer correctly like the Yamaha C5 Grand (which worked well in Auria) while others like the Violin Vel SSO installed and played in AudioLayer without a problem.

One of the big issues for me with the EXS format versus SFZ is that you can’t tell which samples are associated with a specific EXS instrument whereas with SFZ you can. With EXS I’m stuck with all of the samples whether their corresponding EXS instruments work or not. At least with SFZ I can filter out both the non-functional EXS instruments and their samples and repackage them however I want to use them on my other iOS devices. This prevents the need for huge sample instruments packages which can be more problematic to download/upload on iOS.

I hope @VirSyn adds full SFZ v2 support and improves the robustness of their ESX implementation.

  • so one thing I’ve found when importing these to audiolayer is that it’ll create multiple layers of the exact same sample. Is this supposed to happen?

When I imported the acoustic bass, I had to reassign the root notes to make it sound right. Audiolayer is so good that it’s easy to sort, just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Here’s a duplicate sample issue I’ve had. I think there are some issues with either the Files app and/or AudioLayer as when I imported a large folder of EXS files into the AudioLayer document location with the Files app I encountered problems. When I load one of those EXS instruments into AudioLayer, it loads samples from the correct sample location and then it does it all over again by looking in the AudioLayer trash.

Deleting the Recently Deleted files from the Files app does nothing. I can’t see a way to get rid of these trash files without using iTunes or iFunBox to delete them from the iPad. It would be useful if we could do this from the Files app or AudioLayer. Fortunately I only end up with one set of samples for the imported EXS instrument in AudioLayer so the instrument works.

Your problem may be more complicated. Is AudioLayer interpreting the EXS file correctly or was the EXS file designed to do different things with the same sample on different layers? Another possibility could be that when the EXS was generated, they produced a flawed sampler instrument? These are all reasons why I prefer SFZ as I can look at the instrument’s logic and make corrections if I need to. I can document the instruments I create so others can understand what I was trying to do.

It is very useful that AudioLayer enables you to modify and save the EXS files you’ve imported. For example, if you’re playing chords you may need to lower the level of the samples so they don’t clip. Being able to clone an EXS instrument with different settings for different playing contexts is great as you are not having to duplicate the samples they use.

It would be nice to have a way to easily identify which samples are used in which sample instruments to minimize duplications and manage the samples more easily. There are so many sample instruments floating around on the net that you can end up getting duplicates. Doing a search with the Files app and getting details about the files might be one solution. I really need to learn more about the ShortCuts app as it looks like it might be able to handle these tasks.

An EXS may not work depending upon the combination of the app you’re loading them into and how the the sample instruments were coded. I have found EXS files that work in Auria but not in AudioLayer or others that work on macOS and not in AudioLayer.

I thought maybe it was doing something by oversampling the layers but not sure.

It’s fine for my current needs but when I’m starting new songs I might look for some patches already made in audiolayer. Is there a repository somewhere?

  • Everytime I see AudioLayer I think "UPDATE NEWS?".

But no... just more moaning. It's still one of my most used apps as is.
    But I'm a rom-pler guy. I'd say Sampler but I learned:

"This word sampler... I don't think it means what you think it does."

Now I'm looping at Loopers and it also means many things to many different people.

  • @McDtracy “Looping at Loopers”. I like that. Don Quixote-esque.

Freudian Typo. I have used Loopy HD and like it but Quantiloop offers metronome free looping like a typical guitar looper's pedal. I looked into Infinte Looper and ruled it out as dated. I think the free Quantiloop will help but I need to test the Blueboard and that's a Pro feature. I read that the Blueboard needs a firmware update and it requires Windows.

    IT's ALWAYS SOMETHING... ARG.

I can’t get the Yamaha C7 EXS instrument to load into AudioLayer as it crashes during installation. It will load and play in Auria. Any ides about why this is? Were you able to get it to load into AudioLayer?

  • Okay, joined this forum so I could ask something about AudioLayer.

What I want to do is not for everyone, but here it is:

I wish to build up a single patch, featuring single sounds on each key, for example, one with car horn, the other with belching, another with screams, or a chainsaw, but also be able to have a zone with standard orchestral instruments.

This most closely resembles what Zappa did with his Synclavier.

Am I to understand that I could do this with AudioLayer?

I have not yet purchased it, since thirty bucks is a huge chunk right now, but I could justify it on this basis alone.

Yes. You may select a audio file for each note on the keyboard.
There's a good video of the app on YouTube made by the @AudioGus as I recall that will show you the steps I think.

You can also play audio files based upon the velocity/volume of the key being played to simulate the tone of soft and loud notes.

You can also loop the audio to allow for long sustains.

You can also import instruments if they are in the EXS format.

You can also go crazy waiting for the next update which promises to be a real doozy.

Stay and ask more questions. Any fan of Frank Zappa's will get something from associating with the diverse community here.

I seem to have hit peak AudioLayer performance on ipad Pro 2

I have about 13 velocity layers x 87 samples each on one layer and similar a layer of release notes. Sounds great in standalone but weird things are happening like release notes layers have to be deleted to make it work.

There is also increased latency by a noticeable amount. and worse I've broken the AU version of the instrument. The AU version of the sampled instrument, even lighter versions of it, as I've saved different versions with lower amounts of samples always crash now.

So looks like I'm going to have to delete lots of zones to get to the acceptable amount. The amount of simultaneous voices and cpu are within acceptable limits here, just maybe the amount of files to reference are too many?

I guess we can't expect it to be as powerful as desktop sampler and it's sounds great with half that number of samples or less but is this likely to be max performance issue and not a bug? @VirSyn

I've also discovered another issue with icloud option, if you turn off the icloud option to local storage then the presets disappear. I'm not sure how to transfer them over from iCloud to local. If I do a test and create a preset in the local storage option, this preset doesn't show in the documents folder. So I'm confused about this, could be another bug not sure. Where are the local presets saved?

Love this app but i need to go and break something else for a bit :D

Peak AudioLayer is something like peak oil - it doesn't exist ;-)
Besides the joke - this is definitely a bug and fixed in the current beta. Will be available soon.

Yes, you can do that, and that's exactly how I use AudioLayer in my setup.
I use a lot of samples with my 80's covers band, so I have a patch with different samples assigned to the last octave of one of my MIDI keyboards.

  • Thanks to all of you that answered so quickly. Well, there goes thirty bucks. Worth it!

  • Okay, I'm happily tweaking sounds now! Any hints, tips, hacks?

    Price bump up from $15.

Hopefully it's a bump to cover the engineering needed for a pending update we will see soon like SFZ or SF2 sample import or auto-sampling (send MIDI out notes and make a layered instrument faster) but time will tell.
