Yes, Yes, A great new App from Kai Aras called the RE-1 Virtual Tape Machine and it's also a Looper, very very Cool Beans

You can get the RE-1 Virtual Tape Echo here at the App Store
    https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/re-1/id1407764053?mt=8&uo=4&at=1l3voJz

This is the coolest and most fun app like this I have used to date!

I just ran a test on iOS11.4.1. iPad Pro 10.5. AUM as the host. Quanta AUv3 latched as the source.

First, loaded RE-1 as an IAA fx slot. Made adjustments and let run 15mins. Battery dropped 2% from 77% to 75%. cpu use at 23%. No heat change.

Then, ran same test for 15mins with same setup only using RE-1 as AUv3.

Battery dropped only 1%. cpu use at 17%. And again, no heat detected.

This is interesting, we’re getting wildly different outcomes re: the heat issue. I wasn’t paying attention to iPad heat during my first jams with this app, but just now I ran an AUM session similar to yours and I’d say within 3-5 minutes the Apple logo began getting very noticeably warm. And after 10 minutes or so the entire backside became what I’d consider extremely hot. CPU usage was hovering around 18-20% so I’m not too sure what’s ramping up this heat so quickly on this end while yours remains cool. I’m on a new 12.9” 11.4.1.

I don’t know. I only have one iPad and this is how it behaves on mine.

I will say that I made 3 attempts to make videos earlier with screen recording, using apeMatrix, Zeeon, Volt, Rozeta, and a new beta drum AU that hasn’t released yet. The first time the video was too long. Second time I scrapped the effort because news notifications kept popping up. Third time I didn’t like the composition I came up with enough to share.

Detailing that because even after all that, while even screen recording, I never had any noticeable heat or significant battery drain. As a matter of fact, I’ve been using my iPad all day including a lot of photo editing and still have 18% battery.

They ONLY difference is that I’m still using the beta because it’s got the time stretch stuff I mentioned.

I’d say test again after the update comes, then you should be on the same build that I’m running. Although, I don’t recall any issues with the submitted build either.

If there is an issue, I’m 100% certain Kai will get to the bottom of it... just message him. I don’t think he hangs on the forum much, so either Twitter or email are best. He’s in Germany I believe so you’ll need to be patient with the reply delays due to time difference.

  • @RockySmalls updated iOS but still runs hot. Will follow up with the dev. The effect itself sounds fantastic, and I’m confident this piece will be sorted out

I just ran an AUM session with Quanta and RE-1 as above and while my iPad got a bit warm, it wasn't hot by any stretch. 2017 iPad pro 12.9 and things are smooth sailing so far.

  • edited August 2018

I found this to be a bit processor hungry too. I can run smoothly with DubStation loaded but if I swap in RE-1 in then the cpu starts spiking. Can’t comment if it was abnormally or just normally but defo more cpu hungry then DubStation (which isn’t the lightest cpu wise itself)

Will do... I already trashed the videos though. Didn't sleep well and I'm not very focussed. Or, I slept TOO well because I've been eating too much Melatonin before I go to bed like candy. No bueno. If you take too much it makes you feel like a zombie. ;)

Have been itching to make some session screen recordings though... it's just that I never know if I'm going to end up with something decent, or something that overdid it. Usually the latter. ;)

Really am enjoying it though. None of the sheen has worn off at all. It's like everything I wanted in a portable tape looper, and then some... only, I don't have to scream a bunch of naughty words while trying to splice sticky cassette tape without using lint-free gloves, while watching the tiny cassette screws tumble down a nearby drain. ;)

It's become kind of a utility app I use almost every time... like the Rozeta suite.

thanks for the info... didn’t want to update myself,, people were pointing at ios version being responsible for problems with first versions of Quanta.. but it turned out it wasn’t relevant at all,, so i am cautious.. am in contact with Kai.. and have done some extended running tests and sent him the results, he seems confident he will get to the bottom of it..
battery drain seemed about double what it should be if things were normal..
yes, i like the concept of it.. looking forward to a new ‘super cool’ version...

