I meant it never supported external storage natively. That relied on third-party apps
Colin, yes, they are used in series:
The headphone dongle has the audio output jack (for my wired headphones/feed to my speakers), and it has a USB-C pass-thru jack into which I then plug the hub. Actually, using the headphone dongle alone, I can monitor via wired phones and if I plug my MIDI keyboard into it via a USB-C to USB 2.0 Standard-B plug (which interfaces with the Minilab).
If I use the hub fed from the audio dongle, I can then use a more standard USB 2.0 cable into the hub from the Minilab, and at the same time, plug my charger into the USB-C input port on the hub which then feeds power back thru the two devices to power/charge the iPad.

Yes, thanks for that, Simon. I will have to read that a few times but I think it it makes it clear that all is not lost as far as my music workflow is concerned if I get a new iPad Pro.
