@CracklePot ha, that's very cool - creating images for this specifically. @brice has some geometric images above that give interesting results, in the sense that it feels like you have two sequences on a single sequencer since the image has various parts that are widely different from each other.
I have also dabbled with the idea of being able to shorten the playing sequence, such that if you stumble across several notes that feel right, you can play only those on that sequencer, but that is further down the road.
In general, I use the small grid size to try to find nice repeating grooves that may work for lead/bass and the larger grid sizes for driving background pads/drones.
Btw, I'm not sure anyone noticed, but you can tap on sequencer 'pixels' to enable/disable them for playback. Before I introduced note augmentation, this was a way I made things sound a bit more dynamic when playing several sequences together.
@skiphunt thanks for all the feedback, midi out is certainly finicky sometimes and it's something I hope to improve. I am aiming for improved midi out (maybe even virtual out ports for each sequencer) and completion of Audiobus & IAA support for the next build.
Long due update here. Hope everyone is doing alright in these weird times.
I'm nearing completion with this project and, most importantly, I think I figured out the intricacies of AUv3!. Here's a sneak peek working in Audiobus as an audio unit sending midi to Moog Model D, based on an image from my gallery:
If you're interested in updates, I suggest signing up on the update form here: http://eepurl.com/dIHsxP
Is this available yet or still in beta?
Look like I am already subscribed.
@andreitonescu Looks really interesting - I've signed up for updates - is there a beta?
Thanks for the interest in this everybody. @Toastedghost @enkaytee I'm hoping to be able to open beta this month via Testflight, right now I'm stabilizing the AUv3 build. 🙌
Pop me on the beta list please, this kinda sequencer is right up my street, thanks.
Very cool - thanks for keeping up the work on it!
Looks awesome, I can’t wait to try it out
A video app working with AUv3 is game changing. I Love it.
Maybe we should team up and try to persuade Luma Fusion to implement AUv3 in future updates. I missed my AUs for sound processing in LF for sure.
Resurfacing this thread to announce that Pixel Music is finally live on the app store. This was a long journey as a solo dev but I’m happy that I’ve got a 1.0 out that I’m proud of: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pixel-music/id1383899232
For people who are seeing this thread for the first time, Pixel Music is a music sequencer based on images.
Overview of the app
• Pixels turn into pitch, velocity, and note durations
• Play multiple images at the same time, in sync
• Choose what parts of the image will be played and at what timing
• Tap on the image and record yourself playing alongside the sequencer
Features
◦ AUv3 with preset and MIDI support
◦ Ableton Link compatible
◦ Control sequencer timing and configuration
◦ Internal Synth with delay and reverb effects
◦ Send MIDI to external synths when used as AUv3
◦ Save and Load app states and configurations
◦ Dark mode support
Since the support on this forum was very encouraging to me when starting this journey, I’m offering 15 promo codes. To avoid people trying out already used codes, please DM me to request a code, I’ll give them out in a first come first served manner.
I’ve put together a Help Center to guide you through the app: https://pixelmusic.notion.site/Pixel-Music-Help-Center-18da423697254080b925dfa4c9d6d3ba. Just message me if you have any questions. I’ve also set up a discord server for discussions: https://discord.gg/RwbZfTPu
For social media, I’ve set up https://www.instagram.com/pixelmusic.app/ - but nothing posted there yet .
I just went ahead and bought it.
Liking it a lot so far.
Still need to try it as AUv3, but standalone is great fun.
Thanks for taking the time to create the help center. Looks helpful.
@andreitonescu I'm always on the lookout for an app that plays something random for practicing guitar. I thought this might be good for that but then I saw a video of you using it for exactly that. Instant buy after that. Very cool and useful plugin for just that purpose.
ace update!:)
thanks Andrei!
Always wondered if it's possible to figure out a suitable way of translating video image motion into musical patterns. Like water rippling etc. Then I realized it could be possible using gradients. Sorry if this has been mentioned before, but we used them all the time to do really tricky image operations for compositing but I imagine it could be musically useful too. Might be worth the effort to look into this if you haven't already. Looking forward to what you come up with:

For folks interested in this kind of thing, I highly recommend this (not iOS though)

I'm always on the lookout for new and interesting ways to generate MIDI so this was an instabuy...
Anyone generally interested in the audio/graphics connection should check out MetaSynth, Mac OSX only.
Was experimenting around with it over 20 years ago and didn't even know it still/again existed.

This was such fun back then, we had it on our studio g3, ran it for that and final cut only 😅
I just bought Pixel Music - it´s fantastic! The GUI is super intuitive to me and it offers lots of versatility. Wow, what a great sequencer. @andreitonescu congratulations & also: thanks a lot for such a cool app.
I am only missing one thing, and it would be fantastic if it would be possible to implement that:
the option to do circular image traversal, to read images in a circular fashion. The sequencer lends itself to repetitive music and such music is so well represented with circles:
https://apps.musedlab.org/groovepizza/?museid=9KvpsRf9G&
Also, so many visible structures in nature are circles and might be represented in sound much more intuitive.
https://www.google.com/search?q=circles+in+nature&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwjqx4G659n9AhVVNewKHeu4C5sQ2-cCegQIABAA&oq=circles+in+nature&gs_lcp=CgNpbWcQAzIHCAAQgAQQEzIHCAAQgAQQEzIHCAAQgAQQEzIHCAAQgAQQEzIHCAAQgAQQEzIICAAQBxAeEBMyCAgAEAUQHhATMggIABAFEB4QEzIICAAQBRAeEBMyCAgAEAUQHhATOgQIIxAnOgYIABAHEB5QqghY9RJgmxRoAHAAeACAAYkBiAHLBJIBAzYuMZgBAKABAaoBC2d3cy13aXotaW1nwAEB&sclient=img&ei=A5APZKq6OtXqsAfr8a7YCQ&bih=762&biw=1440&client=firefox-b-d
I would love to sequence a flower, a tree, but doing so when reading the image from left to right does not do the visual impression justice.
I also think this is surprisingly good - interesting and unusual patterns thanks to the controls to choose hue, luminosity, etc. Surprised because there are already so many ways to generate music patterns I thought the field must be used up. Also it gave me a reason to use the app Pixen which lets me paint big chunky color patterns.
But I have suggestions right off the bat:
One thing it really calls out for is a way to channel the different sequencers to various synths; various output channels. It gets a little crowded to have all of the sequencers on one voice.
Also, I'm not understanding the crop tool. Is it supposed to constrict the sequence to the cropped area? If so, it's not working for me. Notes keep going on outside of it.
Yea surprised to see AU with MIDI out on this one. Looks cool
It’s out at $5.99
Crop is working for me, but I haven't worked out how to delete or undo a crop when I'm done.
+1 for more synths and output options.
I just n> @Krupa said:
And there is Virtual ANS. A different approach (reverse FFT). And as almost all software from Night radio, the maker of SunVox, it runs on almost all major operating systems including iOS and Android. While the desktop versions are free, you pay a very modest price for the mobile versions.

Bought. Be interesting to see how it plays alongside Virtual ANS…
It would be great if Pixel Music would allow for higher grid / pixel resolutions and if the dev would add a mode that scans in a similar way to Virtual ANS: One axis pitch, the other time, and all translated into polyphonic Midi output.
Agreed,
I'm getting occasional matching notes when pixel colours are close but clearly not the same.
This is surprisingly fun and produces interesting results with very little effort. Nice work.
