That's good, they released a bugfix since then so hopefully all well now...
Midi Channel Switching ... please..
Loving Riffer !
Using the VST - so using multiples of it - lashings of it actually...
SO much fun, and lots of really good outcomes.
Is there anything Quantum can't do?
The huge number of possibilities, and with music concepts laid out in ways that are foreign to me, gives me a bit of a headache. Very cool app, but I'm not quite comfortable with it yet. I haven't tried Riffer but, just watching a few videos, I think I get it. Simple and straightforward for what it does, generating random melodies. I like the piano roll better than sliders. Mainly, does it make more usable lines. What kind of AI is built into the randomization process? I can easily make quasi-random riffs myself, just not as quickly. If Riffer is more than just simply random, it's got a leg up. If I have time, I'm hoping to find out.
AU might get me off the fence but until then I’m sticking with the midi generators already mentioned.
I’m not totally sure as I don’t have Quantum- but there is a feature where you select the maximum number of notes for your sequence to be randomised- so you will only have say nine notes appear in a 16 step randomised sequence- which breaks it up nicely- then if you draw in longer notes others are removed. There is also a drawbar at the top for selecting particular areas by sliding it back and forth.
I am really enjoying this as well- I have been using it pretty much constantly since purchase. Total fun. No frustration- 😎
In my experience designing generative algorithms, purely random notes are useless 99% of the time, they just don't sound musical "by accident" often enough. Music is in the end all about structure and mathematics.
didn't look at Riffer in detail but if it generates musically sounding stuff most of the time, then it certainly isn't using pure random.
Agree with you. Interesting is that there's so much of this kind of stuff around as (free) VST plugins. Especially if you're still into 32-bits you can download masses of this kind of stuff. At first glance 99% sound impressive but you get bored with them very soon. Would rather see it as "throw away" fads. Fun for a few times but that's it. Although must say some peopel can do wonders with this kind of stuff, but that are people that invested a lot of time in finding the right sequence and in that case playing around with sample or in a DAW leads probably to faster results.
Example of Nova3 – freeware Generative Sequencer VST below.

Yes - Pure random is boring.
Randomness within parameters is where the fun is. (just like nature)
The more that these parameters can be manipulated/planned for/prodded/massaged , the more musical the outcomes from generating with a vision heading towards certain outcomes.
Agree! btw for people into this kinda thing Reaktor is the way to go. There are hunderds of this type of sequencers. Though most are boring with the second time you start them up. On the other hand good thing they're all free. Just download the free Reaktor player from NI and you are set to go. Example below is from Node-E sequencer.
Agree to a certain level. Played around with a lot of Reaktor ensembles (see me response to @greengrocer above) . Some of theme make Riffer seem lik a children's toy if we talk about parameters control. But in the end it all felt I was not doing real creative stuff. Maybe something personal but somehow it felt for me not real creative. If you lok how many people are into making this kind of software probably the most fun part is programming and developing these ensembles and VSTs because there must be thousands of them which is probably more than user
Maybe the special kind of thing is that there are hardly any kind of this type of apps for iOS compared to the MACOS and Windows platforms.
Is Node-E still working for you? I’ve got the latest full version of Reaktor but couldn’t get any sound from it.
Just downloaded for check. But I don't see the ens file in the zip... Weird

There’s a link in the pdf, to download it from their website.
I did that but not getting sound from the demo setup, and can’t seem to connect a separate synth via Reaktor.
Could be my lack of knowledge, I’ve not hooked up a Reaktor sequencer before, and not completely sure how I’d integrate this into Reason.
I’ll have a look at the other free vst you mentioned.
See what you mean. Downloaded it form TwistedTools. They make also really cool thing btw.
Use the Nod-E_Example.ens NOT the Nod-E.ens and from that start playing with presets etc. Cool!
You're totally right. The problem is that a lot of people on this forum seem to forget how much audio software there was and still is MacOS and Windows. In that sense iOS is lightyears behind. If you look at the total picture Riffer is just one of many in the genre of generative tools that has a tradition that goes back to time before the internet. That said, it's good to see also this type of apps developed for iOS.
Have you been able to swap the synth, or control a DAW synth? That’s the bit I’m stuck on...
UPDATE: ok sussed it. You have to go into the edit panel, drag your new instrument in there, create a couple of L/R connectors and replace the existing out's with these. Then go into the properties panels for the sequencer and the new instrument, and make sure the MIDI in/out connections are set. My soundcard stopped working, which didn't help.
Bit of a faff though.
Not exactly clear what you mean. Nod-E is a sequencer you have endless series of presets you can combine. Below in the middle you can choose your instruments.
That’s just the instrument they’ve bundled with the example. For it to be useful, it needs to be easily connectable to other MIDI internal and external instruments.
I’ve sussed out how to do it internally (see my previous post), but connecting it to an external synth/DAW is going to be tricky.
It’s a very good sequencer, but a bit of a faff to connect, even when you know how to do it.
I guess this is the beauty of iOS sequencers - quick and easy to connect, though missing the features of the Reaktor based stuff.
I believe they bundled 85 instruments with the bundle. But I understand what you mean, you want to use your own synths. Reaktor stuff varies some easily connect others more difficult. I'm not a programmer so know too little about the internals. Just curious how did you connect the midi signals to your instruments of choice. Which settings?
Have you got the full version? Go I nto the edit panel, drag your new instrument in there, create a couple of L/R connectors and replace the existing out's with these. I couldn’t find these in the modules section, so I copied the ones from the demo instrument and pasted these on the new one.
Then go into the properties panels for the sequencer and the new instrument, and make sure the MIDI in/out connections are set.
It’s pretty involved, which makes 7 quid for Riffer a good deal.
You know Reaktor is f.e a midi FX in Logic as well.
I find sadly connecting things on iOS really slow and complicated.
Is it? I'll have to check a few scenarios out tomorrow. I've only tried triggering synths in Reason with Reaktor so far, and MIDI's a bit of a bugger in Reason. I'll try Maschine and Logic tomorrow.
Just in case...
No Audiobus for Riffer either, which makes it even more in need of this AU update.
Nice one thanks, I’ll watch that later
If you use Ableton it's super simple to use every synth you want with Reaktor ens like Nod-E.

Looks like an AU update...
Yes au update, but i have some problems for changing parameters (scales, quantization) because the drop down menu doesn’t work). And we are always waiting for the polyphonic mode. But this little sequencer is awesome
Interesting app but I have the same problem with the drop down menus. A solution has to be found here but I’m happy that another AU<3 seq is now available...
I just bought Riffer, it’s a very interesting app to experiment. As already commented, there’s an issue with the drop down menus when loaded as AU. I sent an email through their support web page, hope this is fixed soon.
