I would say that the first impression of the interface is that it's cryptic and "mathy". But, after you spend just a little time digging in... even refer to the in-app guide just a little... you'll find that it kind of falls into place and starts making sense quickly. And, you'll realize that it's not as daunting as it appears at first glance.

Exactly. I hated it for so long. And then, one day, I don't know why, it clicked. (Well, I have a suspicion that @Daveypoo's very thorough tutorials had a lot to do with it.)
It's cool and the exposed modulations are remarkable. That said, so far it's not fun for me. Certain apps are just fun: Modstep*, Gadget, Xynthesizr, AUM. I always get something up and running in them. But I have high hopes for Ape Matrix. It's still a little theoretical for me.

*I mean, it took about a month of dogged pursuit to understand Modstep, and much self-abasement on the forums begging for advice. But now it's fun! I swear.

For those that just picked up apeMatrix (I'm looking at you @MonzoPro & @skiphunt ) I've got a ton of videos featuring apeMatrix that might give you some ideas:

YES - I am shamelessly promoting my channel.

  • @Daveypoo What? I’ve been using apeMatrix and promoting it’s use since the beginning. Have been on the beta since before launch. I’ve got a good handle on it, but thanks for the invite. ;)

  • CUBASIS!!! God, I'd like to buy it buy again just to have all that fun twice! Inapps 50% off as well.

@LFS I think you just wrote me about this ( saw the pop up) but no PM! I think I must be channeling you. Where are those orchestral NI in apps you never promised?

Thanks Dave, watching your vid before buying helped me to jump off the fence at last, and meant I hit the ground running...well, walking quickly anyway.

I’m a bit confused with the preset/session/recordings saving, and just managed to overwrite one by accident, so I need to watch a few more tutorials I think. Other than that it’s pretty straightforward, and I’m loving the modulations - the Dictator slider inTurnado in particular, is getting a right old yanking.

Except after cracking ApeMatrix it makes perfect sense.

I understand how Modstep works, but it's still fucking weird.

    Hahah, perfect.
Modstep is super-powerful and totally unpredictable, and full of creative sparks. But sometimes it just makes no sense at all.
I just realized that this is probably how Kanye West's personal assistant describes his job.

Blimey yeah apeMatrix is a bargain at £6. I think it's underpriced at 12 now with all the new features.

Does seem a bit of a bargain. I was on the fence for a while then drifted away, but it's always been on the list, and I was hoping for a sale.

    Better grab it now then.

Some very good sales this year - I'd recommend Mood if you haven't got it.

This is great and I can see it working well with your style of working, if I understand it correctly. I think you'll love it. Enjoy the mountain!

It has taken me a long time to really get/integrate/use AUM (and now I have I wonder of course what the hell took me so long). If you could say in a sentence what you find the apematrix special sauce to be (for you) I would find that helpful. I have bought it, just haven't done much more than open it and stare in confusion before closing it again :)

One sentence ... It is my Rozeta sandbox. *

*note - i've merely scratched the surface and I'm sure power users could give you better and more intelligible responses. I love the way it's laid out, you can see how all the connections work. It's brilliant in that regard. ApeMatrix is stable and it lends itself to experimentation. For me, anyway.

Granted, I think it takes a little mental switch to acclimate to the grid routing when you've had so much more experience dealing with the linear interface so many have become used to. But, once you get over that little speed bump, it's really pretty easy and clear to work with.

Controlling the automation of the LFOs looks complex too... but after a few minutes with a simple set up, ie. just one synth and maybe one instance of a sequencer... then playing with the sliders, you'll figure out what they're doing.

I also agree with @Carnbot that apeMatrix is under-priced at it's regular $12, especially after all the goodies added with the most recent update. Spectacular bargain at $6

I'm a big fan of all the Numerical apps that are 50% off too. RE-1 is one of my personal favs of the year.

Very much appreciate your calm insight. I just watched Mister Poo's short overview which is EXACTLY what I needed. I think that often we naughtier slow boys at the back just need to understand oh, I get it, not so much crazy science madness and then are prepared to buckle down a little further....

  • @JohnnyGoodyear Sometimes you just need a good Poo to get you going, and that's what I'm here for!

  • @Zaubrer said:
What is the consensus on Xynthesizr purely as a synth? Currently I am not very interested in it’s external sequencer abilities, but the generative part sounds intriguing.

I love it. Great app for creating things quickly. As a synth it is quite basic 2 Osc/LFO affair with some basic settings, but it really shines in how it can spit out funny little nuggest of music to keep building on.

  • Cubasis iaps are 50% off? I thought those were the regular prices I am seeing. What is waves cost that is showing up for you?

I admire a man who very clearly understands his own qualities :)

  • I never have purchased Mood or iVCS3 —. Damnit!

The bundle shows $10. Normally it is $20.
Individually, not sure, but $7.99 seems like the normal price.

Just bought the bundle for $10. Finally caved. :D

Agreed. I'm winding my way through this as well. Things are clicking s-l-o-w-l-y.

Yeah right, shame on you! I just subscribed to your YT channel. I feel trapped! 😁

Seriously, that might be my final attempt with apeMatrix. So far I‘ve just opened the app, stared at it in awe and always closed it before it could realize that I was there... 😬

  • Are both Mood and iVCS3 auv3?

  • @Breezee said:
Are both Mood and iVCS3 auv3?

Yes, although iVCS has an odd implementation. It's split into individual AUv3 modules: OSC, filter, amp. env, noise, spring reverb.
I was initially a bit doubtful, but having the individual components available in ApeMatrix makes a lot of sense.

I was gonna ask the same. Looks like ivcs3 is from their changelog but not sure.

    Also why isn’t quanta universal?

I think it’s beautiful sounding and the controls are great esp with the sequencer. The generative works with external synths as well and specific ranges can be mapped to different synths.

Again to your question the synth engine sounds great.

Does it make sense in a daw? Looks awesome but I just won’t use it if it doesn’t make sense.

Alessandro ( the dev) is on the verge of releasing iVCS3 as a full AU (it's in beta now). So the wait won't be very long...

Should I get mood as well?

Absolutely - especially since you get a bank of patches designed by little old ME!

...as played by Doug Woods himself!

Seriously, though - mood is a MONSTER of an app. It's one of my favorite Minimoog clones, and it sounds huge. Check out the videos for the sound, but it's super worth it.

Not on commission - just a fan of apeSoft and what Alessandro does (Amazing Noises too). But I am considering starting a Patreon page...

Got them both and they both sound incredible! I’m a sucker for a realistic interface though like ivcs3.
