@Rhism - It is interesting to see the $ amounts. I've wondered about that and the difference that AB made for developers. Hopefully once the word gets out, you'll see numbers which will amount to a reason for doing this beyond purely for the love of it. I would think that targeting non-musicians would make sense, given the relatively small market size of musicians alone, and the fact that your app is about as easy as it gets for a non-musician to get started...even though nailing it takes some time and dedications.
@mgmg4871 Yeah Kickstarter's an interesting beast. It seems like it takes a lot of time and effort to put together a good campaign though. Definitely something to keep in mind. Pianism, bassism, percussionism, vocalism... the potential future projects list doesn't really end
@funjunkie27 I suspect the 'AB factor' would be less than 3x for more established and full-featured music apps like ThumbJam. Biggest impact is probably on dedicated synth/effect/recording apps as AB exponentially increases their usefulness. Non-musicians are definitely important though more unpredictable and thus higher risk/reward. Many music apps are making good money just within the musicians community, so I'm going to try cracking this market first. guitarism is getting positive coverage among all the major music app blogs / sites I know of, so that's a good start. Of course, more suggestions for getting 'the word out' are always welcome
@Rhism - It seems to be that the more full featured apps might be in jeopardy due to AB. I would think that having more specialized apps and allowing users to pick the best of breed, and tying it all together with AB, would be the direction things are heading.
Understood on the risk factor with non-musicians. I'm doing what I can to help you get the word out....everyone I've shown it too has been impressed, and a few of them have picked it up. Aside from word of mouth, social networks, Youtube, and the Internet in general, I think that using any music app live has to be one of the best ways to market it.
@funjunkie27 Agreed - the monolithic app is dead, long live best-of-breed apps!
Today guitarism cracked the Top 50 Paid Music Apps in the US and other major territories, largely thanks to people like you showing the app to friends. A $1 price helps too It's amazing how few downloads make a significant ranking difference in those charts.
I've tried live performance demos, in general people find it extremely impressive but also walk away believing it's too complicated for them. I once spent a few hours playing live outside of a PAX (huge videogame convention in Seattle) where at least a thousand people would have seen/heard me play. It yielded about 20 additional downloads. I do want to try playing outside an Apple Store someday
I was once talking to some folks from Smule, and they said that their best conversions come from videos. Ideally videos of celebrities demo'ing the app. If anyone knows Bono, send me a note
@Rhism - congrats on breaking through! Well deserved! You're right in there with the best of breed, and should expect a significant raise beyond minimum wage :-) I wish I knew a celebrity or two. Perhaps a charity fund raiser with David Gilmour, Edge, and Jimmy Page playing Guitarism versions of their hits would do the trick! I wanna see Page whip out the bow on his iPhone :-)
@Rhism there's talk about minimum wage going up to $9 an hour in The U.S. so might need to crank it up or you might fall below minimum wage again.
LoL!
@mgmg4871 Aw man, gotta keep up with the Joneses!
@funjunkie27 Thanks! Tomorrow will tell how much of a 'breakthrough' it was - note that this was the "Top Paid Apps" list not "Top Grossing" so it just considers # of units sold, and guitarism was $1 competing with a bunch of apps at $3 and up. It probably won't go too far above $100.
Speaking of Jimmy Page, the multi-touch chords in the next guitarism update will also support hammer-on / pull-off, and the layout is fairly different from (i.e. much better than) the iPhone version - more guitar-like, especially on iPad mini. I've been having a blast playing the 'Whole Lotta Love' riff all day
@funjunkie27 But regardless, was a trip to see guitarism ranked above heavyweights like DM1, Ocarina and Nicki Minaj
@Rhism - You should do a YT video of you playing Whole Lotta Love!! How did guitarism fare yesterday? I'm not surprised that it is ranking above many of the heavyweights!
Bought it. I didn't even read the App Store reviews. 192 comments later and seeing @Rhism 's presence in this thread and commitment to users was enough incentive. So here's to passing up the free app of the week swiping medieval monsters and begin strumming the glass to make sweet music!
Yeah I'm pretty sure this is the largest thread on this forum.
@Hmtx Can't you get both? ;-)
@Ryan. ...yes, in fact my above commitment to music only has already been overcome by my opportunism, lol. Infinity Blade is fun too, but I have to admit, since i discovered music making apps, very little time has been spent on iOS games. Keep up the great work @rhism @sebastian @michael and the many other committed devs who spared me from Angry Birds
@funjunkie27 Yep hoping to make a video for WLL next week, it's pretty fun. guitarism's chart rise netted $91 at the end of the day, looks like it's a pretty small pond. I'm guessing the top 10 is where the real action is at.
Also interesting to note was that guitarism held a spot in the 50s-60s on that chart for about 48 hours until v2.21 got 5 user ratings, at which point the App Store started showing guitarism as having 5 ratings (when it's less than 5, the App Store shows total # ratings across all versions which was about 250+). Suddenly the chart ranking dropped to about #80, and revenue fell back to $60-70 per day.
@Hmtx Wow we've been pretty chatty here. Thanks for the vote of support! Maybe someday I'll add a game mode where you can strum the guitar to fight medieval monsters Hmm actually that doesn't sound half bad...
Haha, I was thinking that @rhism but I thought all you serious musicians would laugh at my idea. Glad to support your great app!
Angry Bards?
It would really be awfully helpful if apple did something like 5(250) for review counts.
Paul has the lines! Still chuckling about the loss of a peel. You must be a dad.
Fret ninja.
I am. Sadly from afar.
@PaulB @syrupcore LOL awesome. Can't decide which one I like more
@PaulB Angry Bards!!! HAHAHA that was so awesome.
There's always megalord. ;-)
Sorry to hear that my man. Recently gone part time myself.
@Rhism Angry bards is far superior. Fret ninja sounds like an actual jerk bag guitar product.
Fretris, though. That has potential.
Super Mario Rockers? I'll show myself out...
@syrupcore That sucks. Don't do what I did and get stuck too far away to visit frequently.
@syrupcore @PaulB That sounds really rough - hope it doesn't last too long
I think I can start a whole line of music-themed games based on this thread
Though Angry Bards definitely wins... the plushies for that would be fantastic