  • This is one of the best loopers since its always running and all you have to do is play in tempo and not worry about nailing a 'start' point. Like this more and more i play with it.

I like the free running approach too, but the new Link Transport function that will be in the next update along with a Time Stretch switch... is cool too. Comes in handy if you want to start recording/overdubbing into several instances of RE-1 at once.

Also like making a loop of maybe 1 bar, saving the loop inside RE-1, clearing the tape, reload 1 bar loop, but time stretch it out to 8 bars. You can actually already do that in this build I think.. there's just on an on/off switch for the stretching in the launched build.

  • From how I’m approaching this, I can’t seem to get a set up for standard sound on sound looping, like I have with Kosmonaut. There’s a minimum 5ms delay on any sound coming out of the looper based on the delay setting for the active playhead. After a few loops it’s very noticeable if more sound has been recorded on top. I also can’t seem to get a 1 bar loop either; set to 1 bar, I get 2 bar loops. I’m in AUM.

    Anyone else with similar troubles?

same here. 1 bar loop is like 1/1/2 bars weird.
also, how do i turn overdub of so that the loop can just keep looping without recording more ?

Very fair comment. Worth waiting until the new version drops.

Indeed, all good. I’m confident he’ll get to the bottom of it if not already fixed in the update. I’m a big fan of all his work so patience and maybe an ice pack won’t be a problem.

And I feel ‘ya on the video making endeavors. Maybe send me the vid privately though so I can see all the cool ways you’re using the app? o:)

Have you tried Valerian capsules? They seem to work as well as melatonin, but without the logey feeling the next day.

Valerian ++. Do smell somewhat like pingpong balls, but no harm etc .

The Sopranos lead me to the tea...what a bad idea! Not the effects, but the godawful smell. I find I can gulp the capsules quickly enough without smelling them.

Thanks for the recommendation fellas. The problem with melatonin is that anything beyond 300mcg is too much, but most resellers only offer 1mg or 3mg tabs. The 300mcg ones work well but I ran out and was chopping up some leftover 3mg tabs. Can only quarter them before they crush to powder, so I’m still getting nearly 3x too much. Ordered more 300mcg last night, but will try valerian too. :)

not sure this app is ready for primetime yet though.. not behaving itself using au automation in cubasis, a lot of distortion ( not in a good way ) , drastically overheating the ipad pro 10.5 inch!!? like , REALLY HOT... and with battery drain to go with that..
that occurs even in stand alone.. loving all the features for this price... but not sure I can use this in any ‘living dub’ sense presently..
don’t like to be the bringer of bad tidings... hopefully I might be an isolated case?
    anyone else?

I also have a very hot 10.5 iPad whose battery gets drained more quickly than any app I’ve ever used. I’ve also had some distortion. I’m in audiobus with zeeon and blocs wave.

    iOS 11.4

  • Also have a hot iPad 10.5. IOS 11.4.1. The distortion is being caused from to much output from the synth or drum app you are using overloading RE-1 and by turning down the output on the synth/drum app works for now. I’ll contact the dev to let them know.

@klattgalvin , @p_bow , @jaymoreaya , are all of you using 10.5 inch ipads? just a long shot for a common link for the problem that Kai mentioned.

never mind, i reread yr posts.. so problems reported on 10.5’s, pro 9.7’s and 12.9’s.. seems the issue is linked to Pro models at the moment..

dual core issue maybe? even though i'm not sure all those models have dual core.

wish i knew! i have no intimate knowledge of the insides of these things. might even be that 120 hertz screen thing?? Hopefully Kai will sniff it out..

  • how soon till this goes universal? I’m very excited to have this on my iphone

  • Anybody tested this? Already found a bunch of bugs in the standalone and the au version.

  • It crashes pretty regularly in standalone for me, especially trying to use the user imported samples, and I can't figure out how to get the user samples from standalone into the AU version. That said, I really like the sound and the looping function is pretty mesmerizing. Hoping that the bugs get worked out...
