Ah thanks! Your way of saying I’m usually full of shit?😂 No offense taken.lol.

No way . Quite the opposite

TLDR; Buh Bye GarageBand. StageLight closing in but Xequence + AB3 still in the lead. Gadget and Cubasis still loved but much less used. Auria and BM3 relegated mostly to special duties.

It’s definitely replacing GarageBand for me. I’ve tried over and over again to get over my unreasoning dislike of GB. The clip launcher in GB is superb, and I like the great job they did on the drum sequencer. Both reasonably enough re-created in Stagelight - and can add my own samples for drums. So that just leaves the drummers in GB, which I won’t miss at all once I can use IAA or AudioBus for the Luis Martinez apps. The rest of GB is pure unwanted fluff to me.

But my other emerging and highly satisfying workflow is Xequence + AB3 + AUM (or other DAW for capturing audio). This just works so well, and is so fun, that the jury is still out on which will get more use. Probably Xequence. We’ll see.

BM3 = mother of all samplers, so won’t go away, and may make a comeback if they get some of the other bungled up stuff sorted.

Cubasis - I dunno. It’s just so nice. Hard to think of not snuggling up to it sometimes.

Auria - I’m kinda miffed at how slow it has been to adapt to AUv3 midi. Relegated to mixing and mastering audio stems at this point.

Gadget - more of a massive IAA instrument to me now since Xequence came along. I just don’t get on with the song structure and get pissed off about no AB3/IAA recording into Zurich. And the dopey no folder / no sharing sample structure. Still good for an jam when I don’t want to hassle with setting up other stuff. Still super glad to have it.

FLSM - wrote it off a long time ago. Icheck back periodically only to find they still don’t have their shit together (sigh).

Agree with many points here. I want to love and just commit primarily GB because GB/Logic is so convenient. It’s logically the best and most economical option. But...I just dont click creatively while using them.

BM3 is my super dope MPC workmachine from the future. It ain’t ever going anywhere. It has kinks but it’s still badass which is why I must have IAA in sL so I can host it.

Cubasis is ok but I only use it because it can host Bm3 which handles all of the sampling and beat making, Cubasis just for audio and mpe tracks played with my roli blocks...which is why SL has all but replaced it.

I honestly thought Stagelight was ugly as hell initially. Now, it’s gorgeous to me. The UI isn’t perfect but it might be more perfect for me than the other DAW on iOS. I just have fun and can really get to dope tracks quickly using loop builder.

  • I watched a few Stagelight videos, and decided it’s not something I want to use. New, shiny and feature-packed is great for most people, but I’m more interested in the actual songs I get done. For me that involves familiarity and comfort level with features and sounds that I know very well. I’m a linear-multitrack-audio kind of guy. Auria, Cubasis, and n-Track have become my tried-and-true-I-know-what-they-do DAWs. Congratulations to the Stagelight folks, but I’m sticking with my go-to’s. (Still use a wooden pencil, not those fancy mechanical ones!)

  • I was pleasantly surprised that you can go fully linear in this (press record while in timeline view and with loop symbol off - roll as long as you please).

I’m not sure if I’ll be switching but based on my current experience with the app, SL is doing a lot of things right. For a 1.0 on iOS it’s a very solid app. It’s been fun creating Loops and recording them direct to the Timeline view.

I had 6 instances of SynthMasterONE running in it last night and that was a lot of fun and resulting in something i was pleased with.

I had a really good look at this. I was contemplating switching to it and was on the verge of purchasing the IOS unlock. However a couple of 'deal-breakers' put me off.

    (1) I tried using Geoshred as a MIDI input device but as far as I can tell Stagelight does not support background audio so I didn't get any sound even though I'd selected Geoshred as the MIDI input.

    (2) I resorted to using the built-in keyboard and recorded something. I wanted to quantise it but as far as I can tell there's only the option to switch Snap To Grid on and off. You can't set the quantise resolution like you can in Cubase/Audio.

I'll be keeping an eye on it to see how it develops though though as the cross-platform compatibility really appeals.

    Background audio will come.

    About quantization options:

    While recording >>

Tap on grid icon on top toolbar and choose a recording quantize resolution

After recording, in the midi editor >>

Select all notes with arrow tool or even multi arrow tool for choosing only some notes

Set grid resolution with a tap the four squares icon

Then open the editor tools with a tap on lower left blue arrow and tap on quantize button. You can also tap select all here to select all notes

Very helpful - thanks. I've unlocked the Full All Platforms deal. I'm trusting that background audio will come soon and/or AU Midi so I can use the excellent new KB-1 Keyboard with it.

I’m bullish on StageLight as well. Still keeping GB due to its Logic Pro escape plan. If SL had pitch correction it would be a slam dunk.

    Pitch correction aka auto tune?

Yup the only sonically passable one on iOS is the one in GB

Have you tried voice rack fx by tc helicon?

    Yep. It’s not passable

Yeah it’s the most comfortable timeline for me on iOS so far.

Horses for courses. I find garage band not passable in every way. My 8 year loves it though so I love it too.

  • Will wait 6 months to see if people are still impressed about stagelight for iOS before trying.

Not a bad strategy. Plus if what you are already using does the trick there’s no need to try another Daw.

I happened to try it full of skepticism, and was surprised at how it closely it aligned with my idea of a Daw.

I still don’t recommend -any- iOS Daw for any serious aspiring artist who’s not already on the platform. A MacBook Air with Logic is still the best way to start IMO.

  • Why wait 6 months to try a free app?

Well, through my limited experience with iOS apps It seems better to wait until all the spoilers are revealed especially when it’s a DAW.

  • You’ve seen this, right?

Yes definitely! Though Henny is a seasoned producer. I’m referring to young aspiring artists who’s music also requires strong vocal processing, buses mixing etc. iOS doesn’t have the best story for that. I’m pretty sure the vocalists using Henny tracks are likely tracking / mixing in either PT or Logic.
