  • I could see sound for standalone to create and save patterns, but in the Au you can route the midi to so many great sounding synths, the sound won’t be used as much.

Hi everyone - there are a lot of things progressing with the app right now but I switched for a bit on getting Pixel Music to work in the new Logic Pro on the iPad.

Besides some obvious fixes, it seems that Logic is very specific to the type of AUv3. Currently, Pixel Music is of the type 'music generator'.

I've chosen this because it was better supported when I started working on it and it has worked well in iOS hosts until now (like AUM, or ApeMatrix) - because they allow the selection of this type of Audio Unit both as an audio generator and as a MIDI sender. So if someone wants to use it as an audio generator, they can - same as someone who only wants to use it for MIDI.

Logic Pro on the iPad has changed this since it's not seeing it under the MIDI FX selection, essentially limiting Pixel Music as a sound generator.

I'm curious about everyone's usage of the app as an audio unit until now: have you used it as a sound generator, or for MIDI output? In principle, I'm interested to know if switching it to a 'midi instrument' will affect anyone (this means that you will not be able to use it for generating sound as an audio unit).

Alternatively, if someone with more experience in Logic Pro knows a way to output MIDI from an Instrument, do let me know.

Any chance on reopening the beta, I missed it in March, somehow… lol. Would love to test it out to help you and try before I buy so to speak. Thanks.

  • @Poppadocrock tis totally worth it. Not too many apps allow velocity duration and such flexibility in a "random" generator. Plenty of scales as well if you dont feel like routing into Brams scale app or Mozaic

    Yep it’s a great app.

  • Thanks for all the great feedback! To be clear, the discussion around Audio + Midi or Midi only is only about the AUv3 version, not the standalone app.

For now, I think I am going to keep it as is (both Audio and Midi in AUv3) until I gather more insights about usage with Logic and in order to not block the work I’m doing on the new functionality. There's also the possibility that with a future update, Logic will also support sending MIDI from Audio Generator AUv3s (I've seen some feedback around this here in the forum).

@Poppadocrock there will be a new beta soonish, I'll share it here.

One (I hope) simple request is for in the AUv3 version, that the audio engine is not on by default.
Every time I am setting up a new sequence I have to deselect the onboard synth so that I can hear whatever connected synth I'm trying to use. Not a big deal but slightly tedious.

Midi output would definitely be the main thing

That would be awesome. I’d love to give it a spin. I’m not sure how I missed the one from 3-4 months ago. I’ve heard great things. It was recently featured in Computer Music Mag on the App Watch page. I actually tweeted about it. Excited to try it out. I’ll keep my eyes open for that beta. Thanks, Cheers.

Awesome! Thanks for the updates. It’s become one of my favorite midi apps, so I’m glad to hear you’re still hard at work on it.

  • Hi everyone - hope you are well.

An update is long due here, and I’m happy to say that I am sharing one today. There’s a new beta of Pixel Music available here: https://testflight.apple.com/join/0f04sLle, mostly focused on the ability to customize step lengths for sequencers in what I called “Verses”.

I’ve also added a higher res mode @skiphunt, fixed some bugs, and am now storing the audio engine setting separately per standalone and audio unit, so you can keep it off when used as an audio unit @Stochastically.

This is all very fresh, so I haven't had time to update the manual and so on, just wanted to get this out there. Let me know what you think! As always, thanks for your support and feedback!

    Full list of features:

    • Verses: customize step lengths of sequencers in multiple sequential patterns
    • 32x48 higher res mode for images
    • Multiple dotted note options added for timing selection
    • Internal Synth Activated and Allow Background Activity options are now persisted and differentiated between standalone and audio unit mode. This allows you to keep the internal synth deactivated all the time when running as an audio unit
    • Bug fixes
  • This is very cool, thank you. I made this track using high res mode.

Stuck notes occurred several times using the test version in AUM. I saved and reopened AUM, and the stuck note problem would disappear then reappear

Great news! I'm looking forward to it.

Interesting use of it! I was having fun before making the images symmetrical, etc. and I'm looking forward to the higher res.

Will it work in IOS GarageBand now ? *fingers crossed *

  • edited February 2024

Crashes on crop. Also, the volume isn't very linear i.e from 20-100 nothing much change (having global volume on 100)

Edit: Very cool app by the way, will definitely buy it.

  • @andreitonescu Cool 😎 can’t wait to play with this again!

I’m traveling at the moment. Is the new higher res in the beta only now? Or a public version update already submitted?

I've had multiple people report on this, but I can't get it to crash on my end. Can you share some details about the configuration you were using in terms of grid side, if you had multiple sequencers, verses, etc. - any info will potentially help to isolate this. Thanks!

Still Not compatible in GarageBand on my phone13 pro max .

I’m going to push a build tomorrow to tackle the size issue on iPhones after some tweaks on the UI:

However, there are some other issues with Garage Band. The way it handles timing is different than other AU hosts that I experimented with - in short, it resets the timing after a section is completed and this stops the sequencers because Pixel Music expects the timing to continue to increment. I haven’t seen any other AU host do this.

I’ll put the build out as is since you can still use it if you have longer sections and look for your feedback.

I’ve also managed to catch the crop issue 🤞. Cheers

No shade towards you, GB is great and I love it myself. But I’ve noticed a lot of the issues you have with these apps often stems from some issue in GB vs the app itself. Maybe worth considering Cubasis? It works very well on iPhone and surprisingly isn’t cluttered (imo). And regarding AUs it’s a lot more stable (plus you’d be able to use midi effects which is one of the best things about Pixel).

  • There should be a new build out now that hopefully fixes the Crop issue and the UI for Garage Band.

  • I wonder if there is an app or something, that "scans" in image from left to right. Lets say an EEG or a waveform. So that from the information in these images will be some MIDI Data generated.

Not available yet and I was doing a log for you, it was 32x48 I think. Anyway here’s a link to the log file (if you don’t need it, all the merrier 😃)

EDIT: Got it now and it works, great! 😊

I’m going to get Cubasis next time it goes on sale and I have the cash

Oh awesome! I’m excited for ya. I think you’ll really like it. Don’t underestimate those HALion sounds and Waves effects either. It really puts Cubasis on another level.
